  1. hmm. mine says 2014 New Genres MFA... but I also don't know what it said before because I haven't been checking it, so not sure if that helps haha.
  2. I think on mobile you have to click on "full version" at the bottom of the page to see the same view as on a computer, then it should be at the top
  3. rejection over here from Yale sculpture getting antsier for whatever comes next
  4. aghhhh. I really wish I didn't know exactly when to expect to hear/not hear something... jkfldsjf; This thread is addictive but also seems to add to the anxiousness hugely
  5. typically (from browsing threads from past years) this all happens in the all art admissions freak out thread. But I guess popular opinion will decide whether we buck the trend this year.
  6. Just to clarify here. To make sure that Photoshop won't change your image size (read: total number of pixels) when you change ppi, all you need to do is uncheck "resample image" in the image size dialog box.
  7. http://slideroom.besnappy.com/faq#media-210 I posted this in another thread, but as you can see in the link above, slideroom says that it will resize the image to 1280x1280 pixels at 72 ppi, so submitting something that is larger than that (more pixels, regardless of the ppi) accomplishes nothing, at least on slideroom.
  8. anyone else checking their google analytics religiously? Every time I see that my site got a hit from a city where I applied to a school: super excited!... then when I see that they only spent 11 seconds on the page....
  9. I'm pretty sure this needs to be posted at least once a year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2-5kYWrp8A
  10. yes, after purchasing a plane ticket, the free lunch will be a nice consolation. any idea how many they interview?
  11. yep, see you there.
  12. following up on the Slideroom image dimensions, Slideroom's own FAQ section explains that " Our processors will resize anything larger than 1280 x 1280 x 72 ppi to fit within those limitations." (from the answer to the question "What size should my media files be?", 6th question in the Media section of the FAQ) So, it seems that its actually not at all helpful to make your images any larger than those dimensions.
  13. Really don't worry about stretching. Even the smaller of the dimensions you've listed are huge for a computer screen. Even if they were to use a massive 27" or 30" monitor to view, 1700 pixels for the short side is bigger than the height of the monitor. At that point going bigger just allows them to zoom in more to see texture or detail etc.
  14. I don't know what the best thing is. But printing them out and photographing probably isn't it. I have a few pieces that are series, for which I've chosen to just show a couple images from each. It works for those because they are pretty easy to get a sense of after seeing a couple. The other option is to choose the best 2 or 3 or 4 series out of the ones you have and go into more depth with each. some schools (Yale comes to mind) explicitly say not to include composite images/more than one image per slide.
  15. I would say don't print them. Photography means a lot of things now, and that sounds like a very old fashioned idea. For some people "installed" might just mean posted on tumblr, or a 4x6 taped to the wall, or a print crumpled on the floor etc. Unless something about how you print/frame/install it is important to the work I don't think it would be necessary. it would also be unnecessarily expensive, and lower the image quality. maybe a more accomplished photographer can correct me. But I don't think I've ever heard of someone printing a digital photograph, photographing the print and presenting it digitally again, unless some sort of meaningful manipulation or process happened during one of those steps.
  16. pooch, your tumblr site appears to be password protected.
  17. Hey, I have a similar situation, maybe it will be helpful. I have 20 slides/videos (about 14 individual pieces) in my portfolio. Most of my work is performance based, so 16 or 17 of these are performance documentation, but I am also including three sculptures. For me its because 2 of the sculptures are my most recent work, and they are a direction I would like to continue going in. Another slight consideration was not wanting to get totally pigeonholed as only a performance artist, when I don't necessarily feel like that myself. I also considered both of the things Kafralal mentioned.
  18. Yes, when I posted that I was going to add the caveat of unless the work is something like time consuming sculpture or year long social practice projects or hour long videos..etc. but I thought it would go without saying. whoops. Also, the reason I said "images" not "pieces"
  19. I'm sure its good advice to not include subpar work just to meet some number of images, but I think that if someone has a hard time putting together even 10 solid images, they might not be ready for grad school. And I don't think that experimentation is necessarily undesirable. Maybe not everyone should try to pull it off in the portfolio, but I do think it can have a place if you still can show that you have a direction and aren't all over the map, and like you say, if the quality is high. If you're good at something, and you just intend to keep doing exactly what you already know you're good at, what can a school really offer you? Artists and their practices evolve. In my opinion it would get terribly boring to just keep doing what you're already good at. There's plenty of time in life to settle into a groove. School is the time to do weird and exciting stuff (if you're into that).
  20. Nice! that's great. I think it also adds a lot to the piece to know that.
  21. I'd be interested to see what you say about the turban series. Something about putting "turbans" on a white guy in a way that seems to be aestheticizing and using them almost as fashion accessories seems like it could be problematic. Just wondering how you think about that piece.
  22. I just phoned UCSD; they told me that everything is due on the 17th. Apparently if you submit by the 4th, the faculty would be able to look at your application at that time if they wanted to.
  23. some notes: I don't know about you, but whenever I use the same word a couple times in a row it makes me uneasy. Maybe consider changing the first use of "facilitate" to something like "fulfill"? unless it doesn't bother you. I think you could come up with something more useful to say about running a gallery than "yet has provided me a wealth of enduring connections with artists across all genres." If you're tight on words, here's 3 you don't need: "Within my work I use my structured paintings..." I find this part a bit awkward. The second sentence is a fragment. Some changes that I think would make it flow better: "[Drawing from/influenced by...] the notion from quantum mechanics that every possible outcome to a situation is realized in splintered universes, I paint figures with varied levels of connection to reality to call into question our process of free will as well as our concepts of space, time, fate, and self. If every decision comes true in one parallel life or another, are we as free as we think we are?
  24. what is an intensive backpacking trip? do you mean extensive? Also, if you find yourself running out of space, I would cut out the backpacking trip reference. A lot of people have backpacked Europe, and it doesn't really seem to add much to the statement. Another sentence about your experience running a gallery or something like that would be more useful IMO. ps. 3 Vancouverites in one thread. New record?
