  1. strange. i did an unpaid internship in the berlin embassy (logged a few days in frankfurt too) in 2005, and i know i had to write some sort of SOI for that. also, i recently applied to unpaid DC based internships with state and i had to do a cover letter for that. thus i just found it very strange that for well paid internships, there was no cover letter. seems like without cover letters it would be that much harder to decide between applicants. certainly made it a lot easier to apply though.
  2. So i just applied to some dept of state internships with the pathways program. what i couldn't figure out is why there was no blank for a cover letter. i looked through the application many times to find the space for this but never could locate anything. am i blind? the jobs are only open for a very brief time, ultimately allowing a relatively small group to apply. i'm wondering if the app i just filled out is just a preliminary step and a cover letter would come later if you get that far. or can it be that it's based entirely off of resume? has anyone gone through this process and can shed some light on this for me?
  3. A Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/433159470113000/
  4. Nope, I don't live in dc yet. Trying to figure that bit of logistics out now. It's a bit nerve wracking. Miskina, when are you heading for dc? I think there is an orientation on the 19th.
  5. Oh, and I'll be in int affairs as well. I've registered and everything.
  6. I'm attending as well and am excited. I don't think there is a Facebook group and I though I saw gwu say on their blog that they weren't going to start one.
  7. Well, the Elliott school does and Denver's korbel probably offers something like that
  8. admittedly, i didn't have a compelling reason (for them) and left that part of my request vague.
  9. apparently all APSIA schools, including Denver, have a deadline of April 20 if you received a fellowship. if you didn't, i'm not sure.
  10. I asked Denver for an extension. They said no.
  11. I'm surprised. In my contact with them both per phone and email, they've been very quick to respond.
  12. I got the same response via email. this was a little confusing because i thought i had just written a letter to Jeff Miles, but i guess I will go to the admitted students day and then write a more fleshed out and better informed email to Jeff Miles. Bonus points to GWU for a very fast response.
  13. I'm going to give this a go today with the Elliott school. My expectations are low. Anyone else talked to gwu?
  14. well, i didn't get in to SIPA so i don't want this to sound like sour grapes. However, i too had nothing sent to me after my application. i did ask them a question during the application phase via email and never got a reply. nada. i have a number of friends who did grad work at columbia all across the spectrum. My law school friend didn't like the school, but did say the career services was awesome. My other 4 friends who went there dislike it from top to bottom. My friend in the social work school asked about an alumni database to use for networking purposes. they told her it was on a card system (this was 2 years ago) and if she had a specific name she wanted to look up they could get back to her with the individual's information in a week to two. now, obviously this isn't the same program, so grain of salt and all that, but it's stories like these that made me decide against columbia long before my decision letter arrived. my undergraduate experience was the polar opposite of this, and so i'm definitely spoiled. But, while i'm more than capable of doing a lot of legwork on my own, if tuition is that high, i expect to see some return. congratulations to those who got in and i sincerly wish those of you who attend the best of luck. ny is an amazing city full of opportunity and obviously SIPA has its great points. hope to meet you in the field one of these days.
  15. I also got into korbel with 12000 in funding. I know very little about the real reputation of the school. I've also never really been to Denver. I hear the campus is in a nice part of town. I'm wondering about how feasible it is to not have a car there. One of the things I like about the school is the study abroad in d.c. option but I'm also curious about how good of a idea that is in practice. I have been very impressed with their communication since my admit. Makes me feel like administratively the school might be well run, which is something I've been spoiled with since doing my undergraduate at middlebury.
