  1. I'm not sure if anyone actually in a clinical program replied, but everyone is really focusing on research. In clinical programs you don't really worry about research alone. Fact is, you will have long days as well. I'm in an MS program and am looking to apply to the PhD program at my university. That said, in addition to research you also will end up looking at clinical work. My university separates the clinical work into 3 separate areas. You'll have an internal pracitcum at an on campus clinic, then an external practicum community placement, and finally your Doctoral Internship. Many people finish up their internship around the same time as their dissertation, some of them finish up their dissertation later. It depends, but this is a piece to remember. Though I'm not sure if you're looking at an entirely research-oriented program. Personally, my spring semester definitely led to some days where I wasn't home until 9ish. For my MS I've certainly had days where I didn't get home until rather late. My program doesn't require research (but is optional if students are interested and want the experience), but focuses on therapy practice. This semester I have a rather full schedule including my community internship, research, course work and my TA position. I assume I'll have many nights spent grading with wine...again.
  2. Just thought I'd check in. The semester has been pretty chill so far. I'm seeing clients in practicum. That's pretty exciting, actually. Hopefully I don't fuck up too massively there. Otherwise, actual classes are kind of slow and not too exciting. I'll be able to get a jump start on my thesis though, so that's fun! My adviser got a copy of nVivo to assist her with data analysis and I'll probably be able to use it with my thesis as well. That's fun. Okay. I gotta go do TA shinangians now.
  3. I'm 24 and in the second semester of my MS. My cohort is pretty mixed. I had a year off between undergrad and grad. A friend of mine went straight in after her undergrad, but some people are older with a couple of kids or some explored different careers first.
  4. Look at programs that have a counseling/therapy focus. An MFT would probably work or a Clinical Psych masters program. I'm in a masters program that allows the option for a certificate in child therapy. Something like that would probably work alright. Look up some things like this and see if they have programs that fit for you. I'm not sure what to tell you about your GRE/GPA issues though. Some schools just have different things they weight. It seems like you have a lot of practical experience though, which is fantastic.
  5. So uh, I thought I'd chime in with an update. I survived my first semester. Went through a rough patch of I dunno- impostor syndrome? My self-esteem took a dive. I thought I was doing terribly. My adviser helped me through it though. I'm really grateful to have a supportive program. By the end of the semester I felt okay though. I made it, anyways. The new semester is starting though. I'll be super busy with a number of commitments going on. I might explode. We'll see how it goes. I'm excited.
  6. I'm four weeks in...and I'm super sick. I have a raging cold. I have a couple things to work on too. I have a paper I need to finish up on (so glad I finally got started on it). Then I kind of want to work on another paper that's not necessarily due on Monday, but I would like to do it. Project topic proposal. And I have some TA stuff to finish up. Overall...not a ton but it feels kind of like a lot when I can't even breathe through my nose. Hopefully I feel better tomorrow and can get some writing in! My professors seem to like my enthusiasm for the topics I'm interested in. It's very encouraging. Overall the semester has been going well! A member of my cohort even brought me some beer she brewed at home!
  7. duolingo.com is a free language learning program!
  8. Hm. I'm going to look into this, myself. I was under the impression that people who had gone through my MS program had done work with the VA here. So, maybe after further investigation I can give some insight. My husband also works in the military mental health system so maybe I can annoy him about it.
  9. I've felt a bit off, myself. I think it could be a few things. Stress. I just moved in addition to starting a new program. Stress is known very well to impact the body in crazy ways. Suddenly being in crowded spaces with a bunch of other people. Who knows if a cold or something is getting around? Allergies. New city, new climate. My body might just be adjusting to new allergens. Plus, I think I've been consuming less water lately. I just did some yoga in my living room. It helped relive some tension I didn't realize was building up. Always good to take some time for yourself!
  10. I'm pretty fond of snacks like protein bars, bananas, grapes or fruit I can stick in a plastic container. Even yogurt or cottage cheese thingies if it's not hot out, and would be more for when I get there rather than after I've been there for a while. Or if you have a fridge to use.
  11. Just finished my first week. It's going well so far. My professors all seem like great people (they're all trained clinicians in psychology, in addition to their research). The profs definitely seem concerned about the mental state of their students- as in they are very concerned that all the students engage in self-care (to the point of one of them making us create a log for it). So, it seems to be a supportive program in that regard. I've got a lot to think about, for sure. I've got some big projects to work on. I'm making new friends within my cohort, so that's great. I got started on my TA-ship as well. I've been pretty productive with that already. One of the professors I am working with seems like a great fit for me, in terms of personality. Definitely good things to report so far. I guess I'll just have to see how things go as the semester continues.
  12. At least one of my courses is extremely writing-intensive. Another one is fairly writing-intensive. So yeah, our assignments an expectations have been laid out pretty well. Fortunately the professors seem like pretty awesome people. They've told us up front that they WILL mark up our papers. It's not to be mean, however. They just want to make us better writers. So, ya gotta just write and see where you land. Right now I'm just mulling over the possible topics I can attack for my lit review, since it will probably help as a launching pad for my master's thesis.
  13. I'm hanging out at the campus cafe right now, drinking some coffee. My classes start in a little while and I have my first work-meeting with a professor in a few minutes. I got here early to get good parking and finish up my FERPA training. Yay I'm so excited! Although I'm a little disappointed because my first class is actually an undergraduate prerequisite that I have to finish up...then later I get to attend an actual graduate level course.
  14. I'm not sure about getting a cat into the lower 48 but I just brought three from California, through Canada and back into Alaska. According to the website I checked I needed a health certification that was done within 30 days of arrival for Alaska and Canada needed a rabies certification. Neither borders checked for them. At least I had them, just in case. You can always call the border patrol and ask them what they would require.
  15. I just got to the new city after a very big move. Just realized that classes start in two weeks. AAAH. Kind of getting to the freak out point now.
