  1. There was an NYU comp lit acceptance posted on the results board. Are you searching that board? Click the results link at the top of your screen and search by school.
  2. Did anyone apply to UC Irvine complit?????
  3. Just wanted to chime in and say hi. I was accepted last week in the UCR comp lit department!
  4. Just to add a funny rejection story, my usc rejection arrived in an email with the subject line "USC Fall 2015 Admission" and I was driving when I received it, so I just barely glanced down and saw it. Needless to say I immediately became so excited and cocky because i thought for sure i was accepted! I started imagining funding packages and weighing two offers against each other.... When I got home and read the email I realized that it said I was rejected, and further the grad Secretary had simply responded to an email I sent her a couple days earlier, so the subject line situation was my own fault! I totallY set myself up on that one....
  5. Hey! congrats! Where did you get accepted at? It definitely is a huge relief to get accepted. I was admitted to UC Riverside complit, and that program is a very good fit so I'm not too worried about USC. I'm still waiting on one more program (I bravely only applied to 3 programs).
  6. People do sometimes turn down offers to reapply, but to be honest, unless it was a bad fit why would you? And if you were admitted it's probably a decent fit for you. I don't like the "safety school" lingo for PhD programs, because every PhD program is competitive. Also you must ask yourself what you would do with that extra year to make your apps stronger, and would it even be worth it? Or would you just be rolling the dice all over again with a similar application? There are no guarantees that you will publish that article within the year, or whatever accomplishment you hope to achieve. If you want to wait to try your hand again at a dept that admits 5 people every year and receives 500 applications, then no, don't turn down your offer. It sounds like the real question for you may be: what are the necessary parameters that must be met to allow myself to go into a humanities PhD program? There are very few jobs no matter where you get your PhD from. Research shows that there is only an 11% difference in the amount of people getting jobs from a "top 6" program than from a "top7-50" program (or something along those lines). Given that placement is generally bad everywhere, 11% more people landing in TT jobs is not that many more and may ultimately not be worth it the extra year and the extra money. But hey, it's just my opinion. I'm no expert.
  7. rejected at USC complit. I thought it was late to get notified. I emailed the secretary and she was super sweet in letting me know. oh well. Edit: Now there's one other USC complit rejection on the results board but still no admits.
  8. Is anyone still waiting or heard anything from USC complit/Spanish/French? I've heard nothing, and I'm starting to think I'm rejected. Perhaps no USC complit applicants are on GC this year?
  9. I can already tell that this thread is going to be amazing!
  10. So yes I know we're all in the humanities and our lives are intricately intertwined with our reading. But what are you listening to??? We all have the soundtrack of our lives, whether to get us through tough admissions season or just in general. So here's your chance to make all of our lives richer.... I'll start, because right this very moment I'm listening to Beck: Morning Phase, and it is very nice indeed. I was so excited for this album to come out some time ago due to the single Say Goodbye that I first heard. I love that song. And then, you know, that whole Grammy's things too...
  11. Thanks! Yes I'm thrilled. On another note, I do think that complit notifications are just beginning to notify. Someone always posts about most programs if not in the forum on the results. So no word is probably a good thing at this point.
  12. Thanks! I was starting to get worried! Since I had heard no word I thought perhaps that they had already notified but that none of the applicants were on GC. But thankfully I was wrong!! I'm very excited! First acceptance.
  13. Accepted to UC Riverside comp lit with four years funding (I have an MA)!!!!! SOOOOOOO happy!!!!
  14. I saw it!!! It was awesome! Mods must have deleted it
  15. Also most complit departments have NOT notified yet.
  16. I wouldn't give up complete hope. On the results board in the past they have sent out interviews as late as Feb 14. Most years they were sent earlier, but hope is still there. And they typically don't notify acceptances until March at the earliest.
  17. This week we're going to get real results! I can feel it!
  18. UGG. That guy should step down from the rankings. The Gourmet Report should be banned and reconstructed under a new name with new methodologies. Please take these rankings with a grain of salt people.
  19. I didn't really think about the difficulty of gathering a bunch of profs from different depts @mollifiedmolloy. That definitely makes sense.
  20. Its not you. Department sizes and funding for the humanities have been dwindling in the US. Mostly due to the recession and the shrinking number of tenure track positions. Also I imagine that US programs just receive 3 or 4 times more applicants than most UK programs. Even Oxbridge gets way fewer PhD apps than US correlates. Don't feel bad. At the final round of decisions everyone is more than qualified and decisions become much more arbitrary. But also you applied to the most competitive US programs.
