  3. Check out this old thread new people: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=15148
  4. From my notes from last year: Yale MA: 660 V / 690 Q / 5 A Georgetown MSFS: 642 V/700 Q/5.2 A WWS MPA: 632 V / 697 Q Elliott MA: 609 V / 679 Q / 5.0 Here are my notes from last year, take all of them with a grain of salt. http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dgmcz8h6_11dfvhhf9s
  5. Here are some words of wisdom from someone who's been there: focus on figuring what you want to get out of grad school. Those above listed schools are fantastically varied in terms of their focuses and strengths and I, therefore, doubt that all of them offer something that matches well with your needs. Between now and, let's say, September, whittle down the list. If you can make a list of why each school matches your needs and interests, you can write a much more persuasive SOP and you won't need to waste your money on schools that you would never attend if they accept you.
  6. Though there is plenty of overlap between the IR and the Domestic Affairs groups, I believe the difference is great enough that the mods should split this forum into two separate forums. This topic has been discussed in the past. Perhaps putting it to a vote would be useful.
  7. It's free. Just sign up.
  8. Wait... Korbel is not at UC Denver? I am man enough to admit my error and say that I had always assumed that.
  9. I have zero experience with this field, but doesn't Denver have a fairly good enviro. policy program? Can anyone confirm or reject that?
  10. Start working on your SOP ASAP as it will be the biggest factor in your application. Once you can articulate clearly what you want to study, why you want to study it, and what direction you hope your career goes, you will have a huge leg up on your competition, especially the directly out of school crowd.
  11. PM me if you would like to be added on my LinkedIn account. I'll be in New Haven this fall doing an MA in IR at Yale.
  12. Gah. There are so damn many peace corp alums who all want to study idev & Africa! Now, I don't deny that this is an important series of issues but can't we have a little bit more diversity? At my meet and greet at one school, I swear, out of a group of 15 people, 8 were focusing on the aforementioned topic group. Just take a look at this poll: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=15142 Hello? Diplomacy? Security studies? *Echo*? Doesn't anyone else get a kick out of making sure states don't blow each other up?
  13. Well, I got into SAIS but not Gtown, so don't let your experience dissuade you.
  14. People, transcribing someone's accent/dialect does not inherently constitute a passing of judgment on someone's intelligence. They spoke with working class Long Island accents and I transcribed what they said accurately.
  15. No. They are not all idiots. Just the ones who think it is funny to catcall someone for wearing a Yale sweatshirt
  16. Yesterday, I drove over to the local community college and signed up for my three-credit macro course. It's about $40 for the application fee and $150 per credit for in-county residents; hence I get away with a sub-$500 course, which is awesome. It meets for 2 hours per day, four times a week, for one month. I happened to be wearing my new Yale sweatshirt, which, while I was walking around campus, occasionally provoked a catcall on the lines of "Hey, buddy! Do ya think ya go ta Yale owah somethin'?" To which I, of course, replied, "Yes..."
  17. Hey, kiddos! I don't know if you remember me from last year (I'm the guy who started this thread), but I made my decision and picked Yale's MA in International Relations! I get to have a mix of professional training and a heavy academic load that will leave me prepared for either a PhD or a straight-up policy career, a combo that none of my other accepted schools could offer.
  18. I find it somewhat amusing that I am shelling out nearly 100k to get a job that pays about as much or considerably less than my previous job as a paralegal (when you factor in overtime hours). But if that's what it takes to do the work I want to do and not do corporate finance law, hells yeah!

    Yale

Any advise on how to find an apartment? Among the avenues I am exploring: 1) Yale Office of Housing off-campus housing postings 2) Craig's List (so many scams!) 3) An acquaintance in New Haven with an apt who will move out this year 4) Calling realtors (Seabury Hill?) Current students: how much should I expect to pay for a studio within a 20 minute walking distance of campus or on a Yale shuttle with a place to park my car?

All this talk about being within a bikeable area sounds all well and good except that New Haven is in New England. Oh what a joy it is to bike in the snow! It doesn't seem that many appts are on craig's list right now. Will this pick up soon?

    Yale

Hi guys! I hit the go button on Sunday and will be going to Yale! Where I'll be living is the next point of interest. If only there were better parking on campus, then the number of options would skyrocket! What are the thoughts on biking in New Haven? Is it safe? I remember on the tour that lots of the streets were very narrow and not exactly bike accessible.
  22. After graduation: 50-55k, unless I do foreign service, which I believe starts at a 45k or 47k pay grade for MA grads. 10 years (if I do not go back to do a PhD): Maybe 100k? Very hard to predict. I doubt it would be more.
  23. Both are fabulous schools. If you check out Fletcher and don't find it to be objectionable (I doubt you will), go there. One caveat: if your field is finance/econ driven, I would say that my first advise should be taken with a grain of salt as SAIS does offer a superb econ/finance driven course of study.
  24. I'm going to do my Macro course at a local community college -- Nassau Community College. As far as CC's go, it is respectable enough and, because of having an in-county mailbox, it will only be about $450 (if I remember correctly).
