  1. Thanks! And oh really, re: living in Atlanta? I have never as an adult lived outside of Oklahoma, so I have no concept of expense in other states. As you can imagine, it is cheap to live here. My husband says Atlanta is expensive, but if I choose to accept, my friend might be able to hook me up with a roommate in the program (hubby and I have to live apart during school since we have been accepted to radically different locations). I'm still on the waiting list at Minnesota and would prefer if that worked out. But it feels great to get an actual acceptance!
  2. For those of you waiting on Georgia State: I just found out I have been accepted from a friend who is a PhD student there already. She went to ask the secretary about my application after she talked to the department chair and was told she could tell me I have been accepted. They're trying to "streamline" their process of notifying applicants (which, if you look at the results board, I think they need to!) and everyone should know in the next few weeks. I'll believe it when I see it, though--my friend was not even waitlisted and she was informed in the 11th hour! Oh, and they're waiting to hear back on funding for me. I will tell you all that the funding is not great. I have always been really excited about this program because I spoke to someone who is willing to work with me on Anglo-Jewish lit. But the funding is dismal!!
  3. why would a dress and tights be inappropriate?
  4. I find Norman to be really boring and prefer Oklahoma City. I can tell you anything you want to know about good places to live in OKC if you choose to live here and commute to Norman. A lot of people do it. The vegan restaurant JUST closed down, but Asian, Middle Eastern restaurants work - my husband and I are OKC vegans. Whole Foods, of course, and we shop at Sprouts a lot, too. I think Sprouts is just a midwest thing - it is like Whole Foods, but cheaper. Lived in Oklahoma almost my entire life, so ask away!
  5. Dr. Nancy on NW 23rd street in OKC. City Animal Hospital. WORTH the drive from Norman. She's the best. Prices are the most reasonable in the metro, and she works for rescues, too.
  6. Veganism isn't a "diet." Why can't we make a connection between fat studies and the way people eat?
  7. bfat, that is really admirable. I think even little changes make a world of difference.
  8. Making the switch to vegan cosmetics is a bitch, for sure, but there are some decent brands out there. For cheese, Daiya, all the way. It is a godsend! It is shredded, and isn't any more expensive than dairy shredded cheese. There are some sliced cheeses I would suggest as well... I think one brand is simply called "vegan slices," which I know sounds dubious, but is really pretty good. I haven't branched out into blocks of nondairy cheese, but seriously, Daiya! It melts, which is a plus. Oh, I was so excited about nondairy cheese that I forgot to say I think easing yourself into it is a great idea! I don't know anyone who went vegan overnight. I didn't.
  9. I have met people in the world who do not believe in the validity of animal activism, but never academics who are offended by animal studies.
  10. Do it! Take the plunge! I think I saw that you are a fellow animal studies person... I don't think I could be as committed to animal studies if I didn't have my real life animal welfare activities behind me. I guess it enhances my academic interests. Cheese is something you just can't replicate, but if in the early days you think you might break down, there are some tolerable cheese substitutes out there.
  11. Josh, I respectfully/completely disagree with your last post. I am an adjunct--if you know how little adjuncts are paid, you'll understand that I make virtually no money, and live in a tiny, cramped apartment. I don't buy anything in bulk and I don't have a lot of space, but I am a committed vegan. It is possible!
  12. Ever thought about going vegan? Dairy is evil!
  13. Yes, it is stressful, but I have tried not to let it destroy me. He actually got into Nebraska, so we (or at least him) will be moving there. I'm the one who got him into English in the first place. When we started dating, he was a philosopher. So hopefully your situation will work out since you guys do different things! Have any of your prospects overlapped yet? Do you still have some options that might? I live in Oklahoma City. I did my BA at Oklahoma State in Stillwater and my MA at the Univ. of Central OK in Edmond. I am trapped in adjunct hell at a few schools in the metro. I assumed you must be in Tulsa -- I'm not necessarily the queen of central Oklahoma or anything, but I thought I knew all the Victorianists in the area! Do you like Tulsa? Do you ever get over to OKC?
  14. Agreed! Maybe I will see you there, Datatape! We're not in the same field, so hopefully we both have a good shot.
  15. Yes. I empathize with you on all that. My husband has two funded offers and and I am currently only waitlisted at one program. (I was rejected from one program he applied to and was rejected from a school in the area of the other he got in to) We have already acknowledged that we will most likely live separately. IF I get in somewhere, I will only pick a place close to his school. If it is too far away, I am turning it down. May or may not ever apply again. I'm also up for a tenure track teaching job in our home state. So if I get it I may just stay here and wait until he is finished. It IS hard on a relationship. I get mad every time he gets good news because I don't have any. I realize it is unfair... but whatever, this is a stressful process! I don't have any advice for you! I guess it depends on your unique situation. I just love being a teacher, and have already acknowledged that I may die an adjunct. So if my husband has a chance at an actual job, I'm willing to give up my phd dreams for that. Ahhhhh!!! You are from OK, too????? And a Victorianist?? Me too! Why aren't we friends?!
  16. Regarding GSU- they did not receive as many applications as they want this year.
  17. Regarding GSU - I applied before the deadline and am very interested in the program. A friend of mine is a phd student there currently and has a friend who works with the applications, and I asked her to ask him what is up with the extension!
  18. Unless your cat is really fashionable, I say yes.
  19. WHATEVER!!!! There is NOTHING wrong with or embarrassing about being interested in fashion. Period. Don't be ashamed. Anyone who judges you for it is probably really boring.
  20. Thanks for the news on Iowa! That makes me feel better (especially now that you are turning them down! hah!), and like someone else pointed out, they have notified later in the year usually. My boss at my university here (Got his PhD from KU--recent PhD), said he notified Iowa he wanted to be taken off their list around this time that particular year, and they discouraged him from doing so since they usually get around to their decisions later than other programs. But he got in at KU with funding, and he wanted it, so he did have himself taken out of the running at Iowa.
  21. I really want Iowa! Don't know about "deserve," but want, definitely!
  22. Okay! Let us know if you hear anything relevant!
  23. Have we all given up on Iowa? I didn't get that memo. Am I crazy to still have hope? I noticed that they accepted a few people already, but nothing since, no waitlists. Judging from previous years, they get back to people much later than they did this year, and there were several waitlists. Any insight, dmmar?
  24. Obviously you don't spend all your free time obsessively looking at all things Sherlock Holmes on the web, so it is understandable. They're always turning down my ILL requests for stuff, so I definitely know them. https://www.lib.umn.edu/scrbm/holmes
