  1. Most colleges allow people to sign up for 1 or 2 graduate classes as a "non-degree seeking" student. My professor recommended doing this as a way to not only get back in front of your professors, but also as a way to prove yourself as a potential successful graduate student. I think this would be a more useful way to go about getting positive LORs. Either way though, I think it's great advice to just reach out to a couple of your professors and reintroduce yourself before taking another class.
  2. I definitely wouldn't say Midwest schools are less competitive. The top ranked schools, if you care about that sort of thing, are schools in the Midwest for the most part. Number wise, I see what you're saying, but the Midwest has quality programs too.
  3. I also got in with a 3.3 overall. My CSD gpa was 3.44 and my GRE scores weren't phenomenal, but were enough to make me competitive. I got into the University of Northern Iowa. They also have Spring admissions. I did a lot of research internships during my undergrad which I know helped me out a lot.
  4. Thank you!! The best part was that I wasn't even expecting anything, I was just happy I got in. Made all the stress and anxiety worth it haha
  5. I was accepted from the waitlist at the University of Northern Iowa on April 16th! I was very excited and humbled that I was able to be offered admission this time around. To my surprise, I was offered a scholarship and an assistantship today! Even more overjoyed! Can't even believe it.
  6. Thank you @cosmicmorgan! My situation is very similar to yours @Madison. I applied back in 2013 and got waitlisted at 1 school. I actually was accepted off the waitlist, but due to financial reasons, I wasn't able to attend. I decided to just focus on myself and so I've been working a full-time job in a medical-ish field and retook the GRE - even though I didn't focus on getting experience specifically related to SLP during my time off, I feel more prepared to enter graduate school and am more confident that I will do well. It feels good to finally have some direction in my life, I feel like I've been living in limbo for awhile. Congrats to everyone else and for those still waiting, there's still time - don't give up!
  7. Thank you @whirlp and @jmjslpca! A huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders!
  8. Was just accepted off the waitlist at the University of Northern Iowa! Was seriously not expecting this. I kind of gave up a long time ago since I was rejected at most schools and waitlisted at two. Very excited!
  9. Thank you! i went there for undergrad, but for some reason, it's really difficult for us to get into Iowa for grad school. I wasnt at the open house, but I know a lot about the program if you have any questions!
  10. I was also waitlisted! Decided to decline the only acceptance I got, so I'm really hoping this works out for me otherwise I'll be applying a 2nd time.
  11. I was going to visit campus, but the financial office just informed me that they will only be offering federal loans to graduate students - no scholarships, grants, GA/TA positions, or tuition reduction. Its $50K for the entire program and since I would have to move out of state, that's more expenses I have to worry about. I have a little bit of money saved up, but I've been waitlisted at 3 other schools, so I think I'm going to wait it out. I'll be declining Saint Mary's offer - hope this helps someone else!
  12. I actually just emailed my professor from Iowa about this dilemma! My professor told me that it's very common for people to accept at one school, get off a waitlist at another, and rescind their acceptance from the first school in order to attend the school that took them off the waitlist. I think it would be totally okay for you to accept at your 2nd choice school if you see yourself being happy there and if you get off the waitlist at your top choice, tell the 1st school that you won't be attending. Grad programs definitely anticipate and even expect this to happen. I've been accepted at a program, but I'll likely be declining for financial reasons. I was waitlisted at both my top choices, so I'll be waiting it out and hoping for good news! A lot of schools have deposits, but I've come across a few that don't require it. Usually its between $300-$500. The deposits typically go towards your tuition cost for your 1st semester unless for some reason you don't attend, then you forfeit the deposit. And not a dumb question! I have a ton of them and I'm sure my professor is sick of hearing from me haha.
  13. I was rejected at my last school which sucks! I really thought I'd at least get a waitlist there. I emailed SMC and will be setting up a campus visit probably the week before April 15th!
  14. Yeah it looks like there's a good number of people who were admitted today. I want to stay positive and believe there's still a shot for an acceptance, but honestly we're probably either waitlisted or rejected, which really sucks. This was one of my top choices I hope it's a waitlist, but it's still not ideal.
  15. Just saw that someone was admitted on the results page. Mine still doesn't show anything so now I'm worried!
  16. Has anyone heard anything? I havent seen anything on the results page so I was thinking about emailing the department, but I keep thinking we should hear anytime this week.
