I wonder how many people are on the list...

Congrats! Didn't know that Egyptology was already accepting new students. Prof. Manuelian is super nice and extremely helpful.

That's true. I think it only makes sense to remain on the list if one doesn't have another acceptance or if Yale is the first choice regardless.

waitlisted by Yale

U of Chicago Div School offers a PhD, though. They also offer MA instead of MTS. Is it true that in Europe many Bible degrees are more often than not ThD-s? I think one professor at Toronto NELC is a ThD from Helsinki. I think this is a very good example that a ThD doesn't prevent you from teaching at a non-seminary institution.

Finally Harvard GSAS has made its decisions.

Yale has sent out notifications but there will be a waitlist. Don't know how long it is.

They seem to have gotten the permission to start searching for a new philologist.

That's true. But it's a three-year non-renewable position. Just like Dr. B's position, who left Harvard for a high school teaching position after this three-year lecturership last year. A great Akkadian teacher, always helpful. What a loss! What is the GSAS thinking about? I'm sorry but in my previous post by DSG I meant DGS, so Prof. S. And it's pretty reliable. I don't know how exactly the GSAS wants to reduce it, but considering that Jewish Studies and Islamic Studies are much stronger programs than ANE currently, I can't interpret it in a more optimistic way.

Harvard GSAS is forcing NELC to reduce the number of incoming students according to DSG. The ancient field is probably in danger. I hate the GSAS... Besides, has Yale already sent out results? I saw one post in result research.

Just to comment on my own post: I feel irritated that the PhD notifications would be sent out (theoretically) later than the HDS master program. Two years ago I got the admission letter on Mar. 11 and I told myself that it's typical for master programs. Now GSAS would seek to surpass the HDS (master program) in procrastination. Well maybe I'm not using the word correctly but I'm angry anyway...

NELC did not contact admits, I'm afraid. Maybe there is some misunderstanding. They do have a shortlist which they have discussed with the Deans last Tuesday, but the GSAS will take another week or so to release the results. I just called and they told me that decisions will be made by Mar. 15. I'm not sure if they contacted anyone from the ancient field. I guess that they would only tell you that you are high on list rather than that "you are admitted". Because anything can happen with the GSAS.

I don't remember him mentioning the interview. So probably just being shortlisted. It does sound pretty strange, though.

You are welcome. I honestly don't know. He has another acceptance so this could be a back-up choice. Plus he's not officially accepted to JHU yet, so it's hard to tell...

NYU Hebrew and Judaics will have their initial meeting on March 8.

Hi, it was a classmate. I didn't email them because I'm not counting on JHU right now. Sorry but I've no idea how many people got on the list. My classmate got a call a few days ago.

2013-2014 M.A./M.T.S/M.Div Application chitchat

I believe you are still waiting for HDS. I think they offer grants and stipends to admitted students. Most of the people I know here do not need to pay much tuition and we get around $900/month as stipend+insurance, which is rather rare for master programs. But I also know of students who don't receive stipends. It might be need-based, according to what you indicate on the separate financial aid application. Also Tufts history department has near-full-scholarship positions for masters. -
I think not particularly good for out-of-state students. And perhaps you have to teach right away.

I thought that presentation would precede publication. At least my academic adviser told me so. He doesn't like "pre-mature" publications, but said that presentations would be good exercise and preparation for serious publications in future (not necessarily immediately and not necessarily the same paper). I presented last year at SBL in Chicago as a master student. I felt terrible, as a foreigner, non-native speaker, reading a paper written a year before the event when I just finished my BA. But my professor encouraged me and I appreciate that. I personally don't think it's possible at all to "skip" the "garbage" phase in one's work as a student in humanities. So I was a first-time presenter and a first-time participant last year in Chicago, which was not enjoyable at all. But at least I got to understand how everything looked like and felt like. I didn't expect to attract any attention (any attention obtained by that paper would not be particularly positive attention, I knew it, but they did accept it anyway so that's why I said they were lenient with first-time presenters), being in the same session with two pretty famous professors and one advanced doctoral student. I submitted that proposal and paper simply because I wanted to know if what others had told me was true. I mean, I've met a much more advanced graduate student with several years of graduate work, who told me that even participating the conference was an unrealistic idea for students, especially masters, and I wanted to know what that meant. I decided after that presentation that I might want to wait until I enroll in a phd program and maybe pass my generals/qualifications to present again. In sum, I think garbage papers are unavoidable in one's career and I personally would rather read trash aloud (T-R-A-S-H~~~) than publish trash and let others see it in print. At the same time, I'm not sure how low their standards are, I guess if one has five "garbage" national SBL presentations (before phd application!), then we would need a good many garbage-accepting conferences, which would be fun.

I'd go with the SBL. They are at least lenient with first time presenters...

i'll ask him right now!

I didn't apply; I have a friend who got rejected. We both are doing our masters here. But one of the admitted students might be a girl who also studies here. I guess.
