Congratulations! On to the next step!

Thanks for being so positive! You are absolutely right

Yikes! I think you just gave me something else to obsess about *Pulls up new window on my computer to see if I can figure out how many people typically apply to my particular subfield*

I just went to a new level of losing my mind! Not only do graduate programs receive a ton of applications making the process very competitive (we all know this), but depending on how many people apply to work with the same POI, the process could be even more competitive (I am sure some of you knew this as well). I just spoke with a former colleague of mine who works in the Psychology department at the University where I work and of the applications the department received, 65 applications were from people that want to work with her. She said they are ALL amazing and she is having a very hard time making a decision. So, no longer am I just worried about the 600+ applications that are received by my top program and the 6% of applicants that get accepted, I am now driving myself crazy thinking about how many people may have possibly applied to work with "my" POI. Aside from the losing my mind aspect, this conversation reminds me that sometimes graduate school admission boils down to "luck" "good fortune" "blessing" or whatever you prefer to call it. As this professor has 65 qualified applicants and she can only pick one person.

Looks like I didn't see Loseric's post before posting mine.

I didn't apply to Penn, but I know they have an admissions blog that gets updated pretty frequently and one or more posts focuses on this specific issue. http://penngseadmissions.blogspot.com/

I just saw an email pop up on my phone from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and I nearly had a heart attack (even though I know decisions aren't expected to come out until Feb/March). I opened up the message and it was just a reminder to submit my financial aid application. Thanks HGSE for nearly sending me to the hospital lol.

Congratulations nohika! Such awesome news!

It does appear to be taking them a while to make the updates. I submitted my application for a PhD program on 12/4/12 and my status still says incomplete. However, I've been in email correspondence with someone from Admissions and was informed that my application was complete and sent for review.

My heart just dropped! I just checked the results forum and someone was notified yesterday of an interview (or had an interview-I am thinking it is the former though as I know the school holds an interview weekend in February) for the same program I am applying to. Fingers crossed that I get a phone call too!
-
Good luck to you as well! What program are you applying to? I am applying to SHIPS.

As a result of this thread, I just upgraded my LinkedIn account so I can see who has been viewing my profile (terrible, I know).

Wow, so sorry to hear that. Sending positive and happy thoughts your way!

Any fellow SUSE applicants out there (past or present)? If you have applied before, what was the process like for you? If you are awaiting a decision, what has the process been like for you so far? From what I can see, there appears to be less information available on this site about the admissions process (as compared to other places such as HGSE). It looks like the school will be returning from winter break tomorrow and my curiosity is soaring!

Two of the programs I applied to will be back from winter break on Monday, so I am sure my constant email and application status checks will increase tremendously (as if the daily count isn't already high). I'd love to get an email from a POI requesting an informal interview of some sort (as I understand it, most of the programs I applied to don't have formal interviews). It would at least let me know that someone is interested in my application and would probably reduce some of my anxiety.

2nd (or more) Time Applicants - What's Your Feeling This Year?

Did you apply to any of the same programs? -
That is awesome news! Good luck!

My statement was about 1300 words. My statement was about 1300 words.

I've read about other people on here getting accepted to programs without having all of the required letters of recommendation turned in. So I say that to say, it is possible. I don't think they made a mistake. I think it means you are a stellar applicant! Congratulations!

2nd (or more) Time Applicants - What's Your Feeling This Year?

This is my second time applying to PhD programs. I applied directly out of undergrad the first time and I applied because I thought it was what I "supposed to do". Five years later, I feel more confident about my chances of being accepted somewhere this time around for a number of reasons: 1. I have a more refined research interest (so much that am applying to a completely different discipline than what I originally applied to). 2. I have over four years of related research experience (when I applied before the only research experience I had was through two summer internships- a total of 2 months each) 3. I have three very strong letters of recommendation, all from people who can speak to my research abilities(last time I had one strong letter and two mediocre letters). 4. I improved my GRE verbal and AW score (still couldn't get my quant score up- so that concerns me a little) 5. I have a masters degree in a related field with a 3.9 gpa (when I applied the first time, all I had was my low undergrad gpa which wasn't anything to brag about). 6. I am more confident in my statement of purpose this time around. I really spent a lot of time writing it and got tons of feedback from the right people. 7. I have publications and have presented my research at a number of different professional conferences. I feel pretty good about my chances this year. I don't think I will get accepted to every school I applied to, but I think someone will see my potential as a successful graduate student. -
I love your thinking! I was always taught to speak the things you want into existence. So I will say it with you, this time next year we will be enjoying a much needed break after successfully completing our first semester of graduate school. Happy New Year!

I am nervous about this as well. I don't plan to sell though (primarily because I'd be losing quite a bit of money at this point if I did). I am hoping to find someone who will rent my condo. I think my chances of renting are much better than selling at this point. I've been viewing the rental statistics in my area over the last few months and things look pretty good in terms of places being able to rent. I just hope it remains that way through the summer. Good luck!
