Thesis Advisor is MIA. Advice Needed.
whiteunicorn replied to whiteunicorn's topic in Coursework, Advising, and Exams
Hi, I am indeed kind of over thinking. I need some "big picture" feedback from her now before I can revise the details, otherwise the work might go into waste. I guess I will keep waiting, and hope she can show up soon. I'm not sure at this point whether she will give me valuable comments or not... -
Thesis Advisor is MIA. Advice Needed.
whiteunicorn posted a topic in Coursework, Advising, and Exams
Hi all, I'm working on my masters thesis right now, but my advisor has stopped responding to me since last monday. Before that our communication was normal and she initiated a discussion about my draft over skype (I'm not on campus now). However, she not only did not show up for the scheduled skype call, but also completely disappeared after that although I've written her three emails and called her office a few times. The weirded thing is that I know she has been meeting other students in her office during this time, which means nothing unusual has happened to her. She is somewhat disorganized usually, but this seems to be unacceptable to me. Am I too worried? Any suggestion on what I should do? I really need to finish this thesis but I also don't want to ruin my relationship with her. Thanks in advance. -
Hi, I'm glad that you shared this info. Did you contact the school or your specific department? I applied to Steinhardt's PhD in Media and the wait has been driving me a little crazy. This week is their spring break so maybe they're taking the time to make decisions. Good luck!

Has anyone got accepted or interviewed by them? There has been no news since some rejections were posted on March 2, which seems really unusual compared to the past results. Does anyone know what is going on?

Hi ashiepoo72, Thanks for the response. Yes, the first ones are due on Dec. 1st. I'm feeling a little uncomfortable about the older paper because part of my methodology seems problematic if I incorporate my new findings, which will also weaken my older argument. But I guess that's very common for any research process. Maybe I can explain a little in my SOP, which also shows my scholar potential? Good luck to you too!

Hi lovely gradcafe community, I'm currently in the second year of my Masters program and have not finished my thesis yet, which will be an expansion from a paper I wrote about a year ago. My thesis topic is very relevant to the PhD project I want to pursue. The problem is that I have been doing a lot of research about the topic in the past year and the older paper seems very outdated now, but I don't have time to make major changes at this point because that is what I'm doing for my thesis. Should I revise and submit the older one anyways because the topic is the most relevant? I also have two other papers in the same discipline that are more complete, but their topics are not as relevant to the PhD project. What is your suggestion? Thanks!

Hi everyone, I'm probably not applying to Asian Studies anytime soon, but just curious about what happened to NYU's East Asian program. The website says "East Asian Studies is not admitting new graduate students for the coming year. It is currently undergoing a reconsideration of its academic program". Does anyone know? Are they still offering graduate courses this year?

Hi everyone, I've recently been admitted to the MA in Liberal Studies at CUNY and the Draper interdisciplinary program at NYU. Though already leaning towards CUNY for many reasons, I still want to hear your opinions. I just graduated from a well-recognized liberal arts college. My final goal is a PhD in social science, but I did not have much research experience before. That's why I think MA will help me. I've met the professors at CUNY graduate center. They were very friendly and wanted to introduce me to people at different research centers. I'm also very interested in what they do. NYU, on the other hand, has not been responding to my emails about specific classes or professors, so I'm still not very sure about what will happen if I go there. Given my goals and how short a masters is, I should be able to start working on things asap. But considering NYU has always been my dream school, it is hard to make this decision. Please let me know what you think. Any suggestion will be appreciated!

The Waiting Game - Fall 2013 - Share your progress!
whiteunicorn replied to radiomars's topic in Anthropology Forum
Hi everyone! I've submitted all my cultural anthropology applications by the end of last year to Duke, U Chicago, UCLA, NYU, Cornell, Harvard and Columbia. While waiting for the results, I'm thinking about applying to a few terminal MA programs as back up since I went to a liberal arts undergrad without much anthro background, and I'm really not sure about getting into the PhDs that I applied to. Any opinions on this idea and suggestions for MA programs? Thanks!
