A lot of the Foreign Service Institute stuff is available for download now for free. Though of course, I can't find the link right now.
  2. Princeton has a Program in the Ancient World but I dunno if it's separate. In other news, my friend has been accepted to the following in Classics: Columbia, UPenn, Stanford, and U Chicago. He is an all-star though, not in his words but in mine. And I don't think he's posted any of his acceptances around here but I'll give a basic summary of his credentials: Salutatorian at an Ivy League for undergrad, full-ride to do a second BA in Classics at Oxford, took overloads all the time in grad school and numerous graduate courses at Ivy during undergrad. And no, it's not one of the schools he applied to for his PhD.
  3. Hahaha, I doubt there are any neighborhoods other than the Park Ave area that have quaint shops, green space, and townhouses. Those may be out of your price range though. Tallahassee is pretty dog-friendly, though not as much as some cities up north. The closest beach is between 1 and 1.5 hours away, depending on how fast you drive. Everyone's got their favorite nearby beach. Mine is closer to 2 hours away.
  4. This varies by school. I know my current institution pays part of our health insurance but we still pay over $800/year for our health insurance. I wouldn't assume that it's included, but I know it's more commonly included in the Midwest and at private institutions. Just saying because it isn't actually part of the comprehensive fees for grad students at my school.
  5. Fiddler_Crab, please check the "Tallahassee, FL" thread under the City Guide. I'm actually going to move your post there.
  6. The Excel thing is a fantastic idea. It's how I realized which MA program I should do.
  7. I'm going to move this to "The Bank" since it's about money. You may find help there in past postings...
  8. Didn't see anything there. My application is still active, I guess. I'm just waiting for UA to reject me, though not in anthro.
  9. Wait, universities pay for health insurance? I'm getting robbed! Also, think of all the reading/language study/sleep you could get in on the train. I'd do it.
  10. Does anyone else read these packages and think that you're in the wrong discipline?
  11. You could always call and ask if they're part of CGS.
  12. Yes, people do get accepted after being on the waitlist. Often people turn down their acceptances because it's not where they want to go so then the person on the waitlist gets an offer. It's definitely not the kiss of death.
  13. Gah, further assistance needed. I logged in but don't know where to look... It says my application is submitted but nothing else.
  14. I would ask after hearing about funding. I mean, I'd definitely ask before deciding to enroll if it's a sticking point for you.
  15. How did you check your status at Arizona?
  16. It may be possible. I know Princeton has agreements with UPenn to let undergrads take and audit Penn courses as needed. I know someone that studied Gikuyu with a professor at Penn two days a week from Princeton... so maybe it'll work for grad students too? Def something you should ask.
  17. Nina, I'm not actually in poli sci at all. I'm in geography and my main interests center around resources, conservation, and development.
  18. Congrats! This is fantastic news. You and hubby can be near each other and Philly is awesome!
  19. My field, if I were a historian, would be environmental history. Probably not water rights but water does fascinate me. I'm really into parks, tourism, and fire.
  20. I'm sure you meant April, Minnesotan.
  21. Well poo! I'd think that there might be some with funding left to apply to. Maybe in the upper Midwest? I'm thinking Montana, Idaho, North Dakota, maybe?
  22. What about the countless fields where there isn't a GRE subject test? In that case, the subject test couldn't be used as a cutoff or tiebreaker. I'm thinking of history, art history, geography, political science, classics, area studies, anthropology, sociology, etc. Though again, I'd imagine there are cutoff scores for the subject test, below which your application won't receive the same consideration. This thread has focused on the GRE general since it's more common.
  23. Quarex, maybe we'll see each other in Kansas? Peter, UW may not be the easiest to negotiate and I think 12.5K in Seattle is a bit low. The Davis offer sounds better financially. Where would you be happier and more productive?
  24. I think I want to be your grad student assistant on that book writing project. Sounds fascinating the civil war, authoritarianism, and Africa... right up my (geographic) alley!
  25. Has anyone identified some of these programs? I'm interested...
