  1. I'd recommend using "How to Write A Lot" by Paul Silvia (http://www.uncg.edu/~p_silvia/). His book is all about how to make writing as natural a part of your day as drinking coffee. It might not be great for improving writing style, but his book is a great resource for strategies that turn writing into a habit.
  2. I don't think you'll hear back from them until around mid-January when they make admission decisions. Though the only reason I know this is because my POI at the Ohio State emailed me about the quant division doing their applicant review a bit earlier than the rest of the department.
  3. It depends on the program. I've heard that it varies between 3-8 interviewees per spot for clinical. No idea about other programs, though.
  4. Hey all, I'm looking for a good refresher in statistics before I go to any of my graduate school interviews and was not a fan of either of the stats books I used during my years in undergrad (both of which were stats for behavioral sciences text books). What're your favorites, or which were most useful for really nailing down difficult concepts? I'm considering getting Discovering Statistics Using R (http://www.amazon.com/Discovering-Statistics-Using-Andy-Field/dp/1446200469/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1386492444&sr=8-1&keywords=learning+statistics+with+r), so I'd also like to hear any thoughts about that. Thanks in advance!
  5. Howdy fellow gradcafers! I'm sort of freaking out at the moment because UNC-Chapel Hill just sent me an email inviting me to their Visitation Day in February. Has anyone else heard from them or other schools, or is this just in their Quantitative Psych program?
  6. Quant Liz Lemon, by OU, do you mean Oklahoma? Is their program that strong? And funny story, I'm not really interested in the quant research going on at USC.
  7. Hello fellow gradcafe members (gradcafers?), To cut to the chase, I'm applying to quant programs this fall, but I'm afraid that the ones I'm applying to are all a bit too highly ranked to guarantee that I'll get into one. Here's the list: - Arizona State (First Choice) - UC Davis (Second Choice) - UCLA - University of North Carolina - Ohio State Here are my credentials: - 3.91 Undergrad GPA - 4.0 Grad GPA (I've taken the 3 methods classes that the grad psych program at my university offers) - GRE: Verbal- 162; Quant: 164; Analytic Writing: 4.5 - Current member of two labs: working on two manuscripts in one (which is my senior project) and assisting a graduate student in running his dissertation research (will probably get a poster out of that) - Currently have one poster presentation at a national convention (SPSP 2013) Are there any schools that I am overlooking? What sort of safety schools exist for this field? I'm primarily interested in finding programs with research oriented towards different varieties of statistical modeling that also happen to have social programs. Thanks for any advice!
  8. In psychology, what matters the most (at least from all of the mentors that I've had in university) is research and potential to do research, so I don't think an IA masters will necessarily increase your chances, other than showing that you have the potential to succeed in a graduate program. If I were you, I'd look into Peace Psychology programs. I can't think of many off the top of my head, but that sounds like the way that you might want to go, at least within the social psychology field.
  9. Since there hasn't been a Fall 2014 applicants thread, yet, I was wondering where you all found the programs you applied to. Right now I've been using the APA Report on Quantitative Psychology (http://www.apa.org/research/tools/quantitative/index.aspx), but I was wondering if there were any other places where I could find a list of schools with quant programs. Any help would be much appreciated. If one requires or wants more information, my intent so far has been to find schools with quant programs that also have social programs. Cheers!
  10. Hey, everybody! I'll be applying to a bunch of Quantitative and a couple Social PhD programs this fall. It's gonna be a wild ride, but it should be pretty interesting.
