  1. For the past 3 years, the graduation rate has been 81%, 82%, and 86% respectively... so it's a consistent number

of people each year.  So yeah, seems like a red flag - thanks for sharing your opinion.

    Yes, that would concern me.

phaedra, what about the graduates' employment and Praxis pass rates? Are they also on the low side?  Sounds like something is amiss in that program.

  2. I wish you all the best from someone who started back to school with a 2.0 GPA and took 3 years straight of classes from junior college to a university and it still only got my GPA to a 2.77 overall.  My CSD GPA was 3.3 and last 60 only 3.28.  I looked for any job related to the field during my one year break after undergrad and emailed programs like crazy that year to find the programs that would take a chance on me and formed great relationships with a few programs who either accepted me into their programs or waitlisted me because they knew who I was when my application crossed their desks.

I have read everyones posts in the thread and there are so many valid points that I would like to second, but one that maybe has not come up yet is how important it is to actually use our communicative skills to actually email/call programs to see which program is willing to take a chance on someone like you.  If a program gets an application from someone they have never heard from with low grades, decent GRE's and decent experience they are forced into a tough situation.

If a program gets an application from someone who has emailed/called them and explained their situation and gotten feedback from them and has those same low grades, decent GRE scores, decent relative experiences it puts the program in the situation of being able to feel more comfortable about giving that person a shot because of the relationship that was built through email/calling.  It is much easier to accept someone you know through some type of communication than to take a chance on someone you have no relationship with.

So please, email/call/visit programs and find out which ones would like to take a chance on you.  Follow up with them and ask for feedback and advice.  These grad program coordinators are not unapproachable.  The ones who do not email back or call back are the ones who would never take a chance on you anyways.  There are some who will reply and tell you of schools who they think will take a chance on you.

After all else fails, there are other avenues for those of us who enjoy serving/caring for others.  Some have done special ed or even a regular ed teacher, some have gone on to do other things.  I know you will all succeed in some avenue of caring for others as it shows how much you care through your posts.  Good luck to all of you!

    :)

Excellent advice!  :)   May I just say that you're one of the most helpful and sensible posters on Grad Cafe.  You give useful advice and are never condescending in your approach.   :)

  3. I am anxiously awaiting a decision from Florida Atlantic University speech pathology masters program. Does anybody know how competitive this school is to get accepted? Or when they will be notifying people? My gpa is 3.8 gre v-145 q-150 a-4. I know my verbal gre isn't the best but my quantitative is higher along with my gpa. I really hope I get accepted here!

    Me too!   :)

I met with one of the professors in their program and was told they received almost 400 applications last year.  They accept between 20 to 25 students per year, so approximately a 5% to 6% acceptance rate.  I'd say their program is competitive because it's small and they get so many applicants.  Even Nova, previously known for accepting students with lower GPAs, now has a 3.0 minimum.  The competition to get into a program is insane.

FAU's GRE minimum scores used to be higher;  I think it was 153 for verbal and 149 for Q and 4 for AW.  Now their website states that applicants with scores lower than 145 in V and Q aren't likely to be accepted.  Also, they no longer consider the AW score in their decision.  I don't know what prompted these changes.

Anyway, looking at last year's results, applicants began to receive notification around this time and continued on through March.  We have to be hearing something soon.

    Good luck to you!

  4. One moment I can think I am as good as in, the other I can be sure that I will never, ever get it. Bit of overestimation and imposter syndrome. However, I never had the illusion that I am the best candidate. That seriously not true.

This is me.  My thoughts fluctuate between, 'yeah, I'll get accepted to who are you kidding?'

I can feel my anxiety kicking in now, so I've been tackling house projects to keep my mind off things.  I find myself spending more time reading these forums; not sure what I'm looking for, but it's compulsive. I won't hear any news for at least another two weeks.  My husband jokes that the phrase March Madness will carry new meaning for our family. lol

No nightmares yet, but it's still early. TBH, I truly underestimated how stressful this process was going to be.

  5. All good thoughts... Not sure yet! I wonder if I can find coloring pages of the brain that would be similar to the content of this book... Online search ensuing. Haha, the penny pincher in me comes out... LOL! It is saved in my cart in amazon, however, in case I do decide to get it.

Search for Frank Netter images. I've found them to be the best and most detailed anatomy illustrations. :)

  6. anybody know of any online programs where I can take intro to audiology this summer without having prereqs? I just looked at utah states courses and it looks like you need two prerequisite courses before you can take their intro audiology

The pre-reqs. don't apply if you're a non-degree seeking student.  You can get a waiver to get in that class.  Once you're admitted to the school as non-degree seeking, get in touch with Nick in the COMD dept. to get approval to take the class. USU's staff is very helpful and friendly and really have it together.
