  1. Michigan girl, you're absolutely right. Thanks for the info. I didn't realize it was so much harder at Michigan to get declared in-state than at other schools. Oh well. I would love to go through, but even with a scholarship, I would have to take out way more loans than I think I'm comfortable with. Nicolemae, I really liked it. My one gripe is they scheduled only one campus tour, and it was during the interviews so I couldn't go. I realize that in grad school, you're usually limited to one or two buildings, but I would like to have seen the campus more. However, I found everyone extremely friendly and helpful. I've always heard nothing but good things about UM. Also, I stayed in a Red Roof Inn with a Big Boy attached. Does it get any fancier than that?
  2. I heard about the scholarships too and have one internship offer. I think I'm still not going to be able to cover the cost of out-of-state tuition though. If I don't get more funding anywhere else, maybe I'll move to Michigan and re-apply or see if I can defer my admission to Fall 2014. Oh, money...
  3. Hi there, I know I saw some other people post about being accepted to the Masters Higher Ed. program at the University of Michigan, and I thought it deserved its own thread. Is anyone else attending the Campus Visit Day this Friday? I just got my schedule and saw I only have three interviews scheduled. That seems a little low to me, but I'm looking forward to them. I am also looking forward to seeing the campus and meeting some people in person. It makes this whole process feel a bit more real. Who's with me?
  4. I applied to a Ph.D. program at Curry, and I had a phone interview with a professor back in December. I heard last Friday that I didn't get into the Ph.D. program but was still being considered for the Masters program, and those decisions should be going out end of February/beginning of March. To answer some of your questions, 1) The professor I talked to said Ph.D. funding was guaranteed for four years. When I asked if it was reasonable to get through the program in four years, she said students have managed to do it, even if they don't have a background in Higher Ed. 2) When I got rejected from the Ph.D. program, I asked if there was funding for Masters students. Nope. There isn't any. Good luck to everyone waiting to hear. I don't know about you all, but I'm glad February is winding down. It's been a long couple months.
  5. I agree with arglooblaha's advice about exploring neighborhoods in person since not everything will be posted online. My favorite neighborhood in Columbus is definitely Grandview. I describe it as the closest you can be to downtown (and campus) without feeling like you're downtown. I live within walking distance to a Starbucks, a grocery store, about four bars, plenty of restaurants, and a park. It's not an undergraduate area at all. My neighbors are working adults. However, campus is just a five minute drive away. It really is a pretty area. There are plenty of apartments in VV. Timing might be a bit tricky though since lots of students are apt to be searching at the same time. Good luck in your search, and feel free to contact me if you find an apartment and want in the inside story of what type of neighborhood it's in.
  6. They don't know what they're missing, EdNerd! I know exactly what you mean about how it's a relief to know something, but mostly it just sucks. I hope you get some good news soon.
  7. Hi all, I've lived in Columbus for over 10 years, and I think it's such a great city. I haven't read the whole thread, but in case this hasn't been posted yet, http://www.metro-rentals.com/ is a great place to search for apartments. I once had a 1br in VV for $350, but it was seriously tiny. I would expect to pay more like $500-$650. I recently lived in a 1BR in Grandview for $550. My girlfriend also had a 1BR in Clintonville for $400. I agree with the suggestion that Olde Town East is a little more removed from campus, but you also get more bang for your buck there. My favorite apartment in Columbus was through Kohr Royer Griffith - http://www.krg1.com/ They seem to really take care of their properties. I once looked at one owned by http://www.myersrealty.com/, and it wasn't taken care of at all. Maybe that apartment was the exception, but especially for those of you trying to rent from out of town, I would be cautious with them. ETA: You can find deals on mentro-rentals, but that site seems to skew a bit on the expensive side. Don't let it make you think every 1BR in Victorian Village is $1,000/month.
  8. Thanks, EdYouKateOr Judging by the timelines of previous years, I predict a lot of notifications will be going out this upcoming week. I feel like I'm going to break my email from checking it so often.
  9. Hey all, Congrats to those who have received good news lately I just got rejected from the University of Maryland's Student Affairs Master's program. I don't care for this feeling at all! Any hints on how to take the sting out of rejection? I have a number of schools I am waiting to hear back from, and now I'm worried I'll have a string of rejection letters coming my way. Also, could somebody please tell me how to add a signature? I am new here. Thanks! Applied: Oh, a bunch of places... Interviewed: UVA Accepted: Florida State Rejected: Maryland
