Personally, I like Hamill's translation. It's only selections, but I think it preserves the drama of the text better than the Kjellberg.
-
Me too. But maybe we'll both end up at GSU together. Hey, feel like getting a drink together when the semester starts? I'm moving to ATL even if I get rejected.
-
Not to get too into this, but I think it's totally a stretch. A return to the body and the meaning of the earth (if we're referring to Thus Spoke Zarathustra) doesn't really have any ethical emphasis (or if it does, it's not normative or applied ethics). If anything in Nietzsche's work has to do with ethics, it's metaethics at most, and the things you're referring to have more of an existential value to them than (meta)ethical. My exclamation at the seeming impossibility of a Nietzsche and Bioethics project also has something to do with Nietzsche's approach to doing philosophy being incompatible with the kinds of approaches I've seen in works by ethicists, so I think there are a lot more problems for a Nietzsche and Bioethics paper than just content issues. But hey, if someone pulls it off and it's actually a convincing reading of Nietzsche's work, I'll legitimately eat a shoe and film myself doing it for the benefit of this forum.

SURVEY idea, seeking your input! (Please respond!)

Same as Vineyard. I'm not sure class ranks within the major are common, let alone class rank in general. -
I would eat one of my shoes if someone could write a believable dissertation on Nietzsche and Bioethics.

I used that book for the Eastern Phil course I co-taught. Good stuff, though I don't like the Zhuangzi translation.
-
Kind of dirty is an understatement.
-
I would have received my patches, but it seems that they've been sent back to Mars. Just kidding. I'll take a picture soon. Still trying to figure out what to sew them to.

I used Virginia Klenk's Understanding Symbolic Logic book in my symbolic logic course. It's good for the practice problems and the older editions teach you Polish notation (for whatever that's worth). You can get it illegally if you want/know how so it wouldn't cost you anything.

Stuff that I think is a must read if you're getting into Nietzsche: Early: The Birth of Tragedy Schopenhauer as Educator Middle: The Gay Science Late: Twilight of the Idols Beyond Good and Evil Genealogy of Morals Only after those would I suggest someone take a look at Thus Spoke Zarathustra. The book is notoriously difficult and infamous for giving people the wrong impression of Nietzsche. Out of all of those works though, Twilight is absolutely amazing, followed closely by Schopenhauer as Educator.

You're missing a few goodies, but overall it's a solid list. Though, as a Nietzsche guy, I would never advise someone to read Thus Spoke Zarathustra without having read several of his other works thoroughly first. It's probably one of the most difficult books I've ever read (for various reasons), and this is coming from someone doing his thesis on the work.

Of course. I just think it's unnecessary to say that one must be well-versed in logic and metaphysics to do Phil Language, because it's not really the case if you're going to be working on Ordinary Language Philosophy or you're going to be working in a more historical capacity. You'll only have to be well-versed in those fields if you're interested in working in the specific sub-fields which require you to be well-versed in logic and metaphysics, which doesn't really say much.
-
Not necessarily. One doesn't have to be incredibly well-versed in logic, for instance, in order to understand Austen or Cavell, and they're both language philosophers.

Moving from one PhD program to another?

Because perpetuavix doesn't feel like finding anything for you, here's what I found: http://leiterreports.typepad.com/blog/2010/08/transferring-phd-programs-twice.html Not sure if there's anything on switching just once on Leiter's blog, but that gives you a little data. -
Fair enough, but was that the case with Dfindley? I'm not entirely sure. Okay, maybe occasionally, but there were definitely times where it wasn't the case. It at least put me on the fence about Dfindley.
-
I'd just sit on it. Let them know that you're very thankful and that you're very interested in attending, and let them know your need for funding, and then just sit and wait. They might come up with more money or someone might drop out at the last second. You never know.
-
Just finished Foucault's "Fearless Speech". Now I'm kind of respecting Dfindley. God damnit.

There's something bittersweet about that Gene Wilder gif. You know, you don't have to give up on it. I know someone who was shutout for three years before they managed to get into a PhD program. And with an MA, you could always give teaching at a community college/high school level a go while you try to get into grad school. It's something to think about.

To be honest, I was going to edit the post to point out that it was in inside joke after a mountain of people started downvoting me, but I couldn't edit it (I guess you lose the ability to edit after a period of time). To be honest, the reputation points thing doesn't matter so much, it just bothers me a little that no one bothered to ask why I was saying something so clearly offensive when I don't have (to my knowledge at least) a history of making wildly offensive claims. And right now I'm staring at the saddest picture of David Tennant I've ever seen. You're going to make me cry zizeksucks.

Living the dream dude. I was able to co-teach a course on Eastern Phil with one of my professors last year and it was totally awesome. There's nothing more exciting than browsing various books, coming up with assignments, and figuring out what content you want to be included in the course. I'm pretty jealous.
-
Let's be honest, all of Dfindley's comments are horrible read out of context.
-
You know what? I think that the people that downvoted me shouldn't get their patches. Clearly they don't remember dfindley.
-
THANK YOU! God, and you people say you remember Dfindley.

Don't forget to find a hot Thai wife while you're at it.

YAY! Oh wait... Oh hey! This means I might be talking to you guys next year. Silver linings people, silver linings.
