  1. Ahh, I definitely used to buy by-the-bottle when I was living in CA/NV last summer! The one in Carson City was awesome. I tried the "Icky" Ichthyosaur IPA from Great Basin Brewing Co., which was semi-local & pretty tasty. Most of the names of the beers I tried there are escaping me now.. alas. At a TJ's at home in NYC, I also found Loose Cannon by Heavy Seas Brewing Co., a triple-hopped American IPA that's become one of my favorite beers. Although it's not through TJ's, one of my favorite restaurants, Cascabel Taqueria, has a really solid beer menu. They're how I found out about Flower Power, an IPA from Ithaca Brewing Co., & Sweet Action, a cream ale from Six Point Brewing Co. Flower Power is another favorite of mine; not too hoppy, lots of subtle floral tastes going on without tasting like a hop nugget or a mouthful of deodorant. Also, there are two other restaurants back home with amazing beer selections: Hospoda & B. Café, which are Czech & Belgian food places, respectively, that take serious pride in their beer lists (hyperlinked for your pleasure). Hospoda actually brews their own pilsners in 4 varieties: sweet, slice, creme, & neat. Not surprisingly, the Consulate General of the Czech Republic is a couple doors down.. fancy comfort food, I guess! Either way, the lists are pretty substantial, but they're a really great go-to guide for tasty beers.
  2. If anyone is waiting to hear from CUNY (Hunter): I got my decision from them last year on the 22nd, which, like today, was the second-to-late Friday of March. I got an email telling me a decision was available via the ApplyYourself portal. I can't say 100% whether you'll be hearing today, but if you haven't yet, I bet you will be soon! Seems like they usually send out archie decisions in mid- to late March.
  3. Ha! Hardly - I think archaeologists just tend to be oddballs with a penchant for the off-beat. As you will note, DigDeep has accumulated some seriously BAMF-status interests. Just don't pick on us, & we won't come running after you with homemade atlatls made of obsidian & rabbit sinew.
  4. High fives all around! Dirt is just soil that you can't be bothered analyzing. I'm in mortuary archaeology, so I've picked up funny words from forensic folks, first responders, & archaeologists. I think morgue techs, paramedics + EMTs, & archaeologists have great senses of humor that help us all get through long, taxing days. I'm biased, of course, but here are some of my favorites that I've heard over the years. Warning: some of these are totally gross. Gravy: the byproducts of putrefaction. Not the kind of stuff you want to put on your dinner. Soap: adipocere; grave wax. Too much of the worst word in the world: moist. Soup, smoothie: a messy scene that will give you a case of the Mondays for the rest of the week. Black book, diary: field journals. Makes serious field work feel more like an episode of a terrible "reality"/dramatic TV show. Cans, buttons, charred wood, broken plates, glass bottles: to an archaeologist, namely an historic one, these are some of the most exciting things ever. Seriously. If you want to get us all hot & bothered, start talking lead solder vents & solarized glass. Ritual: when in doubt or utterly confused, this is what any object, set of remains, or feature is until you get more funding so you can actually figure it out. Dinosaurs, aliens: NO.
  5. On a very superficial level, having only looked into his bio & scanned the article: all this is very easy to for a very young & charismatic professor who appears to be tenured himself. I'll revisit this thread when I've given it a thorough read & more thought! But, in general, this reminds me of a trend that I have a particular distaste for in anthropology: as far as I can tell, everyone — especially seasoned researchers — loves to run their jaw about how we need to stop writing & speaking in "Academese," make our work relevant to & digestible for the public, stay deeply involved with & committed to the places & people we study, & so on... yet, so far, it's mostly been a case of "do as I say, not as I do," & in turn, that perpetuates our ridiculous system of expectations for anthropologists. I mean, really, you expect me to listen to your complaints about the "opaqueness" of anthropology when you used "somniforous" more than once in your article? Yeah, no. Go away. :| Anyway, to bring that full circle, there seems to be a good deal of "do as I say"-type academia related pieces floating around; lots of hypocrisy on the part of people whose careers are very secure, but that's not to say they haven't truly earned the ability to say these sorts of things. I just wish there were more progressive academic leadership by action.
