  1. As my advisor put it, "this is a lottery you want to play. the payout is well over a quarter million dollars (tuition remission and stipend) and your odds are far better." So, who cares what you paid up front. As long as you get in, you wont care in the least.

    Agreed!!

  2. And I don't see why someone with a strong application would bother applying to dozens of places: I highly doubt this hypothetical person really fits in and likes all of those programs.

Not everyone is a really strong applicant. There are many people that truly aren't sure where they fall, particularly in an increasingly competitive climate.

Even you assume that you will be rejected from more than 50% of your programs.

  3. The programs I'm looking at my quant is good enough.

May I ask why you say this? Have you asked the departments or seen something on their website?

Honestly, a 153Q is low for someone in the Humanities. I'm not trying to crush you, but I want to be honest, since you are asking. I have to imagine this score is extremely low for any programs in Mathematics, and will probably keep you out.

The GRE isn't always the most important part, but it is still important, and Mathematics programs will look at your GRE far more seriously than other fields.

  4. I think it's up to where you see yourself. What fits best. For me, I'm not too concerned about friends, for example.

The only con you've listed for the smaller program might not even be accurate. And depending on who you want to work with at the larger program, you might receive just as much attention.

The competitive nature of a program should always be a factor. Are you competitive? Can you compete for opportunities? Also keep in mind that if you are competitive then it might benefit you being in larger, more competitive program.

Is there a difference in course offerings?

    It's all about fit.

  5. Is this a one year taught course?

It would also depend on your plans after the MLitt. St. Andrews is a great school. Would you continue there? Continue back in the States? Seek employment?

Certainly a MLitt isn't a MPhil. I would think it's value would depend on who's judging it.

  6. Also, does anyone think a production background will hurt my chances of getting in?

Do you have any courses in general film studies? Speak any additional languages? Also, it'd be best to submit a (strong) writing sample that displays an aptitude for film analysis.

I was also looking into a few film programs.

  7. I could probably take the test again in March for certain Universities but they are not my first choice.

Everything on my application is great except for the GRE. I have a great GPA, LOR, SOP and I have overcome many educational disadvantages like bad urban schooling and coming from a low income family. In general, all things considered : what do you guys think?

I think you'll absolutely want to bring those scores up, especially the Quant. Keep in mind, everyone has a "great GPA, LOR, and SOP." You don't want that silly GRE keeping you from remaining competitive.

BTW, props for pushing through your difficulties!!

  8. I am really concerned about this.  On MWF, I have a class where I'm not allowed to miss more than 3 classes.  On T,R I have a class where i cannot miss more than 2 classes.  I only have a possibility of 3 interviews to go to, but am still very concerned.  Any advice?

Have you tried to talk to the prof and exlain your situation? Ask for a possiblity to make up the time missed?
