  1. sure... it's nice... ish... just a little bit isolated. definitely some demographics they don't talk about ever. i guess it's nice if you've got the money to shop and eat downtown (j. crew, banana republic, ralph lauren, lahiere's, etc)
  2. What's with all the Princeton applications? Have you people ever BEEN to central Jersey?
  3. Anthropology MAs aren't that common to be earned as standalone degrees. So I think you should be fine with your applications there. Try not to worry too much about it now since your applications are already in.
  4. Yes, but your liver may not be that appreciative.
  5. You're just now checking the weather? I apply to schools based on weather. I hate lots of winter weather and snow so I ruled out Wisconsin, Syracuse, etc based solely on weather.
  6. Have you ever thought that the sampling frame may be way off? As in, people with high GRE/GPA scores are motivated to post those things along with their acceptances where as those with rejections or lesser scores are less likely to flaunt them in public? I don't have a perfect GPA or GRE scores and I changed disciplines between BA and MA. Nevertheless, I got into 4 of 6 MA programs when I applied. Personal statements, curriculum vitae, and letters of recommendation can totally make up for a bad grade or test score.
  7. So jealous! I really want to get into UT-Austin. Got rejected when I applied to do my MA there...
  8. I completely agree with the difficulties of establishing a level playing field. The GRE will never be objective, just like grades aren't. Not everyone can go to an Ivy League school (prohibitive factors include cost, availability of advanced courses in high school, SAT scores, being read to as a child by your parents), which completely affects your ability to get into graduate school. I feel like this entire conversation, which I haven't really weighed in on yet, is getting way out of hand. The question was about cutoff scores. The answer is that each department and discipline has its own cutoff scores. I mean, the graduate school minimums of 1000 or 1100 or whatever are just weedout scores. You may not like it but that's just the way it is. GPA cutoffs are somewhat arbitrary too, particularly since some schools grade tougher than others. All you can hope is that they know about how your school grades. My undergrad institution is notorious/infamous for having changed its grading policy and inducing others too follow... Mod note: Lay off the personal attacks or bans will start.
  9. I can't say I know anyone applying to school psych programs but I do know a school psychologist. It's a thankless though invaluable profession. Good luck!
  10. *fingers crossed for you* What department?
  11. Gosh, I hope it's next week but that just seems like wishful thinking. I'd love to have a concrete idea that I can stop looking for jobs on idealist.org and at universities in places I'd like to live (for the free classes) sometime soon. Though I did find some amazing jobs where I am that could totally maybe work out if I don't get any acceptances with funding...
  12. I've never heard of any though I suppose it *could* happen.
  13. I wouldn't worry about the LORs, you should be fine. And I'd do nothing about the prof that's leaving situation. Maybe he's leaving and he'll decide to take you with him, maybe there's others who could advise you at that school, etc. Good luck and try not to panic!
  14. then you clearly didn't grow up in Florida taking the Florida Writes! Test which was later incorporated into the FCAT. I skimmed about 2 pgs in the GRE book on the Writing section, decided I should just do 5 paragraphs the way they made us in 4th, 8th, and 10th grade, and went with that to get my 6.0. Kinda appalling really. But then I got an argument question I actually know a lot about because it was about education and I'm from a family of public school educators.
  15. I saw a post on the results page of someone getting into UGA and someone else for KU... anyone out there???
  16. What do you do? You find a new advisor/committee until you get the support you need.
  17. Wow! That's insane! I'm so glad I probably won't have to do any interviews at all. I can't imagine being out of town five weekends in a row. I think I'd lose my mind, slowly but surely between driving to the airport and being on a zillion airplanes. Good luck to you!
  18. There's nothing wrong with endless VH1 watching. But for the women's studies applicants, where all did you apply and what's your focus?
  19. That sucks! Isn't it cold in Canada? How are you not going to die?!? Ergo, your family not only didn't give you money but took your hat in an effort to lead to an untimely demise on your part. How cruel! They're worse than an adcom.
  20. I'm pretty sure it was all in good fun, Amanda. No need to worry, I'm certainly not. Then again, I also decided I'm not enough of a feminist to go into a dual women's studies program.
  21. Well, the FAFSA for graduate school is completely different. You're considered an independent so they no longer take into account your parent's income or assets. It's just you and what you have in the bank, which may make you eligible for federal subsidized loans.
  22. Stop re-reading your statement. There's nothing you can do about it now so why torture yourself by reading it over and over and playing the "what-if" game.
  23. What Minnesotan said. Usually funding decisions arrive separately from admissions. I know 3/4 of mine did last time.
  24. It really depends on the program. Some use those weekends to weed out candidates from their shortlist while at others its merely a formality. It's difficult to say for sure.
  25. Your research interests fascinate me. Actually, your entire profile fascinates me. I'm interested to see what shakes out for you though I'm not in English nor did I apply to any of those schools...