  6. My people! Haha! My grandma roasts them with butter perfectly. Noms. That reminds me, I really like so-called "taboo" foods: eyeballs, hearts, intestines, brains, bugs.. you name it. I normally don't eat meat besides fish but I'll try almost anything once, especially if I can learn how to process it. Elk & deer hearts are some of my favorite foods, definitely in my Top 5.
  7. I agree with Vene: it's definitely worth the time; the sooner you figure out what's going on, the better! There are many stereotypes about all kinds of learning disorders, from ADD to dyslexia, so I hope you can find someone who doesn't dismiss your concerns simply because you have a strong academic record. Regardless of the outcome of meeting with a professional (therapist or otherwise) & depending on your relationship with your advisor, it may be worthwhile to just let them know that you're actively seeking out answers to these questions as well as solutions. If you think they'd be understanding, make it clear that it's not an excuse, but a true source of struggle that you're proactively trying to manage & comprehend. Also, as an aside: I don't have ADD, but I've always found that while I can handle a large workload no problem-o, the second I feel stressed because I'm putting pressure on myself &/or I feel (or know) that others have high expectations for me.. I crash & burn. I struggle to maintain my focus & motivation when I'm that stressed; I can hardly read a single sentence without spacing out or skipping around. I'm not saying that's your root issue — it sounds like you're really self-aware & know this is a chronic problem — but, speaking from personal experience, if you do see a professional, it's really important to let them know your sources of stress. If nothing else, they can tackle whatever your root cause may be while also helping you manage that stress & understand how it affects you.
  8. Ooh, I'd like to add a +1 for nannying! I think living in-residence as a nanny would be hard, but many of my classmates have had really great experiences, both at my program & others, with babysitting regularly. If it's something you're interested &/or experienced in, I would recommend looking into it, based on secondhand info. I've also heard great things about university library jobs in general!
  9. Depends on the nature of the job, your pay, & time commitment. Last semester was my first, & I was a for-credit (unfunded) TA, had a full course load, & had a part-time food service job about 12-15 hours weekly. My supervisors were disorganized & inattentive to employee concerns, employees were paid minimum wage & we didn't have a tip jar, & our schedules changed every. Single. Week. I was constantly stressed & frustrated, & had virtually no social life because I was totally burnt out every weekend from job-work & school-work together. It was very emotionally & mentally unhealthy, so I quit at the end of the semester. It simply wasn't worth the spotty minimum wage & stress. So, for me, it wasn't an issue of time or time management; rather, it was an issue of.. well, just about everything else. That said, I'm sure that a job with better supervisors, a regular schedule, & better pay would be feasible, as long as you're a hard work in all senses & a good time manager. However, I would go into it making it clear that you're a student first, & that there would be a chance that you'd have to change your schedule or leave in the future in order to balance & prioritize academic things.
  10. I did a sort of "staggered" move: my S.O. works from the start of March through late October, so he joined me here when he was off for the season. Prior to that, we'd informally lived together; I all but moved out of my work-provided barracks, & moved in with him in his apartment. To put it very simply, I think living together was one of the absolute best things I could've done. His seasonal income is very comfortable, & because neither of us have changed our state residency, & the nature of his field of work, he received some unemployment that covered all of his expenses plus our groceries. Having a lot of time on his hands made him a bit homesick, I think, but he always did the laundry & cleaned the room, helped out with meals, & so on. We both really like it here, though, so he got to experience something new & enjoyable, & I had — & still have! — an amazing support system. Like any other relationship, there are always small bumps (car problems, budgeting, "inertia"), but it's never been a problem to maintain. I think it's actually helped us grow individually & as a couple; it's made me far less worried than I'd normally about him having to move back for work again (we'll be a few states away for a good number of months now). As others have said, finding a job is crucial for your S.O. Mine has been in his field of work for about a decade, so he's used to the cycle of on season wage/overtime to off season unemployment/nothing-doing & back again. He's not the best with money, but he always has enough to get by, & he is more than happy to kick up his heels for a few months. If there's any downtime before your S.O. is employed, I would suggest going the extra mile to make sure they've got something to do that they enjoy to fill the time, rather than just focusing all their energy on moving, chores, & applying for jobs. Also, in my case, it was a pretty big life change for me: new program, new to grad school, new city full of strangers. Ditto my S.O. So, basically, it was a bit of an adjustment, although not a particularly stressful one or a big to-do. Our relationship grew & matured a bit, I guess, but all for the better. So, to recap: finances are a big deal, adjusting to new schedules (more time or less/no time) is important, & don't go in with the expectation that everything will be exactly the same as it's been (although it can rekindle a sort of "honeymoon phase" for sure!).
