  1. so a very basic question- where do you find out about conferences? I'm in the UK, so it may be a little different- butis is just through your undergraduate institution?
  2. I was told I was on wait list at Penn State in late Feb. I emailed them yesterday for update. They said situ still fluid, wouldn't be surprised to make an offer on April 15th....I'm going to hang on, bethought other schools getting a bit annoyed..
  3. anybody else wait listed for funding at Fordham for MA? Wait is killing me, resisting urge to email asking if there has been any movement....Other schools now starting to nag about my decisions...
  4. I'm enjoying (some of) this debate- thanks to those who have given introductory reading to animal studies- I'll read and see what I think! Personally, my interests recently have turned to male friendship in literature of all periods. Like most interested in friendship, I came to it first in early modern reading, but am interested in its application in 20th century British and American fiction - Lawrence, Conrad, and (tentatively) Roth, Bellow . Anyone know if any schools have a reputation for, or a particular professor in, friendship/ Roth etc ? It obviously overlaps with a lot of queer theory (also an interest), but I wondered if anybody knew of individuals/ institutions fostering this more specific interest. Thanks- and thanks to all who have constructively contributed to this debate.
  5. This might be more trouble than it is worth, but what is animal studies? Any introductory reading you could recommend?
  6. My feelings exactly. Three offers made on April 15th last year (!)- going to try and pretend I'm fine with waiting that long.....
  7. No movers from CUNY English wait list? Also wondering how the Open house went on Friday- anyone go?
  8. In at Fordham (MA)- BUT: No funding....'very high on a wait list' for some... anyone know if Fordham tend to offer partial as well as full funding?
  9. I had the same thing - only knew when I got an email from them asking why I hadn't sent some visa documentation they needed- that was two weeks after I should have received my offer letter from them!
  10. Thanks ZacharyBinks for posting the response- and thanks Trip for the info. I think we've got a way to go yet...
  11. Congratulations on two great offers. London will be more expensive than Edinburgh, though neither is unmanageable, and both are wonderful cities. Both are of course very well connected. In terms of reputation, for what it is worth, UCL probably has the edge- it certainly has a better international reputation. Both, however, are obviously top tier programs, with UCL the most prestigious in Britain after Oxbridge. I've probably not helped! Good luck making your decision- you'll be well placed to pursue a Ph.D after attending either university.
  12. No news yet... I've not been in contact, apart from saying I wasn't attending Open House. Let me know if you find out your place on the list!
  13. Contact with the school has been encouraging, and the courses offered within the program look interesting. But as an international student, I am unsure as to the value of an MA from Syracuse over doing an MA here in the UK. I hadn't heard of Syracuse before I did research into funded MAs, so have some catching up to do now...
  14. Anybody else accepted at Syracuse for English MA? Would love to know what you think of the course/ school/ etc.
  15. Just got accepted, with full funding, to Syracuse for their English MA. Anybody got any thoughts on the program, or on Syracuse? Any info/ experience would be really appreciated.
  16. I'm on the wait list too. Really hope we hear back from them before the open house...
  17. Has anyone (apart from one luck chap with a scholarship) heard from Stony Brook? Not heard it much mentioned on these forums.
  18. OK, thanks both for responding, that makes things a little clearer. Yes, 'wait-listed' would have been more straightforward...I hope we all hear something soon.
  19. Thank you both for responses, that's helpful. A trip to New York would not really be feasible, given that it would be very close to the deadline for my coursework. I suppose it is heartening to hear I'm still in the running at least.
  20. Apologies, donthate, I wasn't familiar with 'finalist' in this context- it essentially means 'candidate', then, given they haven't made rejections? It just seemed an oddly elaborate way of saying, 'not all decisions have been made yet'. And given that it is saying I am yet to be accepted, the invitation to open house bemused me.
  21. Can anybody tell me what the hell the following means? I sent an email ( as everybody advises not to do.....) asking if decisions had been made re admissions, and received this in response....I assume it is CUNY telling me not to bug them during decision-making, right? I am writing to let you know that you are a finalist for admission to the Ph.D. Program in English at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY). We hope shortly to give you news about admissions and financial aid decisions for the coming year, although these decisions continue to be made through April 15th. We will be emailing with periodic updates on our admissions process. You are invited to join our Open House for Prospective Students on March 15. Please see the attached flyer. Anyone else got this/ familiar with cryptic wording?
  22. What are people's thoughts on NYU-more admits coming? or are the two posted it for the grad cafe cohort??
  23. I've just had the same problem, so perhaps a technical fault. It doesn't happen to be the middle reference as it appears on the 'check status' page, does it?
