Fall 2015 Acceptances (!)

30-40% acceptance rate is actually pretty competitive for undergrad. That seems to be the most competitive CalState for undergrad. I'm assuming they get an exorbitant amount of applications, but I'm impressed. There are many well-known LACs that admit around that number, yet the Calstate system doesn't get the same type of prestige as other schools with similar stats, which is lame. -

are you sure about those numbers? I live in California and I googled acceptance results to undergrad at CSULB and found ranges from 30-40% acceptance. Transfer acceptances are usually higher than undergrad which could mean 40%-50% transfer acceptance rate. In terms of the MA programs that's a whole different game and each department accepts at different rates. -
It actually could mean they're still reviewing your app. Because you're not American it's not likely they're going to invite you to a campus visit--too expensive assuming you're abroad right now--which means your file will be reviewed differently than US applicants. You should call them first thing tomorrow and get clarification.

Rona you should send an email to the Director of Graduate Studies at both places. Explain your situation and your relevant work experience (because in your field work experience counts for a lot), and ask them if a case like yours would be considered. They should be honest with you. If they say no, you can always take some community college courses relevant to the field and make sure to get As in them and then try again. -

My academia.edu profile was getting tons of action late Dec. And early Jan. I thought for sure I'd hear something early, but I've heard nothing yet -

The comp lit crew on this site is relatively small, but I genuinely think most places just haven't notified yet. Even to compare to English, many English programs are just now sending out interviews. Also, for most programs there is tremendous variability regarding notification dates from year to year. This week seems to be the opening week for acceptances, and it's only Monday! -

Has anyone applied or heard anything from USC complit? I know last year they notified really early. -

Well, Damon's the good the bad and the queen album had some good songs. And grahams first solo album is great. But yeah, agreed, modern life, parklife, and the great escape are legendary! I'm a huuuuuge Britpop fan -

I would think the Derridean would be at an advantage either way, assuming it is a good paper. First because writing on Derrida is extremely difficult and not many people attempt to write about him nor do it well enough to use as a writing sample. Second, deconstruction, in my opinion, is actually very political and historical even if not addressed directly in the paper at hand. And third, Derrida is not necessarily super trendy right now so interest in him may be viewed as more serious than interest in trendy topic X. This could be refreshing to adcoms and make up for any lower GRE scores. Perhaps that applicant would be seen as outside of the box and more serious in their endeavors since they want to study things other than "hot topics". In terms of the other side of this argument that you suggest, I would really hope that adcoms would not read a paper with wider eyes over GRE scores. That would simply be unethical since there is no evidence that stronger scores have any connection to ability to write a strong paper. I also highly doubt that they would think they "missed something" in a paper, especially over GRE scores, since they, after all, are the professionals in this situation, not us. That being said, I didn't write about Derrida (although I like his work and struggle over it a lot), and my GREs are pretty good. -

@feministfarmer Click the link at the very top of this webpage that says Results Search. There you can search for all admit/rejection stats by school, program, year, etc. I think that's what you are asking correct? -

The GRE is a tricky topic. On the political science boards there's a faculty thread where a lot of insight is given into the admissions process. They all said that graduate school-wide cut-offs for GREs are in place, and so long as you meet that cut off you are fine. If you do not meet that cut off they can use a waiver to admit you, but only so many waivers are available to use per season by each department. I know that in my complit apps at least two programs mentioned graduate school GRE cut-offs. I too did not have much time to study for the GRE and my scores were decent, not great, but above the cut-offs. I do worry that lower GRE scores may prohibit any exceptional funding opportunities that are awarded by the graduate school as a whole rather than the departments (any funding above the standard package for admitted students).
