  1. It works about the same way at UVic. Those with SSHRC's no longer get the university fellowship they were awarded, whatever that amount is (this varies between students, they offer you whatever they think your research is worth). Those with SSHRC doctoral awards get a top up from the school, those with SSHRC CGS awards don't, because the amount of the CGS is higher than the regular fellowship anyway. You're right about the amount for SSHRC doctoral, but if you win a SSHRC CGS it's $35,000/year. Also, students with external awards don't generally get TA work. I think part of the reason for putting in all the work to apply for OGS/SSHRC has to do with recognition/prestige. Even if you don't end up making very much more money (although to be honest, for me, an extra $5000 IS rather a lot of money), it looks great on your CV to list a major award. Also, a lot of schools make it quasi-mandatory for students to apply.
  2. Hi, The Doctoral SSHRC app should definitely have a specific structure. There are instructions with the applications materials, but my notes from last year's application are: * Clearly state your current level of graduate study; * Indicate what stage you are at in your thesis; * Provide the name of your supervisor of doctoral studies, if known; * Provide an outline of your thesis proposal, including, for example, the research question, context, objectives, methodology and contribution to the advancement of knowledge; * Describe what you hope to accomplish during the award tenure and what will remain to be done before you obtain your degree. The grantscrafter at my school even suggested that you could provide subheadings to clearly indicate where you'll discuss your research question, your methodology, your previous work, etc. Hope that helps! It will also depend somewhat on what field you're in. Ask your department for old/sample winning proposals, they usually have some kicking around.

Hmm... I got an email from SSHRC today about an upgrade to a Bombardier CGS as well. Hearing that several other people have received a similar email makes me afraid that they've made a mistake somehow, or sent it out to a whole list instead of individuals or something... unless they just happen to have sent out several emails on the same day? This is a bit worrying...
  4. Hi, You'll want to check out this page, on the "interest-free status" option OSAP offers: http://osap.gov.on.ca/eng/not_secure/App_cifs_fulltime_123.htm It's pretty easy. Basically, there's a form you fill out and submit to your school (assuming you're attending a graduate school in Ontario - if you're out of province, you submit the form directly to OSAP after your school signs it). All the form does is tell OSAP that you're still registered in a University program, and they hold off on charging you interest. I believe they give you 6 months from your (undergrad) graduation date to get them the form -- the deadline should be apparent on their website. If you don't get the forms in until September, they'll just reverse any interest they had charged you in the meantime. Hope that helps!!

    SSHRC

So, I've spent the last 2 days emailing back and forth with SSHRC (they were actually very prompt and helpful, surprisingly - responded to my email within 24 hours, sent me a confirmation of my award as well as scans of my letter/documents.) Confirming acceptance of the award by email was easy. Now that everything has been sorted out with SSHRC via email... of course my hard copy letter is in my mailbox today. It's postmarked May 26th, which is totally strange - I do not understand how it took nearly two weeks for a piece of regular mail to get to me (Victoria, BC) from Ottawa. Toronto to Victoria never takes more than 5 business days. Anyway, if anyone is still waiting, try emailing them!

I haven't received a letter. I contacted the awards people at my FGS, who told me to contact SSHRC - haven't heard back yet. My FGS seemed very unconcerned, which, of course, made me MORE concerned...

    SSHRC

I contacted my FGS, and they said other winners at my school are *just* starting to get letters, so I should wait a week. They told me if I still haven't received a letter in a week, I should get in touch with SSHRC, and forwarded me the name of a contact person there. So, I guess it's another week of daily mailbox trips for me!

Is there anyone left (in Canada) who hasn't received their letter yet? I keep giving it one more day before I get in touch with SSHRC, but I'm afraid it's never coming...

I'm in Victoria, and no letter for me, yet.

Just wanted to encourage you not to give up on the gender angle - my proposal was extremely gender-centered, and despite my supervisor's advice not to, I even used the F-word (feminist! yikes!) in my proposal, and I've been funded. Hopefully that's not what affected your application's outcome, I would be pretty irritated to find out that anyone lost funding because of a focus on/interest in gender. It sounds like you have a pretty incredible CV/background, hopefully next year is your year!

Yep, still no official letter yet, but according to my department I've got a PhD SSHRC for the next 3 years - I'm 1 year into my program, now. I've never published anything, ever, let alone peer-reviewed. I've frequently been told by profs and administrators that your discipline heavily affects whether publications are important or less important (for winning SSHRC). I'm in History!
  12. Successful/unsuccessful: Successful!!! MA/PhD (if PhD, specify SSHRC/SSHRC CGS/Vanier): **EDIT: Was originally granted a PhD SSHRC, but have been subsequently upgraded to a CGS! Department: History # of years into program: 1 year into PhD (started PhD in September 2008, so, about 9 months in.) MA Major Awards & Value: Just the regular fellowship for History MA's at York (in my year it was $14,000). PhD Major Awards & Value: Regular fellowship at UVic, now the SSHRC! Undergraduate GPA: 8.0 (A) Graduate GPA: 7.75 Research contributions/Publications so far: One graduate conference (pretty informal), no publications. Strengths of application: Research proposal maybe? Very consistent high GPA through undergrad & masters. Weaknesses of application: Zero publications. Only a 1 year Masters. Level/Form of Departmental Support (i.e. SSHRC workshops): Both departmental and university wide workshops, dedicated "grantscrafter" who reviews applications, lots of editing and feedback from supervisor and others in my department. University at the time of application: University of Victoria University where you will take up the award: University of Victoria

Just wanted to add another confirmation of results! I'm also at UVic (History department), and a contact in my department just emailed to confirm that I've won a doctoral SSHRC! I'm over the moon, I was convinced I'd have to apply again. Big congrats to all the other winners! More importantly, sympathies to those who have to try again.
  14. I did my BA and MA at the same school, and applied (and was accepted) for a PhD there as well. I ended up going elsewhere for the PhD, but I wrestled with this issue quite a bit. From my discussions with faculty, if it's a top school or has a very reputable program, it really doesn't matter. This is particularly true if it's a large school with lots of faculty - you can work with very different people than you did during your BA if it's a large school. Overall they told me not to let that issue make the decision for me. It doesn't look bad on your CV or anything. (For context - I'm in History. This probably all differs in other disciplines.)
  15. Hi fellow grads! I'm planning to start a reading group in graduate history (I'm a year 1 PhD in History), and wondered if anyone had experience or advice to offer. It will be grad students only, intended to facilitate discussion of some secondary material, and for anyone to present their own research if they want, as well. (We've chosen a particular theme to work from, as well - the group I'm starting will be a gender history group, others are starting a race/ethnicity group). Any advice is welcome
