  1. I don't know about info sci and decisions but, for marketing, carlson is heads and shoulders above uconn. uconn is a decent school but carlson is top-notch.
  2. To be honest, b-schools MBA programs (with the exception of maybe the top 10 or, more tolerantly, top 20) are cashcows of universities. Especially when you're applying with GRE (which, unlike GMAT, won't affect their rankings), I think you have solid chances of getting into 30-40 by Bloomsberg (or USNEWS --does not matter that much). Be prepared to pay sticker price, though. Scholarships will be hard to come by. And I don't think recs matter that much. I hold an MBA from a top 20 institutions and both of my recs were shorter than 1 page. One problem with MBA recs is that schools know applicants very regularly write their own recs. Thus recs are often pretty much only ticks at lower ranked schools. You only need killer recs if you gun for the M7.
  3. In my opinion, most marketing professor jobs are in business schools and, being b-schools, people have to adhere to accreditation requirement. Many b-schools in the U.S. prefer to recruit professors with degrees from AACSB-accredited schools. I think this is one of the reason why a psychology degree suffers in terms of job prospects, as psychology departments never bear b-school accreditation. So your psychology friends are absolutely right that psychology PhDs can also apply for marketing job but your job prospects in marketing will actually be very limited. As of now, new marketing PhDs are still placing very well in both the U.S. and E.U., as the shortage for business professors are still happening. I did my master's in psychology and had to switch to marketing. I don't have much information on current psychology placements siutation though.
  4. Thanks. I actually lived in Europe for several years and can't wait to get back. I am also very fond of SE Asia. In short, I've been living in America for the last 5 years and have so enough of it. I need to retreat to some other place. It might not be an optimal move for my long term career but it's good for my mental health right now Regardless, I hold American citizenship and most of my immediate/extended family is in the U.S. so I always want a good option for a future comeback. And no, I ain't nowhere near that HEC guy. I very suspect that he's actually a cyborg in disguise. Humans can't be that smart. He's just 31. lol.
  5. Merci beaucoup. Those're very insightful comments, Peter. Real helpful coming from a French. So I take it that INSEAD & then HEC are head and shoulders above everyone else in France, that makes a lot of sense. I actually have eyes on Singapore and plan to go there for a teaching career so ESSEC has some competitive advantage but you are right that ultimately an academic career in Northern America is still very important to me. I guess I will have a tough time making decision.
  6. Hi guys, So I was lucky enough to have received a fully-funded offer for PhD in Marketing from ESSEC in France and they want me to make a decision before next Friday. However, I am still waiting to hear back from IESE, IE (Spain), Cambridge (UK) and HEC (France). Of course I will try to ask ESSEC for an extension but it looks like none of the other programs is gonna get back to me in time even with an extension from ESSEC. Anybody has insights on European Business Schools and would like to give me your opinion? ESSEC is reputable and its faculty have been very nice to me; furthermore my potential supervisor actually shares the same American Alma Mater with me so I guess it's a plus plus. Still, I feel like I am making an uninformed decision accepting the very first offer, not being able to weight-in all offers. (Granted, I am not a super-strong candidate and there's a chance that I will not receive any other offer.) How does ESSEC fare in Europe/France? Should I just go ahead and accept the offer? Or should I reject it and then pray 18 times a day while anxiously waiting for other programs? Or is there anything else I should do? Thanks so much in advanced for your opinions.
  7. I am looking at GSAS housing application right now I just realize that I have to pay $70 non-refundable deposit for the housing lottery. This sounds so unfair. It's probably the most expensive lottery in the history of America (and you have to pay a lot even if you WIN this lottery). Any thought on this? I am giving up on Harvard housing...
  8. I do, bro! [you are a bro, right?] Let's keep in touch coz it's hard to find guys at HGSE. We can do a bro down sometimes in Cambridge when Harvard plays Yale
  9. Sonic Youth, I disagree with the statement that says "not all grad programs at Harvard are created equal." All grad programs are created equal. HGSE is at the very top in its field, similar to the biz school or law school in their respective field. If people bank too much on material interests and think lowly of education, we educators have to fix it. Don't let the businessmen and lawyers tell you that they are better than you. I think your reasoning is flawed in the fact that you look at monetary gain as the only indicator of success in life. While it is certainly a major factor, money is not everything. I bet peeps from the b school and l school can make a lot more dough. But it's hard to tell who makes a bigger impact in our world. I was once a biz major and worked in real estate. It's a lucrative field. But then I asked myself if I would be happier dying with $5m in my savings account doing what I don't like to do or with some unpaid debt and a full enjoyment of life. You know my answer. If life is an endless journey on Earth then money is definitely the only thing that matters. However, as we all will die sooner or later and there's no way to wire money into the other realm, I don't find the idea of accumulating unnecessary wealth as very appealing. Sunshinegrl456, I say lets do it, darling! And see you in Cambridge!
  10. Is anyone familiar with cross-registering policies at HGSE (TIE program specifically). I found in the handbook: "Please note that as a member of the TIE program, you may take only one course at any individual school outside of HGSE. For example, you may take one course at the Harvard Business School and one fall course at MIT, but not two at either HBS or MIT." What does it actually mean? I plan to take one course at FAS + one course at HBS in my first semester and one course at MIT in my second semester. Does it sound alright? Thanks
  11. Hi guys, I have been stalking this forum for years and finally decide to come out of the closet. I will be doing TIE in the next Fall. Anybody interested in apartment hunting together? I think I am gonna need roommates. Harvard housing is so expensive and I don't like the idea of meal plan. Cheers
