This is seriously torture. I would like to go to the offices in New York and tell them all that they can have $1,000,000 which they will receive anytime between February-July BUT THEY WON'T KNOW THE DATE OR TIME HAHA

    Hey alls!

I just went through and fixed some formatting issues on the spreadsheet. Overall people are doing a really great job of keeping it clean and up to date. I suspect not everyone loves spreadsheets!

    Keep adding information!

FYI: If you are not sure of the input choices, hover over the category header and they will pop up. The colors should autofill.

Umm, nope. I spoke to the research award. It's the only thing I have familiarity with. I don't know anything about the Scholar award but I thought it would be helpful and supportive to share what I do know, that's why I specified in my original post that I was referring to the research award. Sorry for the confusion.

Come sometime in January (hopefully) those applying for research/study awards will, if they make it through the first round receive an email which looks like this:

"I am pleased to inform you that the National Screening Committee of the Institute of International Education (IIE) has recommended you for a grant under the Fulbright U.S. Student Program for the academic year 2013-14. Your application has been forwarded to the supervising agency abroad for final review.  In addition, your application will be forwarded to the program sponsor, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State, for transmittal to the presidentially-appointed J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FFSB).  The FFSB makes final decisions on Fulbright awards.

This letter is not notification of a grant since the number of recommended candidates exceeds the number of awards available.  If you are selected for an award, you will receive notification of your status from the FFSB.  If you are named an alternate or are not selected, you will be notified by IIE.  For further information about the next stage in the selection process, go to the website:  http://us.fulbrightonline.org/information-for-recommended-candidates

Since selection is a lengthy process, the final decision for some countries may not be made before the end of June.  In the meantime, it is important that you advise us immediately if there are factors that could preclude you from accepting the grant. Receipt of a grant is contingent upon: (a) submission of official hard copies of your transcripts (see below); ( completion of the bachelor’s degree for graduating seniors; ( c ) approval by the FSB; (d) concurrence by the supervising agency abroad; (e) medical and research clearances; (f) security factors in the country of your application; (g) availability of funds; and (h) participation in a Pre-Departure Orientation, where required.

Congratulations on your success in the preliminary stages of the competition.
    Sincerely yours,
    Daniel Kramer
    Director, U.S. Student Programs

Please arrange to have official transcripts from your current academic institution (if enrolled) and all institutions from which you received a Bachelor’s or Master’s or doctoral degree sent to:

    OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS
U.S. Student ProgramsInstitute of International Education
    809 United Nations Plaza
    New York, NY 10017

IIE must receive these transcripts by March 1, 2013 at the latest in order for you to continue to be considered for a 2013-14 Fulbright grant. Transcripts must be in the original sealed envelope as issued by the Registrar’s office.  See the website above for more information. "

This was what  I received Nov 6th.

" It is a pleasure to inform you that the peer review process organized by IIE’s Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) has been completed and that you are among those recommended for a Fulbright research award in United Kingdom.
Please know that this peer review process constitutes only the first phase of the rigorous review process Fulbright applicants undergo. CIES will next forward your application to: the United States-United Kingdom Educational Commission in United Kingdom, to the U.S. Department of State and to the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board for final consideration. Applications will be reviewed in light of program priorities and budget. Not all applications that were recommended in the peer review process will be selected for grants."   This is only the beginning of the letter: The middle discusses things to not do at this stage lie book travel. The letter ends like this:     "On behalf of CIES, please accept my heartfelt congratulations on having successfully completed the first stage of the Fulbright review process. Thank you for your interest in the Fulbright Scholar Program and in its important mission, and best wishes for you and your work."   Anyways good luck to all

    Hey all,

I'm newly registered here on GradCafe, but I've been lurking for a few weeks and wanted to try to follow up on this question.  Did anyone else receive a confirmation email from Fulbright or just the one from Embark?  I submitted my application in August and only ever got the automated Embark message, which stated "You will also receive a confirmation email from Fulbright to confirm that your application has been received.  Important: The admissions office may be very busy this time of year and it can take several days before you are sent the confirmation email."  Can't imagine it's an issue and I should probably just sit back, chill out, and wait for the January notification, but if anyone else can let me know they're in the same boat I'd surely feel a little less anxious.  Thanks!

At any rate, I'm applying to the ETA program in Colombia.  From the stats I've looked at it seems like the Colombia program accepts somewhere between 1/6 and 1/7 of the applicants each year.  I'm currently at-large in the working world since finishing my Master's in Spanish Linguistics in 2011, but also applying to PhD programs in second language acquisition and Spanish linguistics.  If I'm accepted to Fulbright I'm hoping to be able to defer any PhD programs until Fall 2015.

Thanks to amirah for updating the spreadsheet, and to everyone for providing a slight respite from my unrest and stress.

    heyo! kermit the frog here..
    No.. but anyway...

For those of those who did not apply last round and don't me, I am a current ETA in Germany... AND I'M LOVING IT!!!!
So, you guys just got through one of the hardest parts of the process.. but unfortunately the hardest part is yet to come. The only advice I have to give is.. Just sit tight. You still have quite a while to wait. Even if the website says you should hear back by a certain date, I would not put too much stock into it. You honestly just never know when you are going to hear back. Last round, some people who applied to the same country heard back within weeks of each other. It's excruciating and frustrating as hell, but I can tell you from the other side it is WELL worth the torture. Good luck to everyone and try and keep your sanity!!!

    Hello my friends!

I have updated the spreadsheet and hope you will use it, love it, find it useful and a possible stress reliever. I know I did last year. Anyone with the link can edit. I left the 'Region' and 'Status' columns populated so you can just cut and paste your details into it. I started the process. Just make changes according to your particular region and needs.

