  1. I personally like the really no-name brands (like Aldi's, or my local grocery stores's). Dunno why. But Annie's is good. It's the only kind my gf will eat (she didn't like mac n cheese until she had Annie's). p.s. I miss mac n cheese here in Germany.
  2. Still dealing with this impostor syndrome, eh? I don't think they just feel bad for you because you're black. I think this indicates that they see incredible potential, and have some questions that weren't obviously answered in the application packet. Seriously, this is good news, even if it doesn't lead to an offer.
  3. When will the blood red start dripping down the results page...
  4. They do have the Change and Community series that they publish every two years. I'd say they're at least significant in the study of American politics, if not on the cutting edge anymore. Though Rhode's research - some of it unpublished - is really incredible. Actually, meeting him was the first time I got a real sense of what political science is (although I don't study American politics).
  5. I'd say if the schools fall outside of the same tier, the better rank would probably win. Meaning, 28 on US News vs. 22 on US News will be a matter of fit and money (I know a lot will disagree with me). But 10 on US News vs 25 on US News is a bigger difference in rank. Keeping methodological training and job prospects in mind, it makes sense to take the lower funded offer. Edit: my brain was/is broken. Blame the Superbowl...
  6. We all deserve a Sunday off, even our comprehension skills.
  7. Well I use DB here and they're part of the global ATM alliance with BoAmerica, so that's probably my best bet for withdrawal. I'm not sure what the exchange rate is. I know that PayPal for direct deposits was taking $.04 on every Euro (instead of $1.36 I got $1.32).
  8. Right, but the concern is pre-stipend. Settling in, moving across the country (or ocean), etc.
  9. I'm also worried about the references part of rental leases. All my landlords have been German up to now...
  10. I'm pseudo-international right now. No US phone. I have credit cards, but I'd rather not think of them because, well... application fees are killer. All my money is in Euros, so that will all have to suffer the exchange rate loss (anywhere between 4-10 cents on the Euro). p.s. I'm not trying to one-up you. I have the advantage of having lived in the US and having a gf currently living there. Just expressing some shared concerns.
  11. This is certainly one of my concerns. Especially if you consider the rental deposit, first month's rent, and possibly last month's rent.
  12. Nope, she's a Long Islandah. Currently finishing her masters at Syracuse.
  13. In my girlfriend's case, wherever we end up will require acquiring certification for that state for her profession. For some states this is very easy, and for others it's a real challenge. So that was part of the issue. I also applied to some long shot schools I otherwise would not have applied to, except that she has family very nearby and it was important to her that I tried.
  14. Haha yup, not a New Yorkah in the NYC sense. Though I would love to live in NYC. I have a cousin who's a department chair in another social science field at a school in NYC. She gave up a big home in Vegas for a mini apartment in Manhattan.
  15. On location: Location is important, but not the make or break, I'd say. I much prefer metropolitan living, public transportation (or walking/biking), thirty coffee shops in a mile radius, etc. While this is all important to me, there are reasons I'd give up these things - though I notably didn't apply anywhere I thought I'd be unhappy to live. I did also have to take into consideration my girlfriend's preferences, especially when it came to cities that are far away from NYS (if she is going to move across the country with me, it'd better be somewhere she wants to live kind of thing). I deliberately chose not to pursue a degree outside of the U.S. because I want to conduct research in the mainstream of US political science, and ideally teach in the US as well.
  16. It took me a long time to figure it out... without spaces [ video ] YOUTUBE SHARE LINK [ / video ]
  17. Although, I have met a few student government presidents with egos bigger than their brains. I would believe it if I found out the person inflated their stats significantly in the post, because to them being the student government president is equivalent to having those GREs, that GPA, those publications, etc. And s/he may have reached out for info, just to be told that her/his stats weren't good enough.
  18. I doubt it's connected. But that is odd, and I'm sorry you've been left hanging! I'd suggest getting in touch with the DGS.
  19. HolaUnblocker, because UK Netflix has better movies.
  20. You are just dancing across the acceptance table, huh? Congratulations!
  21. Congrats to Penn State!!!
  22. My letter came long after I was in bed (being 8 hours separated from Boulder). I think like 8 p.m. their time. If you don't hear tonight, you might consider reaching out to them, since they did promise January decisions.
