  1. Lol I wouldn't really know how to discuss which might be better. I think it's a matter of taste.
  2. Later Wittgenstein is best Wittgenstein
  3. Jesus Christ we're a bunch of alcoholics. In all honesty though, if I get in somewhere, I'll drink myself into a happy stupor. If I'm shut out, I'll drink myself into a deep coma, one deep enough to propel me into a time where I have a better chance of getting in. It'll be like deep-space hibernation, except with alcohol.
  4. I'm not sure I have a favorite current philosopher. I guess I like some of Conant's stuff on Nietzsche. I don't read much contemporary work. Historically, Nietzsche is my favorite (clearly). He's the only philosopher that I'm confident in saying I'll never get sick of (he was my first philosophical love in a way).
  5. I think his thing is just pens. And basically a reasonable price range. Anything between $1-40ish is probably appropriate. I wouldn't want it to seem exorbitant or inappropriate.
  6. Thanks dude. I really appreciate it. I'm a bit down about it, because it sort of throws me back into the uncertainty of applications. Hopefully one of these other places will accept me.
  7. I never thought to do something like that, though the only thing that would really set me apart from other applicants would be an interest in Aesthetics or Chinese Philosophy, which aren't very popular (to say the least). Not really sure how much it would have helped.
  8. I think he just has a thing for aesthetically interesting pens. I don't think he has a preference as far as I know.
  9. Wooooo! Continental has finally pulled ahead. That's surprising.
  10. Awwww so I won't get to cigarettes swimming in Orangeade? Now I'm really sad.
  11. Rejected for the UK grant. I'm kinda bummed about it, but it wasn't my only option. Congrats to those who were recommended.
  12. I appreciate the info. I think I'd rather work for a year though than accrue 30,000(ish) in debt. Hopefully I'll be accepted elsewhere.
  13. Well, just received a rejection from the Fulbright Committee, so it looks like I won't be going to Warwick. Definitely hoping to hear some good news in the next few weeks.
  14. Nah. I've seen dfindley's okcupid profile (now unfortunately deleted). Definitely wasn't him. His pecs weren't muscular enough.
  15. That's pretty solid advice actually. Thanks for the suggestion
  16. Had a weird moment in the department today. Someone came in saying that he "had a high IQ and that he was looking for a community of people with high IQ's to socialize with" and that "he realized he hadn't been admitted to college because he was far too smart of the administration". He was dressed like a homeless person and was wearing a bag around his neck (no idea what was in it and I doubt I want to know). Best part? We're in the middle of doing a job search for the department, and one of the job candidates was in the department eating lunch with everyone at the exact moment that this guy comes bursting through the door rambling on about how he's so intelligent and he needs a community of geniuses who can live up to his standards. I didn't really have anyone to tell, so I thought I'd share with you guys.
  17. One of my letter writers is an aesthete and notorious wino, so I'll probably get him a decent bottle of wine. The other collects pens, so I figured a cool pen would be great for him (suggestions would be awesome if anyone has any). I'm not sure what to do for my other two writers. I've known them for years now, but I've never noticed any particular quirks of their which I might be able to exploit. Thoughts?
  18. Generally speaking, Post-Kantian German Philosophy, Chinese Philosophy, Aesthetics and (what some people call) Existentialism. I also have budding interests in Ordinary Language Philosophy and Phenomenology. So my interests are incredibly broad.
  19. Damn. Nietzsche missed out on a great subtitle there.
  20. I don't know why you think I'm being unnecessarily pessimistic. It's a tough break. I didn't discourage him/her from contacting the department or anything, and I didn't imply that it was university-wide or absolutely iron-fisted in design. You're cranking my statement up too much. I wasn't being nearly as extreme as you seem to be portraying me, and I certainly didn't encourage a defeated attitude. Chill out with the strawmen. Of course he/she should talk to the department. I'm sure it's possible to reason with them and get something accomplished. It's just a tough break. As for your post, it's not exactly compelling evidence. All it proves is that a different University in the UK made an exception for someone with similar circumstances. Which, again, just to make myself absolutely clear, is not an indication of a personal belief that OP should give up, just that he/she should be realistic and not put all of his/her eggs in the one basket, hence why I said concentrate to concentrate his/her efforts elsewhere, because at this point things are totally in the hands of the department/graduate school and their sense of reason and charity. EDIT: Just to be clear, I posted this in hopes of clarifying my statement. I'm not going to engage with you in some fruitless debate. I'm adamant that this particular thread will remain positive in its nature, and debate-free if I can help it.
  21. Yes it is. That's probably why the conditional admissions requirement is different.
  22. That's rough. If you honestly can't boost your GPA in time, then there really isn't much you can do. You could always talk to the department about your situation, but I think these conditions are a result of bureaucracy more than anything else, and I'm not sure if the department has much control over it. I'd say your best bet is to concentrate your efforts elsewhere if you can't meet the condition.
  23. If you look at the top of the page, next to the "Chat" tab it says "Results Search". Click on that and search "Philosophy", and you'll see the results.
  24. Yeah, for the most part. Though why Emory? It's mostly French philosophy and Pragmatism. Is it because of your interests in Phenomenology and "Existentialism"? Do you lean French or German?
  25. I think a decent number of us wear our stats on our sleeves. That's an interesting list of schools there. No Chicago? They have some decent Nietzsche people there.
