ASHA requirements - physical science
Inny replied to clydeyo12's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I think Astronomy qualifies for physical sciences. -
That sucks! You know, even if there wasn't an increase in SLP applicants (and I would bet there was... at every school...), just the fact that the Faculty of Rehabilitation (is that what it's called at U of A?) had to process that many applications for OT could slow them down in processing the SLP applications too.
-
I agree with this. ETA: I wouldn't worry too much about ONE pre-req that is slightly below a B+
-
Congrats to all of you guys! Dal does not seem easy to get into (especially for students not from the Atlantic), but you guys have done it!
-
I'm not a Quebec student, so I can't speak to that, but I've been given the impression Quebec is fairly generous to its students (in comparison to other provinces). You kind of bring up an interesting point about calling though. I have this paranoia about bothering schools so much they rescind their offer of admission
-
I agree with this! Call! They did contact you after all. Perhaps start off by framing it as "I want to check that you received my proof of enrolment and it's considered a sufficient prerequisite" if you're a little hesitant. ETA: Congrats to those accepted at Dal! Fantastic news!

I think you will be fine. A girl in my program got into SLP at U of T with only the minimum number of volunteer hours. Then again, I'm pretty sure her GPA was off the charts. The fact that we were only allotted 150 characters to describe each volunteer experience doesn't suggest to me it's that heavily weighted.

Definitely true! I think the winters are worse than in Toronto, where I am. But I guess that's good incentive to stay indoors and study
-
I agree -- I think you're accepted! Montreal's a great place.
-
That's fantastic!!!!!! Sounds like you'll be coming back to your homeland, if you so decide. G'job!
-
UBC gave me til April 5th to respond and April 12th to give the deposit - I'm glad they're letting us wait til the ORPAS decisions are out! Nice to see someone else who was also interested in applying at U of O. But I also didn't end up applying for similar reasons. If I didn't get in this round, I would have applied there next year.
-
I really wish all the schools would be like ORPAS and just give us an exact date when all the decisions would be announced

Congrats!!!!!

Let's discuss Northwestern...

From what I have been told by someone I know in the program, it's not uncommon for people to fail/be kicked out. -
Just to play devil's advocate for a moment -- we need to remember that some applications are just really weak. I'm not talking about "Somewhat lower GPA but lots of clinical and research experience", I'm talking like, 2.0 and no experience kinds of applications. There has to be a way to weed these out. Otherwise it would take a century. BTW -- does GA = graduate assistant?

I actually quite enjoyed that anecdote. Thank you!

Thanks! And yes it was UBC! <3 I'm super excited!

I got accepted today! I'm going to be an SLP! <3

They have letters on file for me from grad school but that's it. They'll just have to change them a little. When I interview with them, I'll ask them if they can just call. And congrats AJV! Your hard work has paid off! Can I ask why you decided on Portland for your post-bacc?
-
That sounds suspicious to me. Did you follow up? There was one year, where the University of Toronto SLP program accidentally sent a "Congratulations on your acceptance...!!" email to the people they had just rejected a few days earlier. It had been a coding error, supposedly. My point is that, in this case, the initial response from the school was the correct one. The later email was just an error. ETA: Here's the article about it.

All I can say for U of A is that a former classmate did SLP there and loved it. So speaking of Plan D... I got a job interview at a university in the US to be a lab coordinator... which is super exciting. But the interview is next week, and they're asking for reference letters. I don't want to bug my referees again without knowing if I've gotten into grad school or not. (The job would be for next school year... so only if I don't get into SLP...). Looks like I'm going to have to suck it up and ask them for another letter.

How many schools should you apply to?
Inny replied to toriec's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Other than just improving your chances, is their a particular reason you want to apply to the US? I had low grades, and from the experience of others I knew there was no way that I would get into Canada, but I had a good shot at the US. So as I saw it, I had a choice: I could spend up to $50,000/year, for up to 3 years at an American school, or I could live at home and spend a bit of money ('a bit' was quite a bit, but nothing compared to the tuition of an American school) going to a local university to pick up extra courses (I ended up picking up a second degree, but that's another story). If you have the financial resources to spend that kind of money in the US, that's fantastic. But if that money may be a bit of stretch, consider that if you're not going til 2015, you still have plenty of time between now and your applications to improve any perceived weaknesses in your application... Best of luck! PS A lot of people I know only apply to three - Western, U of T, and McGill. So five sounds good to me (I applied to four -- all the schools that didn't require the GRE) -
Thoughts on doing research in grad school?
Inny replied to seahorse's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I'm just wondering -- could you not find opportunities like that at other times/in other places? I just thought I should point out, it hardly seems like a once in a lifetime opportunity... I love doing research, but I think there should be other opportunities for you to be involved with research. Like I said, I love with doing research... however I don't think I could manage 20 hours a week on top of a regular graduate school schedule. -
23 days until the ORPAS decisions come out... A classmate of mine got her acceptance to Western like, 3 minutes after midnight on the day the acceptances came out.
