  1. That's a difficult question. I'd be just as happy in one dept as I would be in the other I think. Besides, I'm trying to do the dual degree.
  2. I would kill to hear from one of the two Chicago admits. It's my number 1 pick and I'd like some kind of details, considering that I haven't heard anything yet.
  3. Well...I hope there are more Chicago admits to come on Monday.
  4. Yes yes, of course, but today is drinking day.
  5. Yeah, I also just got an email from GSU asking me for another copy of my transcripts because they took too long to download it and it expired. Today's been a hell of a day. Thank god it's drinking day.
  6. It's alright. It wouldn't hurt so bad if I thought that Loyola wasn't sending out acceptances, but they are apparently (congrats by that way!) which makes this slightly more painful.
  7. I am so fucking pissed. I got a packet in the mail today from Loyola and everyone thought it was an acceptance. Turns out they had a "glitch in their system" and sent me an information packet.
  8. Ah! But his location says "New Jersey". The plot thickens.
  9. It's not quite insane enough. And he hasn't said anything racist or sexist yet. Something isn't right here.
  10. Woah. I could have sworn I was on thegradcafe, but it seems I've somehow found my way to /r/badphilosophy.
  11. I just find it interesting that there's a serious threat by the administration to dissolve the department (or at least, enough of one that it's been perceived as a legitimate threat by Forbes). Bad news for all involved.
  12. Anyone else see this email from Forbes? http://www.scribd.com/doc/204701507/CU-philosophy-chairman-email
  13. It's odd that it went out so late. It's great that the email leaned toward an offer of admission though. Congrats though.
  14. Person who received an email from Penn State about an interview, can you share any details? I didn't get anything which makes me a bit nervous. I guess I didn't think programs were going to be doing interviews for some reason.
  15. Chicago had better be soon or my heart might explode. I must check my email every 15 minutes hoping I'll see something.
  16. I don't have to pay tuition at my current uni because my dad works there, so if I don't get accepted, I guess I'll just bum around, take some classes, work on my writing sample, and reapply next year. Not exactly my first choice, but if I have to I will.
  17. Don't project what may be a rejection onto other programs. There's no intrinsic connection between a rejection at one school and your chances at others. U Minnesota might have received a batch of really strong candidates this year, and perhaps some of your other programs received applications from weaker candidates. Perhaps there was less funding this year. Who knows? Don't neurotically assume you'll get rejections everywhere because one program hasn't accepted you. You'll just end up stressing yourself to the breaking point.
  18. God damnit
  19. I knew he was a composer, but I've never liked his work to be honest. It's vaguely Chopin-y, but not as good.
  20. It really depends on how involved I'm getting. If I'm trying really hard to concentrate on it, I actually prefer dead silence. However, sometimes specific philosophers (especially people like Wittgenstein and Nietzsche) actually talk about the specific virtues of specific musicians, so I'll listen to the music they enjoyed to try to get into their heads, so to speak. So, for Wittgenstein, I'll listen to Schubert's Quintet or for Nietzsche, I'll listen to Beethoven or something out of Tristan und Isolde. Sometimes though, I just prefer to listen to music of my own choosing. During those times, I listen to Satie or Chopin, as I prefer their work over any other composer's.
  21. Not to mention specific Hegel scholars like Pippin. I wouldn't be too bothered by it though. He/she seems thoroughly analytic in approach, so we shouldn't be too surprised.
  22. Yeah, Penn State contacted me a while back, but my transcripts at the time were showing incompletes. I've had to wait until this week to send them to Penn State. I understand your frustration. I'd much rather be done, sit back, and wallow in my anxiety.
  23. Yeah, I've read Culture and Value and his Lectures and Conversations on Aesthetics, Psychology, and Religious Belief. My favorite out of CV is the story about his sister's house though. I wrote a paper on it in connection with the Lectures and Conversations, among other things. I think that's really the heart of his aesthetic orientation.
  24. I'm surprised that there's even one other Eastern Phil person here. Not exactly the most popular area of philosophy.
  25. I think I lean this way as well. Plus, considering my interest in Aesthetics, there's a bit more for me to work with in PI and PPF than in the Tractatus.
