Deferring a year, but going to Teachers College.

Since they're doing this in waves, I wonder how the order is selected? I filled out my FAFSA almost two months ago at this point, and even double checked to make sure I had it sent to TC. I've checked my spam folders too, and nada. It's looking more and more like it'll be TC for me, which I'm excited about, but I'm getting a little anxious that we're rolling into the beginning of April and I've still not gotten an award letter. Glad to know I'm not the only one in this position!

Wow, excellent advice soapwater! I am leaning more and more towards TC... I don't think I'll be able to make it for the admitted student days, but if I end up there in August it'd be cool to meet up with some of you! I like beer any day of the week.

Hey all, Just a quick question to anyone here who might be enrolled in the AL program at TC. I was accepted to the MA program, and wonder what the differences in scheduling are. I know most classes are at night because of student teaching during the day, however, is it only the Ed.M students who do practicum teaching? As an MA, I see one practicum class in the requirements, but no other mention of regular student teaching to be done during my time there. Any insight on this would be fabulous and much appreciated. Sending many good vibes to my fellow linguists.

I was accepted Feb 20th, but still no award letter. I'm afraid I'm going to get the loans only letter, which is a sad, sad thing because, like many of you, I am unwilling to go $100k+ in debt, even for Columbia.

Also got my UMD rejection this AM, and I don't feel nearly as bad about it as I thought I would. Definitely better than not knowing until April, as it seems that has happened to people before according to the results page! Kudos to those who are getting acceptances.

I've only heard from 1/4 of my schools, and won't know anything about financial aid until mid-March. As for the other three, I'm trying not to let myself get pessimistic. My best friend and I have agreed that if it doesn't work out this year, we're job hunting and moving in together. It's been really helpful to look at job/apartment listings in the event that things don't work out.
-
I am still waiting too... More than likely for a rejection, but you never know! I called about a week ago and was told no decisions had been made and that they probably wouldn't be sending anything out until the end of March.
-
No worries, only one of my schools has sent out decisions. Still waiting on the other three that had later deadlines.

This is also a bit of a concern of mine. I am also a bit iffy because I have a small dog, and while pets are allowed in family housing, from what I can gather they are not allowed in single student housing. My other choices are in cities where I wouldn't need to live on campus, but given the price of living in NYC, living on campus for me would almost definitely be a necessity.
-
I have to say, I'm surprised at some of the times between deadlines and decisions. Columbia's deadline was January 15th and I heard from them on February 20th - University of Pittsburgh was December 15th, and when I called I was told that no decisions have gone out yet for the MA candidates! Wah.

Hi there, I just got accepted to Teachers College - financial aid will play a big role in deciding if I actually go, but it's still a great feeling.
-
Not that I'm pushy or anything... but is there any chance the other admitted student to Teachers College for Applied Linguistics wants to squeal excitedly with me?
-
I got into Teachers College at Columbia and am looking into housing. I would normally opt for graduate housing, but I have a small dog, and as far as I know, animals are only allowed in family housing. It kills me because I know I'll end up shelling out a lot more money for a place off-campus. That said - bringing a small dog to NYC. Good idea? Bad idea? I've visited the city on a few occasions, but am not sure what the vibe is there towards animals. It's very important to me that my girl would have a safe and happy time there while I worked towards my degree. Any thoughts?

Definitely starting to lose it. All of my programs had very early deadlines, and based on the results page, no one else has heard back from them either. I called one of them to double check today, and was told decisions will be available at the END of March at the earliest. I need a hobby.

Exactly the reason I didn't apply to XXXXX university. Their linguistics department is great, but I emailed a professor whose work I was interested in, and didn't receive so much as an acknowledgment of my message. I understand they're busy, but I didn't write said person a novel - just a very short two paragraph message expressing interest and asking a couple of questions. After that I called the department to introduce myself and ask a couple of questions, and the immediate response of the person on the phone was, "Oh... okaaaaaaaay." They were clearly too busy to invest time in the very people who were giving them $80 for a chance to maybe have their applications considered for a few minutes. I am all about giving prestigious programs a shot, but I'm also not willing to crawl across hot coals for a program that treats me like I'm the lucky one for being there. They're lucky to have any of us too.

Glad to hear I am not the only one with an "incomplete" UMD application. I also called the department, and they verified that they just don't update the online statuses for hard copies received in the mail. Makes me doubt that we'll be hearing anything electronically...
-
Congrats to those of you who've gotten positive responses from your schools!! I am still waiting to hear from mine... They claim decisions come in March, but according to the results page, they've all come during the last two weeks of February. I am obsessing big time and refreshing all of my applications and the results page every five minutes, even though it's Saturday. Sigh.
-
Arggggghhhh yeah, that makes the most sense. My heart stopped when I saw an email with the name of the school on it. Guess the waiting game continues.
-
I apologize if this has already been answered elsewhere... I am new to these forums and this is my first time applying to grad schools. I haven't heard anything from any of my schools yet, but I got an email from my top choice telling me to fill out fafsa if I am interested in financial aid for the 2013-2014 school year. Is this just a standard thing most schools do to make sure everyone has their ducks in a row in the event they are accepted? I don't want to get my hopes up over an email all of the other applicants probably got too. Any insight on this would be very much appreciated!
-
One of my programs has sent notifications between the 10th-15th of February in years past... Out of curiosity I called and was told it might be the beginning of March before anything comes out this time.

does anyone feel like they are putting their lives on hold?
lmt007 replied to tiarabun's topic in Waiting it Out
I am in a similar boat. I just returned from living abroad for two years, and am in a holding pattern while I wait for news. The problem is my family lives in a small town, so the economy is particularly rough here. I have applied to dozens of secretary/assistant positions, and keep losing out to people with MA's because the job market here is so crap that people with BA's are having to step down a notch from the types of jobs they'd normally accept. If I don't get in anywhere, my plan is to cast my net nationwide for jobs and move wherever I can find work - but man, it is discouraging to be twiddling my thumbs in the meantime! -
Buahahaha THANKS, OBAMA. Anyone else seen that video? I have this paranoid visual of someone accidentally dropping my application down an elevator shaft and then shrugging it off like "eh..." Given that everything is electronic now, I don't know why this idea haunts me.
