  1. I heard that U of Chicago Divinity School holds interviews before admission (I remember it was an NT applicant). I haven't seen more people report "interviews" though. So, only those who have been interviewed are eligible for admission? Is that so?
  2. Did you have an interview?
  3. I got absolutely nothing from nowhere and i'm freaking out. 6:00 pm on Friday, that seems to be a generic email or at least not a one-to-one email. How come I don't have any decision notification...what's going on???
  4. So how did you get to know that you are rejected? (I mean, that you are not one of those 3-4 people.) I'm applying to both programs and I'm wondering if they have already sent out acceptances. I'm leaning towards "yes" since it's pretty late now for Chicago. Thanks!
  5. assumed rejections? but acceptances are true?
  6. obviously we are rejected?
  7. And maybe natural sciences programs have more objective standards?
  8. Understandable but interesting. 30-50 applications for one sub-field (sometimes the whole department, depending on its size) and it takes at least 2 months to hear a word. Some programs may have 500 applicants (chemistry, physics, for example) and people hear back by mid-January. The best explanation I've ever heard is that they have to read the writing samples while natural sciences program committees don't need to do that, which is about 1000 double-spaced pages, comparable to a week's reading assignment. The later it is, the harder it gets to make plans for the summer and next year.
  9. Comparative Semitics recently admitted students. How about Northwest Semitic/Hebrew Bible & ANE?
  10. A professor from NELC, U of C said that he only knew the information for the archaeology admissions and that the Dean will notify students of the final decision soon. I think that this is the euphemism for "yeah, you are right, you got rejected". It's been just too long since they first notified someone. I guess students admitted to HB/ANE or NWS just didn't bother to submit their results here. When I applied last time, I contacted a different professor when I heard that somebody had got in an ancient program at Chicago, and he frankly told me that people not invited were to be rejected (it was exactly Feb. 11). Seems that I have to wait longer for the rejection this time. How considerate! Not expecting to go anyway.
  11. That's understandable. One has to see the letter to be 100% assured. But your case sounds a lot more certain than mine.
  12. Well the thing is that I have not yet received anything like an "unofficial admission", so everything is based on hints. The most direct one is from my POI, who is also my current academic adviser. He said that "it's very likely that you can stay, if that's your desire. But it's not final yet". Something like that. A current PhD student told me something more certain, saying that "Prof. X wants to take you, A and B, three students this year". So I don't even know if the department has approved of their nominations. It's only from another professor that I heard something like "the admission office is doing their work now". It turned out that last year they did not send unofficial admissions so everyone had to wait till the day. It might be the same this year so I have to wait for another month. This is killing me.
  13. I do have a friend who got into the ThD but not the PhD last year. They have different sources of money. So there is still hope!
  14. Do this kind of things happen? I heard hints, some of which are quite obvious, that I the sub-field I'm applying to wants to admit me (have some insiders' news), and I recently heard from a professor that the decisions seem to be under review (or being processed) by the admission office. He said that he hopes that "the admissions will keep you here and that you'll choose to stay with us" (I'm studying here right now in a master's). Does this mean that the admission office will choose again from those nominated and offer admission only to a few (that is, whether they'll keep me is uncertain), or that these are just some procedures that everyone can safely go through (assuming that all the materials are authentic and accurate, such as transcripts, scores, etc.) Thank you for your insights in advance.
  15. Is it the Phd or the Thd that unfortunately will not take you?
  16. It might be later than usual this year. And they do have a strong applicant who's already doing an MA there. They want someone who will definitely come so they don't lose the fellowship. Therefore, I think the internal applicant may have a better chance.
  17. his POI is also the DGS. So, hard to tell. I'm becoming pessimistic.
  18. News: a friend of mine was accepted to U of Chicago yesterday. Archaeology. So ancient field applicants were notified a little later? Either case, I didn't get any word from Chicago.
  19. Prof. Stager just retired. So no classes available at Harvard at present. Things may change in the next few years but...they have not done much to replace Huehnergard, so...
  20. Sorry but I'm not sure. I don't believe my last interview with them was anything selective or part of the review process. Because I had heard from Prof. JAH that I would be accepted before Prof. NP'E notified me of the interview, and she stated clearly that it was for the possibility of doing a TA-ship. So I would guess that they don't do interviews regularly. Unfortunately I finally didn't go there and have to apply again now...
  21. No email at all? Hope that you are not visiting North Korea. If you are visiting China, my country, you may want to watch out for gmail shutdowns, it's very unstable. However, other emails work fine.
  22. I don't think they'll test you like that. I once had a skype interview, last time when I applied, with Austin, and they tested my modern Hebrew (whole interview done in Hebrew). But it's only because my major was modern Hebrew and they needed people to TA their classes. They will not ask you to recite some psalms or parse a verb in front of them. I think.
  23. I heard today that Harvard already have choices for their 3 admissions (ancient). They haven't contacted anyone yet. They may need departmental approval, things like that.
  24. You mean you are also accepted to Chicago, or?
