First two official rejections received yesterday from Emory and Boston College. Afraid I'll be getting 0 acceptances again this year. Really hoping someone takes an offer somewhere else at Baylor so I get in off the wait list.

Sorry to here about this.  Hopefully something good can happen with Baylor.

  2. I am already in a PhD program in Anthropology, but I am applying this season to a religious studies program. Plan B would be to try to trudge through and finish up here.

  3. I started this past fall and love it here. I am socio-cultural. Last year the waiting was excruciating, but I was fortunate. I have had some great class and next semester should be more of the same. There are many smart and helpful advanced students that that have been generous with good advice too. Good luck to everyone applying.

  4. Do you already have a body of work in film or photography?  The few dedicated visual/media anthro departments are extremely competitive.  You may find more luck looking for a program centered on your cultural interest, then augmenting your visual skills on your own.  This is what I am doing: lots of practice, meetup foto groups, and the occasional continuing-ed class.  If you just want to make films, without really being a social scientist, then consider an MFA or film school.

  5. Online registration has already started for my program.  While I am still waiting for my immunization hold to clear, one class I wanted has already filled up with  an additional 4 on the wait list.  I guess there will always be a wait list!

  6. With respect to the last post, I'm still curious about the lifestyle in Cleveland. I was accepted to CWRU(Cleveland), Tulane (NOLA), and Virginia Tech(Blacksburg), and I have never visited Cleveland. I'm definitely a big city kind of person, with a work hard party hard mentality. Is Cleveland a good place for that or not? Are there many bars and dance clubs open late (past 2am)? How open and active is the attitude there in general? Any advice or anecdotes about the actual lifestyle of a CWRU grad would be helpful!

P.S.: I come from Omaha, NE, which is a growing city. I despise the ridiculous winters we get here, but the summer weather is really beautiful. Honestly, between that and the city lifestyle, it's a big factor in pushing me to Tulane.

So where did you decide to attend?  I am going to Tulane this fall.  However, I also attended Case back in the late 90s for an MBA.  Loved the school, hated the winters.

Good luck to all the future Spartans!

  7. I would disagree with taking out any loans.  There are a few professional degrees that pay back quickly enough to cover loans.  I don't believe you are doing one of those.  If you need money to live (but not to live well) then my humble advice is to work or wait for funding. The one debate I think is valid is between work experience versus networking.  To me, this questions boils down to whether one will do enough networking to offset the value of some work experience. Is the work at least arguably connected to your long term goals?  Can you "network" on weekends, during and between classes?  Will the networking be high quality or just chit chatting at the coffee house?

  8. One idea is to scan paper notes into a per class pdf file on a weekly basis.  This way you can still have them with you, without all the bulk of the paper.  This is what I am planning to do as I like both paper and digital methods.

  9. AADS at FIU is having a conference this week (Thurs/Fri/Sat) on Tourism in Africa and the Caribbean. Some GSS people will be chairing sessions including Percy Hintzen. He will also be giving the keynote at the grad student conference next week. Both are open to the public. Message me if you want more info.

Thanks jmu! I was already planning to attend the Sustainability conference.  I suppose I will see you there.  I'll be wearing a red carnation on my lapel. :)

  10. I agree with all the sentiments expressed here.  Finish and then reflect on what makes you happy.  Perhaps working in your field will be much better than education in your field.  I have been doing corporate finance for the last 12 years after finishing my MBA.  Now headed back for PhD in Anthropology.  Each accomplishment  builds to next one and shows anyone looking that you can get to done!

  11. In general, the Air is easily the better choice. I do not think one feature that most of us have no real necessity for is enough of a counterpoint.

I see from you signature that you doing film and visual type studies.  Do you edit video or photos on you MBA?  What programs and how do they perform?  I have a desktop PC and use Premiere Pro 5.5 and Lightroom 4 for my edits. But I will need a laptop for Fall and need to pick a lightweight but solid performer.

  12. I finished my BS in 1996.  Finished a JD/MBA in 2001.  Haven't been in a class room since.  Not only that, but the BS was in psychology, although I did take the only Anthro class my school offered.  I have been both very stressed and very confident about this upcoming semester.  I have done graduate work before, but this topic is still uncharted academic territory.

    I plan to:

    1. attend a few local school-based conferences.

    2. take some languages courses this summer.

    3. reading some articles pulled from JSTOR (still have access from the law school)

    4. currently taking a Coursera course on Sustainability

    5. will asking my advisor for a reading list

    6. scour GradCafe for any insight and ideas to get me throught it all

    7. sleep with interesting anthro text books under my pillow, hoping for some osmosis effects

  13. When I did my masters many of us had business cards.  The local kinkos (before fedex) had the school logo and colors already available and the title we used was MBA Student.  But this was business school and we all fancied ourselves as future CEOs, CIOs and CFOs.

I now have business cards for my blog and photo business, so I'll just keep using these.

  14. Anything from The Balvenie.

My personal favorite is the 17-year-old Doublewood, single-malt scotch.  Aged in two different oak barrels.  Never fails to chase my blues away!

Edit:  Repeat after me: "Tequila is not my friend!"

  15. I also think that the accusation is a bit untoward.  But it still could be true in this particular case.  For one thing, we don't know the age of the OP/advisor.  People do compare and contrast life milestones and the advisor could be doing such.  Also, if the typical student much younger, the advisor could be wondering why it took the OP so long it get started and is giving her a hard time.  Perhaps these life choices are perceived to be the cause of the OPs delay.  Maybe the OP is always blathering on about her life and has alienated others, including the advisor.

I hope the OP comes back and sheds more light on this issue.
