Your grad program might count it, depending on how strict they are and the content of the phonology course. My adviser looked over the syllabus for my Phonological Theory class and said it counted toward the Phonetics requirement, since we spent a fair amount of time on phonetics at the beginning (my undergrad linguistics program didn't have a separate phonetics course either). They really just wanted evidence that I was familiar with IPA. For what it's worth, I haven't struggled with any grad courses that required phonetics as a prerequisite.

I just officially accepted my offer at Columbia TC! Really hard decision, but I'm thrilled (and a little apprehensive about moving). I declined MGH (today), Emerson, Northwestern, NYU, and took myself off the wait list at BU (all last week).

Today I officially declined my admission offers from Northwestern, Emerson, and NYU, and took myself off the waitlist at BU. Hopefully that will help a few people! Now I have to make a very difficult decision to make between MGH and Columbia. I love both programs but for different reasons, and there are so many advantages and disadvantages to either staying in Boston or moving to NYC. I'm completely stuck! At this point it looks like I'll be making a decision at the last minute, which is driving me crazy (although I know how lucky I am to have this problem).

Right now I'm just attending the Open House the SLP department is having on April 5th, since I'll be in the area anyway. If I really love it though, I'll ask if I can also go to the accepted students' weekend on April 12-13th as well. I wish the bigger event weren't so close to the deadline!

I thought I was reading it wrong when I saw that, or that at least it was the total for both years! My lord. I thought Columbia was insane at "only" $50,000. @clyde I got an email saying that the info was accessible on Albert.

I was wait listed at BU, and accepted to MGH and Emerson. I still have to visit Columbia, but if I don't love it there, I'm 85% sure I'm going to MGH this fall. BU is out of the running because while I feel their program was excellent, I didn't love it enough to deal with the wait list heartache. I was really excited about Emerson. The area is great (and very easy to get to from my apartment), I like the pediatric focus, it's a very friendly school, and it's cheaper than MGH. But after the open house, I just felt overwhelmingly underwhelmed. Plus, considering I'd need to do an extra summer since I'm coming in without all the pre-reqs done and no observation hours, the price difference between Emerson and MGH doesn't seem so daunting. I went in to MGH's open house feeling pretty lukewarm about the school, but I absolutely loved everything. The longer program doesn't matter to me. The facilities and faculty are amazing and I love their medical focus and more unique clinical placements. I get the feeling that it's easier to complete pre-reqs (both ASHA and CSD) through them as well, which is a bonus for me. I was also offered an assistantship, which while it isn't a lot monetarily (~$2,000 for the year), it still is heartening to feel that they apparently have some deeper faith in my abilities. Taking out $80,000 in loans is hugely daunting, but I'm fortunate because after I find a job, I can put all my salary toward paying off loans since my husband can support us alone. It's still such a hard decision, though.

Mine hasn't changed at all yet, either, but at least I can log on again now! I agree, I really hope that they just give us a definitive "yes" or "no" soon. Limbo is driving me crazy. Congrats speech310, $20,000 is great!

Congrats Kozo, that's wonderful! I too was up way too late, and checked at 1:30 am, and nothing had changed. And then at 2 am, the website wasn't working for me either, and it's still not working. Hopefully that's not a bad sign?

Wow, I hadn't realized that MGH was *that* much more expensive than Emerson (and Columbia is even more expensive than MGH, yikes!). I still think that I'm heavily leaning toward MGH because I really did like their program that much more than Emerson's. But... Emerson might be able to buy my love on the off chance that they give me a fellowship. I actually heard one person today talking about gradcafe. Wonder if it was one of you?

I have to run out the door right now, so I'll try to give a more thorough account later. But before going to both Emerson's and MGH's open houses yesterday and today, I liked them both equally. Today, I am absolutely leaning more toward MGH. Emerson was nice and had its strong points, but I thought MGH was so fabulous by every measure.

Does anyone know whether it has to be for credit or not? I found a non-credit online community college Intro Chem class for $100, but it seems too good to be true...

I got my letter! Exciting, even though no mention of funding (that would have been a blessing and a curse anyway, since I'm not super keen on moving far away). One part of the letter, however, confused me. They were talking about how you can defer for a year in order to do the pre-reqs elsewhere, and if you do that and maintain all grades above a B, "every attempt will be made to provide funding when you begin the two-year program." What exactly does that mean? That you'll be re-evaluated for a scholarship with everyone else, or you actually have an increased shot at getting one?

I don't know whether to be happy or sad about that! They have their admitted students' event tonight, and I was hoping to know either way about funding beforehand. I'm doubly nervous because if Northwestern's packet makes its way to me today, it'll probably be while I'm at Emerson so I won't see it until late tonight.

I always stick with Professor X until explicitly told otherwise. I've found most take their titles pretty lightly, or at least will address their preferences gently if you address them in a way they don't like.

Oh, trust me, I know that I'm incredibly blessed to have the options I do! I had been expecting one or two acceptances. MGH and Emerson were always pretty closely tied for second. I love them both for different reasons, but right now I'm leaning toward MGH because I know I have some funding there (but Emerson hasn't sent out their decisions for merit aid yet, so who knows).
