Apparently the Comm Dis secretary also starts an e-mail thread that students can join to set up housing to other cdis grad students.

Just to play devil's advocate for a moment -- we need to remember that some applications are just really weak. I'm not talking about "Somewhat lower GPA but lots of clinical and research experience", I'm talking like, 2.0 and no experience kinds of applications.
There has to be a way to weed these out. Otherwise it would take a century.

BTW -- does GA = graduate assistant?

Nope! I know what my decision is (I saw it), but if I hadn't been checking their system, I still wouldn't know. I just feel like if I paid a fee to have my application considered, any school should be courteous enough to notify me! Especially since it isn't cheap   .

I mean, my undergrad program let us know that grad school is extremely competitive and we needed to keep our grades up if we ever wanted to be accepted. But I kept my grades up, I scored fine on the GRE, I held a NSSLHA board position, a peer advising position, and was a member of an honors group. I also had a very related internship. But it seems that no matter how high my grades were, because I took such a rigorous course load (as a double major, no less), I can't compete with those who have 3.98s with a less competitive program and less course rigor.

I feel like I was misled by even the programs I applied to (aside from UNC-CH, since I knew that was competitive when I started).

i totally agree. If I hadn't had to take Speech science, hearing science, chemistry, and neuro I would have a 4.0 too. And at a few of the schools I applied to, they seem to give priority to out of field applicants. I think it's all about the money. The out of field applicants will have to take a bunch of leveling courses required for the KASA requirements, so the schools will get more money out of them.

I'm really irritated by this whole out-of-field thing. I know at many schools, they accept 35-40 students, and that number INCLUDES the out-of-field students. I don't feel like that's totally fair. Many of us struggled through 4 years of difficult classes (chemistry, 2 A&P classes, etc) for a speech-language pathology degree, and then that works AGAINST us during admissions? If I had majored in something like education, I'm sure my GPA could have been exceptional.

I know this is probably an unreasonable anger to have, but I have it.

I don't think it's really fair to say that their educational experiences are less "meaningful" than yours, they're just different. Also, in speaking with professors on the admissions committee at my undergrad, I learned that most adcomms certainly DO take into account your major when looking at a GPA and even consider the rigor of your undergrad institution itself. And honestly, while speech and hearing science is a challenging major, it's certainly not the toughest out there by any means and I think many students come to speech from even more challenging majors like pre-med or bio or neuro. I applaud them and am happy to see students from those fields show interest in our field.

Anyway, long story short, you can make guesses about other people's applications, but you never get to actually see them so you don't know what else it is that makes them appealing. Maybe their SOPs are better, maybe they have stellar GREs, maybe their letters are even more glowing than yours, maybe they have other life experiences that make them better candidates. You really just don't know and it's unfair to make assumptions.

Ok I just got off the phone with someone at NW. She sounded semi-annoyed that I called asking about decisions (whoops). but she said she doesn't really know when they'll be sent out exactly. she said maybe next week, maybe longer than that... not very helpful, but at least it's something!

Um... I think the OP was just having an online vent.  We shouldn't assume this is how the OP presented themselves at interview, or that the vent is indicative of deep psychological problems.  Four rejections in one day is enough to upset anyone.

V=32nd percentile, Q=77th (for CS!) percentile, and AW=11th percentile.
Harsh is an empty bank account and a stack of rejections letters.

    57.84% chance.

Ok, seriously, your Verbal is abysmal and your Quant is quite low. (Your AW is also extremely low.)
I don't mean to be harsh here, but it's best you know. You will want to study hard and retake.
    Good luck.

jmarti, sorry I didn't mean to freak you out! lol. It's just that I've researched them on edfind and they only accept 44 applicants, which is pretty low considering the high number of applications they receive
