  1. Is anyone else in this position?  I've applied for English Literature and keep reading that people have heard from a bunch of the places I've applied to (UT Austin, Berkeley, NYU, Penn, Columbia, Brown). I haven't heard from any of these places.  Obviously no one on here can change that for me, but am I the only one?

Have you contacted any of these places? You might be waitlisted.

  2. Hi y'all. Just found out I won a prize for the best MA dissertation among the programs in my department (out of 100+ dissertations). Is it appropriate to contact schools with that info?  I'd also let them know about a paper accepted for publication, pending some edits, at an established journal in my sub-field.  Those are neat things, but is it advisable to contact admissions about relevant stuff that's happened since application deadlines passed? Or are admissions peeps so inundated with stuff right now that it'll annoy anyone who bothers to open the email?
Maybe email to ask programs if they would accept an updated CV?
  3. Hey everyone, I have a random question about attending visiting days at schools. Is it ok to bring a spouse/ partner/ friend/ family member, or someone like that? Or is it better to just go alone? I understand that there are some things this individual would not be able to participate in, like individual meetings with POIs. But what about receptions? Sitting in on a class?
I'd go stag for classes and receptions.
  4. If one emails a POI and promptly receives a reply, and if two excerpts from said reply read: "I read your file with real interest" and "Your application is certainly still in consideration"--how does one interpret this, beyond face-value? I'm especially curious as to what this forum thinks about the first comment; the second probably just means exactly what it says.
Looks like somebody wants to go out on a date.
  5. Do it. In an interview for the program I'm currently attending, I told the school directly that they were my first choice. I think it helped me come off as serious and focused. Letting a program know you really want to be there can be especially helpful if your background is interdisciplinary and/or not totally aligned with the program your interviewing for (e.g., if you have a degree in Latin American Studies and your applying for a History program.)

  6. i'm in i'm in i'm in i'm in i'm in i'm in i'm in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

riverside's my no. 1 choice in terms of fit, & at first glance it seems as though the package they're offering trumps what i'd get at davis were my waitlist to convert, i'll probably remove myself from the waitlist so someone else can move up. just gonna wait a little bit for the adrenaline to die down.

*so not able to think straight emoticon*

    get after it!

  7. I'm also ENFP! Sometimes I feel a bit outnumbered (even occasionally misunderstood) by my more introverted colleagues, even though I'm only an E by about 51%. I definitely get my energy from being around people (which I've read is really what is meant by introversion/extroversion). Nevertheless, speaking in front of large groups makes me nervous. I'm still working on the "performative" aspects of teaching; I think I excel one-on-one. And I've always loved meeting new people. Hoping to meet many of you in the future!

51% 'I' here. I'm talkative and an extremely "performative" teacher but love to be alone. Hell is other people.

In my current situation (Masters' level professional program for overachievers), I'm a INTJ in a sea of ESTJs.

  8. Could we get a list together of how many people here are accepted to Pittsburgh, or are waitlisted, but believe that they either will not go, or at least are holding out for other ("better fit") options? My intent is both to try and develop a clearer sense of how likely it may be that I make it off the waitlist, as well as to offer anyone else in a similar position some more information.
Also, if I could get a home address and a list of food allergies for everyone accepted into programs I am waitlisted that'd be great. Thanks!
  9. Speaking of "brazen lack of awareness of class privilege," y'all seem to have some pretty sweet internet access and free time enough to read and participate on forums irrelevant to your jobs (whatever they may be. I assume you work in salt mines, or other arduous manual labors without much associated prestige).

BE AWARE OF THE PRIVILEGE YOU ARE DISPLAYING.

I'm reading this from inside a coal mine.
