  1. I wondered if anyone knows of/currently works an industry job with a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology or Educational Psychology focusing on more children/family processes based interests? I will be entering a doctoral program in the fall in these "areas" and wanted to keep my options open to positions outside of academia, even though I hope to become a professor eventually after completing my training. Also, anyone know the outlook for professor jobs in developmental psych? Thoughts?
  2. I was wondering if anyone knows how much professors (which I know depend on the field) can make from grants and other types of funding they receive for research on top of their university salaries? I saw that this is can be a common theme, but also heard there is typically restriction or rules in the grant that state how much a professor can receive, how much is allocated to GA's or RA's, etc. Of course this will differ on the amount of funding or grant amount, but wanted to hear how much extra faculty can add to their salaries. FYI* I am going to probably work as a faculty member either in a Psychology department or Education/Educational Psychology department with my research interests.
  3. There is a thread I posts a couple days ago on here asking something similar in terms of people who are interested in Learning Sciences. I am going to attend an Educational Psychology program but it has a Learning Sciences program in the same department, which from the sounds of it actually shares my own interests as well in toy/games and learning. I didn't even know there were programs like this out there until viewing my departments website!
  4. Anyone have suggestions on the best android apps for graduate school? This can be anything from organizers to pdf readers! Bring on the suggestions that help you navigate grad school easier!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Awesome to hear someone with similar interests!!! My school psych background really lead to this area of interests as I felt I really wasn't helping children learn with interventions and all the testing I did (or impacting the way I thought I would). I've found my interests really are more toward helping improve the "tools" educators use and items in and out of school that helps learning (toys, games, etc.). What program are you attending next year RandiZ? You can PM me if you would like.
  7. What is the general consensus with Learning Sciences (LS)? I will be attending an Educational Psychology/Human Development Ph.D. program in the fall and in the department there is a Learning Science "track" (similar to my Human Development track). Is anyone on the forum in a Learning Sciences program? What are your experiences? I ask this because I have an interest in games and learning, esp. in younger children, which is a focus of a couple faculty in Learning Sciences at the school where I mostly likely will accept an admissions offer from. After speaking to some of the professors, it seems to be a great way to combine my interest in child development/parenting with a focus on how children learn and improving the methods and resources to facilitate learning (I come from a school psychology program). I didn’t know about these types of programs and after doing some research sounds like an awesome field. I feel this is a great avenue to focus on with the increase of technology usage by children in and out of the classroom. I have thought of possible careers outside of academia also after my Ph.D. if I don't become a professor, like as a user researcher with a toy company or toy development in industry. Thoughts?
  8. Don't know if this will fit here, but I was accepted into the Human Development Track of the Learning & Developmental Science Ph.D. program at Indiana University last week. Pumped !
  9. Thanks m26! After getting rejected by Purdue's HDFS, I guess my ties are now to be a Hoosier! haha

  12. I thought I would at least start an Educational Psychology applicant thread as I am seeing alot of Ed Psych decisions on the results page. Wanted to see if some of the posters from the results page would post on here (Accepted, Rejected, etc.) I have applied to Educational Psychology and Human Development & Family Studies Ph.D. programs. Also, anyone applied to the Indiana University Learning and Developmental Sciences Ph.D. programs? This is any of the tracks, Learning Sciences, Educational Psychology, or Human Development? Any news yet? Best of luck to all!!!

  14. Rejected from Purdue's HDFS....old news though. Had 4 professors that matched great research wise, but was called by 2 proffesors that had interests in my previous research exp. Figured there would be a good chance of rejection.
