Chris: http://www.thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=delaware+chemical They've been accepting people since December, and rejected someone as recently as yesterday... Probably a good idea to be exploring the other options :/ I too was left in the lurch by some programs, hearing neither yay nor nay. Well wishes for your future endeavors

Reatha, you sound like somebody who's got their shit together- Good for you! It's quite admirable to be able to make the sacrifices necessary to get what you want and need instead of just succumbing to the present offer. I wish you well.
-
Uiowk573, thanks for the info! Were you one of the prospectives? Where else did you apply/get admitted? I've all but decided to simply focus on my two acceptances and quit worrying about the others.
-
Weymiller, any update on your situation? A different prof from the same department as the one who is MIA actually set up a phone call and followed through with me. It was most helpful, and I learned quite a bit about the program. I even feel better about the prospect of choosing that school than I did before. Good advice, Zapster

2013 Bump! I've learned a lot from reading just these 3 pages of info- Anybody else considering UC Riverside for Fall 2013?
-
Not purely environmental, but I've been accepted to Washington U in St Louis (Energy, Environmental, and Chemical) and also to U Cal Riverside (Chemical and Environmental). Where all did you apply?
-
Biohopeful, my personal email is also linked thru my phone- and everytime I get a junk mail I start cursing my phone... Katieliz, I have the same thing- 5 schools have notified others of acceptances and I haven't heard jack- it's all I can do to keep from calling the departments...
-
I'm to the point where I send e-mails to my personal account from my work account and back just to make sure my personal account is still functioning properly... I think you can say I've crossed the line...

Won't they pay for the trip? Is there something else that makes you not want to go? I don't know if it's rude to not visit; the visits are usually the school's chance to try and woo you into accepting their offer. But it sounds like they don't need to do that if you've already made up your mind. But as far as looking for a place to live and getting a feel for the department, faculty, and other students, nothing will beat a paid-for recruiting visit.

Well disregard my reply to your original thread... Turns out you've already found this one! Scroll through the thread, checking to see when others heard their decisions from schools that you also applied to. That's the only advice I can offer
-
CL09, check this thread: You can find which schools have already sent out acceptances/denials, compare your 10 schools to what you find, and hopefully find some peace of mind. Hang in there... If a school has sent out denials, and you haven't heard from them, you could at least be on an informal wait list. Let us know what you find out by posting in that aforementioned thread. Cheers

Now let me ask you all this: My POIs from the two schools I'm considering right now have both suggested we have a phone conversation before I visit the campus. The visits will take place in the next 2-4 weeks. What are some things that I should ask/talk about during these phone calls that can help me be more productive during my visits? To go along with Devil7, one of these POIs initiated this phone call idea, then hasn't replied to my almost immediate response in over 2 months... wtf? I can understand holidays/busy times, but let's get real... I followed up from my original reply 5 weeks after he suggested the phone call (Dec. 7), and it's been another 3 weeks since that time. I want to believe that once accepted, it is us as the students who have the power, since the schools should be trying to get us to accept their offer, but this guy sure is making it tough. I don't want to come across as needy or demanding, but this is really doing a number on me. Thanks for the wisdom!

Devil7, this is one of the most frustrating parts of this experience I have had thus far. This has happened to me with 3 different professors, and for each one I generally only waited a week before I followed up. Sometimes they respond to the follow-up immediately, as if they had simply forgotten about the previous message. Other times, they acknowledge the previous message and apologize for being busy. I'm giving advice to myself just as much as I am you by saying to be patient; they would not have picked you nor contacted you had they thought it a waste of their time. Good luck!

Congrats, Dishit! Will you be able to visit both schools? The city of College Station, TX is going to be much different than that of Raleigh, NC. I don't know how important that factor is to you though. Texas is a great place to live overall, and A&M has an excellent reputation, in this part of the country especially, as being a mainstay for engineers. Good luck with your decision, and let us know the outcome!

I, too, will be taking at least two recruiting trips in the coming weeks. One will to be to WashU in St Louis, the other to UCal Riverside, both for Chemical Engineering. They have both sent a tentative schedule for the 2-day events, but during the time when I'm individually meeting with professors and current grad students, what are the things I should ask? What should I look for while there to help me make my decision? What should I wear to these? Thanks!

I figured as such, just thought I'd get a formal notification.
-
Hey dugmel, congrats on your several acceptances. Can I ask when/how did you hear from Yale?
-
Congratulations paul! My visit is March 1-2, so I am also hoping to find a place during that time. I will be looking off campus, as I have already been told by the housing department that they have nothing that fits my needs (3 dogs) You'll have to let me know how your visit goes!
-
WUSTL is my top choice for Fall 2013 as it stands right now! How has your first year been? I earned my BS in Physical Sciences with my teaching certificate in Texas, so we can relate somewhat I'm going for my PhD in Chem Engineering though. Can you help me with questions about where to live??
-
Yaydonicus- Congrats on your acceptances! Is that U Wisconsin? Washington? My acceptances mentioned the stipends in the acceptance letter, both of which are coming from chemical engineering departments. I assumed your fields would be similar. Did they make any mention of a recruiting visit? Maybe they'll send you a supplementary letter later detailing the stipends, but I would think you would have heard that from UW by now.

2013 Revival! I was accepted to WashU's Energy, Environmental, & Chemical Engineering PhD program, and right now it is my first choice! I found a separate St. Louis topic in the City Guide forum, but a general search for St. Louis keeps bringing me to this one, so in efforts to reach as many people as possible, I'm trying to bring this back to the forefront. I haven't seen anyone mention dogs as a living concern, so I will put it out there. Those of you who know the area well, here are the things important to me: Safe- I'll be bringing my girlfriend and 3 dogs Place to take the dogs for walks- Is Forest Park open to dogs? I'd like to let them play outside every day if I could, so renting a house/duplex may be more likely than an apt., but I'm wide open right now. Proximity- I'd like to live closer than a 20min. drive to school (not med center) and within the same range of grocery stores Price- I'm from TX, so I'm used to the lower cost of living that StL offers, and I'd like to pay less than $650/mo if possible. Who else may end up at WashU in Fall2013??

This is the kind of garbage I'm nervous about when I begin next fall. Your advisor should have known well before he picked you what your background was. Either he's foolish enough to not realize what havoc this could cause for your educational and professional career, or he's a heartless prick who doesn't care, or there's more to the story. Whatever the case may be, I would agree with Kaister; sit down with him and talk it out. If he's the heartless type, maybe go to the department head or another professor you trust and that knows your background. I wish you the best. Let us know the resolution.