It's fun to see the range of people and connect with others who may be in your field/regional interest.

**What I don't have time to do, however, is police the spreadsheet. So please add with care.** Thank you!!

The notifications are for when you find out your accepted/waitlisted/not accepted status. January is the 1st round notifications. Does that clarify?

Generally unless you are currently affiliated with a university or college you cannot go through the IRB process so it is a moot point. If, however, you are currently a student and you hope to use this research for something school related you may have to go through the process, depending on your project of course.

If you are an alumni, like me, but hope to use your Fulbright research for future dissertation research, like me, things can get a little sticky but it is not un-overcome-able. I had several long conversations about this subject with my school. I have had to do the IRB process before and it is a nightmare for social scientists so if you don't have to do it count yourself lucky. In my case my faculty was going to sort of 'sign off as a co-researcher' on my project so we could get it through the IRB process and thus I would be able to use the data I collected in my PhD work. Hopefully that may still come true. :-)

Just remember human subjects is a school or research facility based thing. Fulbright just wants you to be familiar with, and able to exercise, ethical standards in research. If your app got this far they think you have that skill.

    From Fulbright:

"Ethical Requirements: Applicants proposing research involving human beings or animals as research subjects who plan to formally publish the results or to use the results in a graduate program should have their projects vetted by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at their home institutions. At-large applicants should conduct an individual ethics review ensuring that their proposed projects are consistent with ethical standards for research involving humans as research participants as outlined in the National Guidelines for Human Subjects Research(U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Extramural Research, National Institutes of Health), in the National Guidelines for Animal Welfare at the National Institutes of Health’s Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare or other applicable internationally recognized ethics guidance documents.

Human subjects research includes: clinical investigations (any experiment or study on one or more persons which involves a test product/article, whether a drug, treatment, procedure or device); social-behavioral studies which entail interaction with or observation of people, especially vulnerable populations (i.e., as minors, pregnant women, inmates, drug-users, the mentally impaired, displaced/refugee populations); and, basic scientific research to study the biology of animals, persons or organs and specimens thereof. The most fundamental issues in studies involving human research subjects include: valid scientific questions and approaches; potential social value; favorable risk-benefit ratio; fair selection of study participants and an adequately administered informed consent process."

I know someone who found out she was an alternate last year during the last week of March and then found out she was accepted in early May...so maybe some of you alternates will get full acceptances before some of us even hear a peep.

I think right now my biggest fear is receiving an alternate status and remaining in limbo for the whole summer (which apparently is possible). Yikes.

Normally, I tend to be pretty silly on this forum, to ease the tension and keep up the good vibes, but I just want to give a heartfelt thank you for saying that! As if receiving that email wasn't enough!! Serioiusly, that is one of the nicest things anyone has said to me, much less an internet stranger!! Thanks so much for looking out for me, it really means a lot! I'm sure all the good vibes my friends here on this forum were sending my way must have had some sort of cosmic influence over the Fulbright board!! Seriously, thank you!!!

Is there a way to search through this forum? I forgot to respond to someone and feel like a really jerky guy. Also: to the Japan scholar at Wisconsin: sorry. And it turns out that I won't be heading up there for the LCA program though every time I visit Madison I get swept away in fantasies about living there.

In other news, I popped in to the office of the Fulbright advisor here on campus. She's gotta be younger than I am (and cute) , and I'm even at the low end of the age spectrum for my MA program. She pretty much said don't worry about the sequester/funding cuts - but that it might be something to worry about in future years. What was that Bill Gates quote from this morning? Capitalism means male baldness treatment research gets more funding than malaria research? That sentiment resounds especially poignantly here.

I finally gave in and made an NPR donation today. It's the last day for the pledge drive here. Same out there in the rest of the world?

I guess it's hidden until closed. If enough people vote by this afternoon, and its a super majority in favor, then I'll post it in time hopefully for results.
Also, not directed at anyone in particular, but keep in mind we all have different preferences. So just as it's rather absurd for people to complain that others are chatting in a discussion forum, it's also absurd to tell people they must read, or at the very least skim, a free-flowing discussion when they just want to check results (after all, most grad cafe threads are just updates, questions, and notifications related to awards). And people do have some expectation to that, given the thread is titled "Fulbright 2013-2014." This seems to give everyone what they want.

And on the subject of splitting threads -- I personally am fine with what we have here, the mix of casual chatting and intermittent notifications; I'd rather not have multiple threads to check. That would also make it more confusing for people with questions to know where to ask, and increases the likelihood a question wouldn't get answered because people won't see it unless they are checking both threads.

I don't partake in much of the casual chatting, but it doesn't bother me... it doesn't really take that long to scan posts quickly to glean whatever useful information there is; if all you're interested in knowing is if anyone new has been notified, it'll be pretty obvious at first glance -- if you don't see anyone mentioning it on the most recent page, chances are nothing new has happened. This group is so hungry for news that I think we'll all latch on to whatever we can get

Wondering if anyone else is ready to save ourselves the headache and go ahead and open our own thread for those of us who like to chit chat? I think I would rather not dealn with an angry mob. I am to the point where I am just here for the companionship anyway. The email will get here when it gets here; knowing that Austria or some other country received their emails is not going to make mine get here any faster. It seems like everyone applying to the same country gets their email around the same time, so knowing two minutes in advance hardly seems important.

My favorite subs are AskReddit, WTF, Lifeprotips, thewalkingdead, Frugal, Sherlock, Loseit (trying to get in shape ), AMA, TIL, Explain Like I'm five, and Lanl_German. If you have an Iphone and don't already have it, you should download the Alien Blue app. Dear god, it's wonderful!
