  1. Hello Everyone. I am very anxious about this application cycle (as I'm sure we all are). This is my second year applying to SLP Masters programs and this time around I am looking to do anything to help sway the admissions team. Last year I only applied to one graduate program (ISU- where I attended my post-bacc program) and this year I am applying to three programs with hope that my chances will increase. I live out in the middle of nowhere so the three programs I am applying to are all distance programs. There is a university branch of one SLP program that is about 5 hours away from me. I was thinking I could call one of my old professors to ask if she would be willing to give me a tour of the campus and allow me to volunteer in the speech & hearing clinic for a few days. My goal would be to network and make a good impression. (Oh, I should mention that none of the programs I applied to hold interviews or open house events prior to their decision) Is this a good idea? Do you think it would help me get into their grad program? Decisions don't go out until April so I feel like I should get up and do something. Meet people in person...how else can I show them that I am devoted to this career? Thank you for reading the ramblings of someone who should have gone to bed hours ago. lol
  2. Great idea for a thread. =) I am also applying to "less competitive" programs. This is my second year applying. Last year I only applied to one program (Idaho State University- where I completed my post-bacc). I was waitlisted and ultimately not accepted so I am crossing my fingers for this year. I am limited to where I can apply because I have a family and we live in a little town far away from any SLP programs. I am applying to the distance programs at all three universities listed below. I'm really nervous about not getting accepted. My GRE scores are certainly not impressive so I am hoping my grades, SOP, and volunteer experience will impress the admissions committee. Good luck to everyone!
  3. I applied to the WKU online program as well. **fingers crossed**
  4. I only applied to three schools, 2 of which are through CSDCAS. I stupidly submitted my application on January 8th and my deadline is Feb 1st. As of right now it says they are verifying applications submitted Dec 31st. If I am lucky, my application will be verified LAST MINUTE! Yikes. I shouldn't have spent so long editing and re-writing my SOP!
  5. This is my second year applying. I am limited to where I can apply due to my location so I am applying strictly to distance programs. Last year I only applied to one graduate program. I was waitlisted and ultimately not accepted. This year I am applying to three programs. I just hope it is enough to get me in at least one program! **Fingers Crossed** I was going to re-take my GRE, but I figured my time was better spent improving my sop. I'm worried about my lor's. I was able to get two amazing SLPs to write me letters, but I only have one professor writing the last letter. I wish I had more academic references, but I will have to take my chances and see what happens. Good luck to everyone this year!
  6. Hello everyone! I'm looking for some feedback on my SOP. I am applying to only two speech-language pathology programs and I would love some feedback! I'm willing to swap essays as well! Thank you!
  7. I'm in the same boat. I only applied to one university (Limited in options because I have a family of my own and we are grounded in a little town due to my SO's job) and I am still waiting to hear a decision. I figure it is not looking too good since people on the grad cafe admissions board are stating their acceptances to the school. My GRE's were horrid! I basically just showed up to the exam. I didn't study at all which was a mistake. My GRE scores are 149v 142q 4.5w. My out of field gpa is low, 3.0 in neuroscience, but my post-bacc gpa is currently a 3.9. My LORs were from two professors (that I didn't know all that well), an SLP I volunteered with, and a director of a private school where I volunteer. My SOP probably could have used some work. I would love some ideas on how to improve the SOP for next year. Assuming I am not accepted to the program this year I will re apply to a total of 3 schools the next time around. The only problem is that I would have to commute an hour each day to get to the other two grad schools if I am accepted. I will post my statment of purpose once I find it on my computer. Does anyone have any ideas for me to prepare for reapplying? Obviously, I intend to re take the GRE. Currently I volunteer with an SLP 3 days a week for 2 hours each day. Should I try to do more volunteer work? Additionally, I work at a daycare part time and volunteer with a provate school. What else can I do?
  8. I only applied to one SLP grad school and the limit was 500-600 words.
  9. I live in Pullman, WA and went to WSU for my undergrad (Neuroscience) if you have any questions let me know. I can't really answer your questions because I don't know anything about Marquette.
  10. I think an important factor to consider is what life will be like for you after graduate school. How is the job outlook? Pay? Will choosing Berkley impact your chances of becoming a good candidate for a job compared to UW or Harvard?
  11. I can't answer your question, but I thought I'd write to say that we are almost in the same boat. I applied to only 1 school for MS in Speech Language Pathology and I am waiting to hear back. I applied to the distance program and since I have a family as well I can't just apply anywhere. Good luck to you! I hope we both get in =) I figure if I don't get accepted I will work on increasing my volunteer hours and apply again next year.
  12. I get my UG (neuroscience) from WSU and I know a lot of the psych professors. Who are you hoping to work with?
  13. I only applied to one graduate school as I am unable to move for graduate studies. Since I've only applied to one school with an avereage GRE score I'm thinking there is a good chance I wont get in. I am working on a post-baccalaureate in SLP right now and while my current GPA is a 3.7, my undergraduate GPA was a 3.0 in neuroscience. My backup plan is to do a full year of volunteer work at a local hospital, re-take the GRE, and reapply next year. I could apply to more graduate schools next year, but I would have over an hour commute each way to attend anywhere else. I'm just crossing my fingers that I get accepted this year.