  11. Fish sandwiches from McDonald's. Mmmm. I can't (or won't) eat most fast food, but.. dang, these were my staple on the way to & from snowboarding last year. Also, really whiny, loud, & nasal-y pop punk.

I always stay in business casual attire through an entire conference; the closest I'd get to jeans would be black or charcoal, denim or well made cotton blend, which is about 50% of the pants I own. Otherwise, I try to stick to casual dresses, since I struggle with finding flattering "business attire"-type skirts. Cardigans, blazers, & scarves are great! Ditto comfy flats! I made the mistake of wearing heels on a long conference day one... never again.
  16. When it's warm out, keep an eye open for beardy dudes eating ice cream, especially soft serve. It's a field day of dribbles & hilarity! We were finding rainbow sprinkles in my S.O.'s beard the rest of the day..

Hmm, I think I have a very even tie between 3 things: constant money worries (although I'll have fewer next year! hooray!), the "two body" problem (not living with my S.O. most of the year), & dealing with entitled/rude/uninterested undergrads when TAing. Grad school itself is great most of the time, but these 3 things weigh on my mind & emotions very heavily. I'm not looking forward to adjusting to a new, likely more expensive living situation without my S.O., while waist deep in thesis stuff & TAing once again next fall. :/ Edit: I am the worst kind of indecisive! Picking one is hard, but I think money worries are at the top of the list.
  18. This makes 100% of the drinking establishments my S.O. has eaten food in a dive bar, if we're counting his post-beard mustache days. To be fair, we're not classy people.. but I had a good chuckle. Also: ...when getting in a fight doesn't immediately get you 86'd. ...you walk out smelling of musky cologne or other patrons' cigarettes, despite having walked in unscented. ..."brain & eggs" is not only an item on the menu, but one of the most popular. ...there are no actual lamps on after 9:00 pm, just neon signs & backlit advertisements. ...the bathrooms have "grow-up quarter machines" with condoms, lubricant, perfume, & flavored breath drops.
  19. I don't believe professors are directly compensated for advising or sitting on a committee — in my program, at least — but I'm sure it pays off indirectly in terms of seeking promotions or tenure.
  20. I'm in an M.A. program, & I was diagnosed with MDD & anxiety about 10 years ago. As I said in a different but similar thread, "I would neither be alive nor able to even get out of bed, feed myself, or sleep normally without the anti-depressants (and other medications) I'm taking." I see a therapist & a psychiatrist through my school's health center. In general, they're very helpful, although there's only one staff psychiatrist who's part-time.. on a campus of 10,000+. I've found that the therapist is really helpful, because they've got a lot of experience working with students in all courses of all ages & walks of life. Also, appointments are very affordable, & I can schedule appointments as I see fit, whereas private practitioners are often more expensive & want you to stick to a certain appointment schedule. If your school has student mental health services, I would highly recommend at least giving them a try.

  23. Great minds think alike! I've got Irish roots on one side, too: fairly recent additions to the US, so it's not hard to figure out where "home" was. Unfortunately, I have a feeling my "ancestors' land" & history is less than illustrious, but it'd be irreverent of me not to follow in their (intoxicated) footsteps if I visited, I suppose.
  24. My S.O. hasn't traveled outside the US, & he's really into brewing beer. I'd like to do a "beer-hopping" backpacking tour of Europe, after our work seasons are over so we've got time & money to spare. He could experience international travel & learn a lot about brewing, & I'd have a chance to see places I haven't been (Germany, Belgium, Czech Rep., Ireland, Netherlands). I love traveling, he loves brewing, we love adventures. Also, I mean, hey— any excuse to drink tasty beers & eat tasty cheese, right?
