  1. How'd you feel about the college years? I only just got into Buffy last year, and I watched the high school years over and over and over again before I could move on. I gave up after Dawn.
  2. I haven't started my program yet, but I adjunct 6 classes per semester (3 during summers), which would tend to keep a person pretty busy. I volunteer regularly with the dogs at our local city animal shelter.
  3. This made me laugh out loud!
  4. Oh god, yes. It's getting sad. Right now I'm at the point where I try to go as long as I can without bringing up Sherlock Holmes in normal conversations. But one of the other teachers I work with is as crazy for Holmes as me, and we feed off each other! We watch the BBC series, read fanfic (a GREAT distraction while waiting for program notifications), just watched The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes the other day, and now we're into the Jeremy Brett series. Oh, and my husband and I pop in the Robert Downey Jr films on a rainy day (like today). I read all the stories over winter break, am in the middle of writing three academic articles on Sherlock Holmes novels and adaptations, my students just read A Study In Scarlet and wrote papers over it, and I'm going to the Sherlock Holmes conference at the University of Minnesota in August. So yes. Totally sherlocked!
  5. I just straight up squealed at your username.
  6. I'm curious to hear if anyone else is going to the Midwest Victorian Studies Association conference in Cleveland next weekend?
  7. We both already have MAs and we're going in to the PhD. and thanks! You should totally apply. Don't be scared!
  8. What about the thread scares you? LSU asked for such a short SOP that I didn't include references to any specific professors or anything specific about the department. I wrote and sent this application last in the cycle, and by that time I just wanted to write something generic and be done with it. My husband, however, did reference specific professors, but neither of us contacted anyone beforehand. We were both accepted in the first round of admissions.
  9. Congrats! and Yay us for being their top people! Even if we are (or possibly, in your case) turning them down. . .
  10. Agreed. I have a friend at GSU who tells me horror stories about her workload. . . not pretty.
  11. Just heard from the DGS at Georgia State and wanted to update people who are interested in that program. According to his email, I am one of a very few number of people being offered funding. The funding package looks pretty similar to what is posted in the funding thread. I'm turning to down, so I hope that helps someone on here! I'd be really interested to hear who accepts GSU, so let me know!
  12. That's great! I'm glad to hear you like it. I'm originally from Kansas - I love Lawrence. Actually I love the entire midwest - I'm sure you'll love it there.
  13. Congrats! Do you currently live in Kansas?
  14. I'm not looking forward to the changes that come with starting a new program. At my current university, we are allowed to create our own curriculum for Writing 1 and 2. I've taught novels for 5 years.
  15. Oh, perhaps he misread the email! He declined, in any case. I agree with everyone else on here, I wouldn't take it without funding.
  16. Yeah, go for a realtor! When we visited Baton Rouge, we spoke to a few people who had done it. They also moved from out of town: set up times to see a few places and signed a lease that day, the realtor takes care of everything. If anyone else is moving to Baton Rouge, I've got some numbers.
  17. My husband was also accepted to MSU. He received an email the other day specifying that not one single incoming student will receive funding this year. Hope this helps! Maybe you could defer and see what their funding situation is next year and apply again to other programs, as well?
  18. We're using a realtor - apparently they do rentals. We have 3 dogs. Glad we're only moving ten hours away! Though forced to go through Dallas traffic, what a nightmare.
  19. Oklahoma and Texas are not so bad. I wouldn't trade my life here for anything. Looking forward to Baton Rouge, too.
  20. The campus is beautiful! My husband and I signed our contracts while we were there. I'll definitely ask you about whatever neighborhoods we look at... I'm concerned about finding a good place to live that will accept three dogs.
  21. Mercyhurst2010, do you think religion and literature has staying power?
  22. I spend a lot of time with my dogs and I care about them, which makes me especially interested in animal studies. I don't see my interest in either my animals or animal studies as pointless.
