This makes me feel better. Also, in case anyone else here is looking for a way to pep me up, who wants to take the gre for me? Just thinking about retaking that goddamn test is making me teary-eyed.Hah, feel free. It's no big deal if you're shut out one year--the main thing is to exploit that as an opportunity to get a handle on what you can do to improve your application, fill up gaps, and so on. I'm convinced that the broad faculty input I sought out (and received) played a huge role in helping me use the mere 7 months or so to maximum effect. And always aim high! -
Maybe I'll get shut out this year but score big next year? You're my inspiration, Swagato.Don't put excessive emphasis on this day. Waitlists can and do convert after the 15th.

Barftown, dude. Barftown.Anyone else wake up this morning feeling like they were going to throw up? -
Yeah, that's cool. I didn't mean to sound like I was starting shit or whatever.I'm just passing on what we were told during the visit, but I got the impression that they're really making a push to cut the tuition payments because its just not competitive compared to other fully-funded programs. I have no idea what the actual amount will be, though. Maybe one of the resident first years around here could weigh in? -
I was told to budget around $1000 per semester for tuition by current grad students, just fyi.

Have any of you waitlisters heard from Dr. Lesser outside of his initial email?
-
Holy smokes, guys-- I just got the good word from UCLA! Can't believe it!
I'll be turning down an offer from UT Austin tonight. Hope that helps someone (I'm looking at you, ErnestPWorrell)! Keep your heads up!
this one goes out to you:

I almost wish I was in this boat... My WL has been relatively silent. I have a compulsion to Email them (with the blatant intention of the "don't forget me" hand flail,") but can't, at this point, think of a reasonable excuse to do so.
I also fear the heart attack asking for actual movement news would induce.
...Does anyone else feel like they're literally going crazy?
yes.

If I get into UT, he's getting into heaven. Duh.May I ask where you're heading?- Two Espressos, movingeast, Datatape and 3 others

Well, guys, it's not looking good for the home team.

I got into Brandeis. Having so many good feelings.
told ya so!
-
Just got rejected from the Wisconsin wait list. Hurts terribly. Trying to remain hopeful knowing that Brandeis was always my favorite of all the schools I applied to (and at least now I feel comfortable saying it without fear that I'm going to jinx myself at Wisconsin!) but it seems even less likely to convert now knowing the size of the program in comparison. Yikes.
dooood.... sorry.

If you're willing to pay, you may consider posting the job on craigslist under "gigs: writing" and request a "native US English Phd student or graduate" in the listing.
-
do UC schools tend to favor admitting their own students more than the average bear? or is that just my imagination?
-
Sending you good vibes for the Brandeis wait-list!I don't think this matters to any regular poster but just in case a lurker cares: declining my Buffalo MA offer today. -
skybythelight: how are you receiving your funding? if it's through a TA or GRA'ship, it's likely finding a job to fund you through the second year will be a piece-o-cake. stressful, delicious cake.
-
Making it official with NYU!
Congrats! If you don't mind me asking, where are declining?

...rent costs like $1200 around campus?
Not exactly, but close. Here's an article I found about rent in Austin this morning that's adding to my general stress level: http://kutnews.org/post/minimum-wage-job-austin-gets-you-two-bedroom-apt-and-111-hour-work-week
For close to campus (walking distance) rent's a little higher ($1,000 depending on where you live.) If you're willing to depend on the unreliable buss service or drive it's closer to $850. Either way, that leaves around $400 for utilities, car insurance, medical bills, phone, internet, books, food, 5% tuition, etc. And I desperately do not want a roommate. I'm sure some people can do it. But. Sigh. Barf.
When I lived in Austin a couple of years ago, rent was a lot less (one bedroom for like $600/700.) I hadn't considered how that might be different now. I really thought that the stipend, while modest, would be doable. Now I'm worried. Also, just generally freaking out.
Not trying to kill anyone's buzz or whatever. Honest. Sorry for irresponsibly freaking out via internet.
