You know, I really hope that everything works out for you, eponine997. In my humble opinion, admission committees have erred in not eagerly accepting you. I will continue to hold out hope that a particular school comes around in their thinking.

I have officially accepted my offer from Penn State. I very much look forward to starting my studies at State College.

Welcome to the 2012-2013 cycle

If anyone still waits on news from Rutgers, I would suggest calling the department. While my application checker still says 'No Decision,' I have been denied. And this finally brings an end to my application season. For those of you still waiting to hear good new, keep the hope. Time still remains. I wish everyone the best of luck over these next 11 days. :-) -

Well, that does complicate things a bit. Still, I would tend to follow the money in this case. After all, you might find that your interests shift a bit after matriculating somewhere. If this happens, I would think it better to go to the school where you will not have to compete for funding immediately. You really do not need the extra pressure. As for taking a while to think things over, I am sympathetic. I am doing just that myself.

Well, I will be darned. So far as I understood it, they had yet to announce all their acceptances. Perhaps they have a bunch of students on an informal waitlist and expect to notify those individuals shortly. They might have a pretty good idea of what their yield will be after the admitted students day . . . -
I actually think that you have an easy choice. From what I have heard from faculty, I do not think that it will matter if you get all your degrees from the same place. (Though the faculty might treat you a bit differently - as they will have known you first as an undegrad.) In addition, so far as I understand, UCSB does not have that much of a better reputation than UCR. The latest US News World and Report rankings supports this. According to it, Santa Barbara is ranked 50th, while Riverside is ranked 54th. In general, I think that rankings after the first 30 or so get a little fuzzy. So there is no compelling reason to think that attending Santa Barbara might improve your job prospects. Given that, I would go with the better funding offer - assuming, of course, that each school is an equally good fit for your research interests.

For those of you still waiting on news from Rutgers, I have heard that everyone will be notified by the end of next week. From what I recall, some of you might be interested to know that. -

I am using Woolrdidge now. While the appendices can be intimidating, I think that the book treats the subject matter well. That said, I found that my understanding of the material increased dramatically when I began reading A Guide to Econometrics by Kennedy. But that might just be me.

The Wonnacott and Wonnacott text is pretty great, I think. I read it in conjunction with Statistics by Freedman, Pisani, and Purves. Taken together, I thought that they provided an excellent foundation of basic statistics and probability theory.

I will certainly take methods as a field - perhaps as my primary one. So, I need constant practice. It was very nice meeting you too, RR! Do you know what book they are sending you?
