  1. That same malcontent would've been happily assumed the role of one of those "dipshits" had he/she been admitted...
  2. Finally, I found someone else who applied here! Ha, I was starting to think I was the only applicant (which led me to believe I might get in ). I haven't heard anything yet, but I did email Vickie Stubbs (DGS) about a week and a half ago and she informed me that they were currently reviewing apps and they'd be notifying by the end of March. What's your background/area of interest, lindse? Have you applied anywhere else?
  3. I don't know much about either school, but I'm reticent to make any decisions based on rankings alone. Maybe I'm the only one who prefers to give the middle finger to prestige (while still acknowledging it's relevancy when it comes to Harvard, Stanford, etc.), but I feel like it's the work that you do at said program that is the most important. What I'm saying is: which program will allow you to do the most kick-ass work?
  4. Just got a TAship off the funding waitlist as ASU!

Congrats! ASU supposed to have very attractive students, if you catch my drift.

  5. I did an unfunded MA, but that was at an in-state school where I also did my BA. I didn't want to teach (stupidly) because I had a job that paid better than a TAship, took less time, and ultimately that allowed me to finish in two years rather than three like a lot in my cohort. I sacrificed teaching experience for shorter time to degree and made more money doing so by paying in-state tuition and not taking the crappy TA stipend. So I guess you could look at "unfunded" as a chance to get finished with your MA more quickly, thus paying less tuition. However, if they offer tuition remission beyond two years, it's worth the teaching experience if you intend to go for the PhD. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure my lack of teaching experience is hurting my chances this app season... (ironically, the job market favors publications over teaching experience when it comes to tenure-track jobs). Just my two cents.
  6. Hey, what do you think is going on with CU Boulder, btw? I've heard nothing but have seen rejections and acceptances alike up on the results board. I heard somewhere they have an unofficial waiting list that they don't often tell people about, meaning folks are randomly accepted in late March/early April. Maybe that's just me being optimistic. No_foam, we have a pretty similar list of schools, don't we?
  7. Maybe we could put Tufts in contact with Oregon? You never know...
  8. So, I've been admitted to ASU's PhD in Literature program, but haven't heard a word on funding yet. This isn't unexpected, as their website clearly states that they don't make funding decisions until March. However, does anyone know if they admit PhDs without funding? Has anyone on here been offered TAships or fellowships from ASU? I find Sheila Luna, the grad program coordinator, to be a woman of few words, so I thought I'd put this feeler out. Would appreciate any information!
  9. Well, I was told by email that I was a finalist but was ultimately not offered admission. I'm wondering if my lack of teaching experience seriously hurt my chances and made it harder to get into those 2-3 funded, non-teaching GTF slots. I'm super disappointed, but congrats to dorotheabrooke and all the others who made it! ... I'm trying to focus on the positives: in at ASU and high on the waitlist at Tufts. Tempe and Medord aren't Eugene, but those are both great programs. Best of luck to everyone going to Oregon!
  10. I got the same thing... Guess all we can hope for now is waitlist. Does Stamm really need to be so elusive?
  11. Same here. I'd be surprised if we didn't at least make a waitlist since we survived the mass postal service rejections from a few weeks ago.
  12. Congrats! I haven't heard anything yet. I heard somewhere they hadn't finished sending out acceptances, but I'm not sure how accurate that is. I'm wondering if I'm gonna be waitlisted. It would be strange if they sent out two rounds of rejections, but maybe they did... Fingers crossed here.
  13. dorotheabrooke, have you heard anything from Oregon yet?
  14. I suppose I say the same about Eugene based more on extracirricular interests than anything. I haven't been there more than twice, but it appeals to me for the recreational opportunities, i.e. fantastic fly fishing, skiing, hiking access, and the fact that it is a big running town. These are all requisite distractions for graduate study (helped me clear my head during my MA). I know a lot less about the town itself, but more about its proximity to outdoor areas. I am currently looking at Tufts (high on waitlist) and love Boston, even without the access to wilderness areas.
  15. Congrats! I'm still waiting to hear from them. I didn't get one of those mass rejection letters via USPS, so I'm starting to wonder if I'm gonna be wait listed. I'm the same as you - no formal comp training. Oregon is my top choice though, tied with Tufts. I saw your other post - good luck choosing between Oregon and Brandeis. Both great programs in great places!
  16. You were accepted at OU? Congrats! What do you know?! I have been waiting in Oregon with baited breath... Tied for my top choice. Would love details
  17. In at 3rd choice, waitlisted at one top choice, and waiting to hear from other top choice... Not a bad position to be in :)

  18. I really thought we would hear this week! I'm trying not to let their radio silence loom over my weekend...
  19. Agreed. I wonder what's going on over in Eugene. This is tied for my top choice so I'm hoping hard.
  20. Gasp. What if all of the admits have been notified, and none of them are on Grad Cafe, meaning we have no way of knowing anything at all?!?! Unlikely, but still...
  21. Congrats! Maine is a great state... people are friendly, the craft beer scene is almost unrivaled, and it's a beautiful place. Hope the funding comes through for you!
  22. I got the same thing, though they weren't unkind enough to me to give six reasons. Yikes! That seems excessive... I think they must have canned reasons for rejection and whoever fills out the paperwork has to just select what's available. With an English background, I could see that fit might be tough... but the scholarship part stung a bit, too. Ah well. Hope you all have luck with your other apps!