  17. Ugh, it's such a stressful process! I've been waitlisted at my 2 top choices, rejected from 2, accepted at Saint Mary's and I'm still waiting to hear back from 1 more. I received my letter today in the mail from SMC and it didn't have much information other than that they would be sending out more material and emails about the program and campus. SMC is a little farther away from my hometown than I would like it to be, so I'm unsure if I'll be attending. If the last school I'm waiting on turns out to be an acceptance, I'll be declining my SMC offer, so hopefully that helps! If it's another waitlist or a rejection, I'll probably visit the campus and department and make a final decision from there. Hoping we end up being accepted off the waitlists!
  18. Same thing happened to me! I noticed near the end of January that my transcripts were missing. When I emailed the woman listed as a contact on the portal, she told me that the department would still be considering my application since all materials didn't have to be in by 1/15. I probably exchanged like 10 emails with this woman trying to check to make sure my transcripts got there haha. She was really nice and understanding about it though!
  19. I've been obsessively checking the portal and the results page this week because I thought we would definitely know by now. Hoping we hear tomorrow! I know they're on spring break, so that might be a factor. Who knows.
  20. Hey Ctor, I was accepted via email last Friday the 6th! It came as a shock because like you said, I thought they were going to conduct interviews and I was never contacted for an interview. I'm not sure now whether they are in fact going to hold interviews or not for any of the applicants. My acceptance letter stated that I would be getting material in the mail this week so I'm hoping this provides more insight for you/me. I'll be back to post to let you know more once I receive it! If you haven't heard from them this week, I would send an email asking where they are at in the process of making decisions. Can't hurt! I submitted my application on 1/13 so it might just be that they're sending out acceptances in waves based on submittal date. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions!
  21. I actually took a class about this during my undergrad. It was shocking to hear the amount of people who truly believe people of color have it easier, that everything is just handed to us due to affirmative action. I could go on and on about how untrue and discriminatory that is. I'm hoping I'm able to get into an SLP program this year, but it's definitely not an easy accomplishment. I come from a predominantly white community, so it is difficult at times trying to fit in and be comfortable, but I'm hopeful that more people of color pursue graduate school and the SLP profession in the future.
  22. I think it helps obviously if you're applying to jobs that would want that subset of skills/specialty area knowledge. The more knowledge and experience the better! I would say that even though the job placement rate is nearly 100% everywhere, salary and benefits would likely be affected based on where you went to school. Maybe not so much in this profession, but if you think about Harvard graduates, they usually have high salaries just because they went to Harvard. Again, I really have no idea haha but it makes sense in my mind that higher-ranking program graduates would be offered higher salaries, but the placement rate wouldn't necessarily be affected. Does that make sense? Either way, we're going to land jobs eventually!
  23. I haven't received notification from all of my schools either (1 actually). Since I applied through CSDCAS, it says on their site that some schools don't contact you until your application has been verified, which was about 2 weeks ago for me, so I'm going to email them today and just make sure. Some schools don't contact you until they've made a decision, but I would follow up anyway to be sure!
  24. Yeah they said the same thing to me, but they didn't hold up their end of the deal, even though it was their mistake. My application didn't get verified until 1/9 rolled around, rather than 12/30 when I orginally submitted. They're the worst haha.
  25. A similar thing happened to me - CSDCAS told me I needed to send a transcript, that I actually didn't need to send. When they received it, which was after my submission date (12/30), they emailed me saying my application was now in error and I needed to fix it. In summary, I had to delete the school from my undergraduate list, that way CSDCAS could delete the transcript from my application. My complete date, rather than being 12/30 (which it would have been if they didn't tell me I needed to send a transcript at the last minute), turned to 1/9/15. Thankfully, the schools I applied to required a "Complete Date" of 1/15/15, so I was in the clear. To get to your question, I just read CSDCAS policies and it does seem that your new completion date may affect your application being accepted by your schools. My advice is to call your schools ASAP and discuss this with them. I'm not saying for certain that your application is going to be thrown out by your schools, a lot of them are understanding of the CSDCAS process, but you need to call them and explain what happened. If when you submitted your application, all of your documents were in and processed by CSDCAS, that should make a difference. It looks like most of your schools had a "Complete Date Deadline" of 1/15/15, so if you submitted your application on 1/14/15 still missing documentation, then I would say they are not going to make an exception for you. All in all, I've had a terrible experience with CSDCAS and I sincerely feel for you! I really truly hope the schools you applied to are able to cut you some slack! Good luck!
