Don't feel nervous. Remember, these schools are trying to convince you to enroll at their schools. If anything, enjoy the process and getting pampered.

I think only a couple programs do interviews. I can say for sure that Indiana and Michigan don't do interviews.

Good to have some company on board. I focus on Mexican-American and Latina/o history as well. You hit the usual suspects on your list as many scholars in our field are located in the Southwest (Mostly the UCs). I would suggest looking into Michigan. Anthony Mora has done some great work in what you're interested in. The Latina/o Studies program there is also very strong. I visited just last week and was very happy to see how interdisciplinary the history department is there. The University of Chicago may also be of interest for you since Ramon Gutierrez teaches there. Lastly, I assume you're applying to Stanford to work with Albert Camarillo. Unfortunately, he is set to retire the next couple of years and is no longer taking new students. It'll be exciting to see whom they hire to replace him.

My former adviser at Indiana confirmed this, unfortunately. He added that even if were I gain admittance to Illinois, that it wouldn't be an ideal situation since there is so much uncertainty.

Don't let the rankings discourage you. If you determined this was your top choice then it seems that this program was a perfect fit with your interests, which will go a long ways. Be excited. PhD programs, no matter the rankings, are incredibly difficult to be admitted to.

Yeah sure, rankings are completely subjective. But rankings also have a lot to do with placements for employment much more than "best facilities and libraries." It's an unfortunate reality that we have to accept. I don't think talking about rank is insensitive to others. This forum is made so we can discuss these issues openly in the hopes we all make informed decisions.

There's a forum elsewhere with a good discussion on the MAPSS here. One thing you should be aware of, however, is that if you apply for the PhD you'd need to take a gap year the following year. The reason being that professors will not write you a LOR based on the fact they won't know you well enough in the first semester.

Does anyone have insights about living in the Munger Graduate Residences?

Speaking of meetings with faculty members; I have a good idea of what I want to talk about with my POI, but not with others who I view could potentially serve on my committee. Any crucial questions I should ask and/or be mindful of when talking to complementary faculty members?

Judging from the results page it looks like all those schools have sent out acceptances. However, only UVA has sent out rejections. Not sure what this means for you.

We should probably refrain from sending unnecessary emails. I realize most of us are still anxiously waiting to hear back from many programs. However, be mindful that the DGS, graduate coordinators, and staff are busy organizing campus visits, working with current graduate students, etc. I think as a courtesy we should let the process play itself out.

Pardon me if I'm reading this incorrectly, but commuting 10 hours away is not sustainable whatsoever. A PhD is a great commitment, and that would not be conducive to your success. I'm not sure what your personal situation is or what your intellectual interests are; nonetheless it sounds like it isn't the time for you to apply just yet. You want to apply to a range of schools (across the U.S) that complement your interests and areas of study. Graduate admissions are extremely competitive. You can only help yourself by applying to schools that are a good fit and showing that in your dossier.

Sounds like nonsense to me. Did you email them inquiring about your application?
