I'm not sure. But Yale said (a different department though) they will not call or interview those who have visited recently.

Thank you! Is it from the POI or the school? I'm applying to the OT program but I guess both belong to the "Bible" concentration. I haven't heard anything from them yet so perhaps I don't have much chance now.

Congrats! What program are you applying to? Divinity School? Which sub-field? Thanks!

A friend of mine has an interview coming up in a week or so.

Thank you very much! Best of luck to you too.

Exactly. I heard that this year the committee will mean in mid- to late Feb. Although last year the final result was released on the 17th already.

I did. I really liked their atmosphere. Very friendly. Prof. Olyan is a smart and knowledgeable person and sometimes seems to have different opinions on certain academic issues. Everyone is helpful and they arrange the visit for you. Plus a free lunch. But I sort of regret not applying to the West Asian department. I have two friends who got into that program (and declined) but don't know anyone who got into RS. RS seems to have more applicants and fewer spots. And, you would still be able to study with Prof. Olyan that way. So I may have made a wrong decision.

About Yale: I asked students and professors, and it seems that the interview is not mandatory: they don't interview those who have visited, if they happen to want to admit them.

I asked a student from another department and it seems that the interview doesn't sound so "selective". According to her, faculty members would call you only if they would like to offer you a spot, and want to figure out whether Yale is your first choice. It doesn't sound like interviewing five to pick two, things like that. But I could be wrong.

Hi I'm taking 2nd year Akkadian and Ugaritic at Harvard. They are offered not by HDS but NELC, so technically not affiliated to the Div. School at all. Besides, there are only three of us in the Akkadian class and 2 of us in the Ugaritic class, so as you can imagine, I guess there is no motivation for the school to open a summer language program in these rare languages (rare compared with Greek, Hebrew, German, French, Latin and other modern languages). How about the BTI?

sometimes the department just wouldn't say...

He is also nice and his lectures are hilarious.

Really? You mean Levenson? He looks nice and humble though...and of course very funny.

Prof. Machinist will retire in two years and he will be away for a year at Goettingen. But he's a really great professor and nice to everyone. He told me that the department will replace him as soon as possible, but seeing what they have done to replace Profs. Huehnergard and Hackett, I'm not confident in this. I'm currently doing a master's at Harvard and have asked Prof. Machinist when the seminar of comparative Semitics will be offered. He said 2013 spring but now it's cancelled again. Prof. Stager has just retired. Harvard is living on visiting archaeology professors from Israel. Prof. Teeter is great, but he is at the Div. School and so far it is still not certain whether he will get a tenure. But if you like ANE in general Prof. Steinkeller is still very active and they are hiring a new 1st millennium expert.

I know one guy who got in HDS but didn't make it into Religion. He is in Jewish studies, though. Same teachers, in this case, Prof. JDL, but he got into only one program. There are different sources of money.

I'm applying from HDS to NELC only. Prof. M told me that this suits me and HDS/Religion doesn't. But it seems that I'm taking risks. If he doesn't accept me, well, which is of course possible, I'll be regretting not having applied also to HDS.

Do you mean next Monday? First day of class? Also, is it just Harvard Committee of Religion or, in the case of Hebrew Bible, NELC as well? Thank you!

I heard from Prof. Kraemer that they have three levels of courses. So I guess the highest level ones are designed only for graduate students (I doubt that they have master students, so prob. doctoral students). One of their students told me that he liked that because it prevents beginning students to sit in the same classes with advanced students, so that the discussions can go more smoothly. But I'm not sure if they are seminars. To be frank I'm an international student and where I come from we don't have what is labeled as "seminars". I mean, for language courses or text-reading courses, there is naturally more discussion going on and, otherwise the instructor sort of dominates the discussion. I've audited one seminar at my institution now in the US, it seems to be a normal course with longer readings and longer paper assignments, plus a presentation. Perhaps it's because our professor likes talking a little more than others? I mean, I did not feel a big different between this one and the type of courses your described at Brown.

I guess for HB and ANE, U of Chicago, Johns Hopkins are great places. Harvard is still good but some professors left the department. I think Austin, Brandeis, NYU are also nice places to study, right? At Yale and Brown they are separated in different departments so you may have to decide where to apply.

True. Dates may vary from year to year, too. Thanks.

i think it depends on the sub-field or your specific area of concentration.

Anyone know if Yale's NELC department has sent out invites for interview? I read in previous posts that last year they had one in late January, if so, I guess invites should have been sent by this time of the year, assuming that they allow people a week to arrange their schedule. Not sure if I should already assume rejection this early.

I hope the Religious Studies Department doesn't make decisions at the same time, in which case I would assume rejection...I'm applying to Israelite religion. I emailed both departments (Egyptology and AWA) and was encouraged to apply to Religious Studies. Didn't know that Egyptology would accept students so early. I have a friend who got accepted last year to the program, and he was interviewed in February.

In 2011 I had an interview with Austin (Hebrew Bible/ANE). But it was held in Hebrew to prove if I had the ability to serve as a TA for Modern Hebrew class if admitted. so I'm not sure whether that's the normal kind of interviews they regularly do.
