so many congratulations to those who got into pitt! also i feel like i might vomit because they were one of my top choices and i haven't heard anything! *faints* -
haha THIS. every time someone is like "oh, have you heard from schools yet?" i just blank out for a second because i cannot even process the question. it's like someone coming up to you and saying, "oh, has your house burned to the ground recently?"

The Trump Effect
tvethiopia replied to Dr. Old Bill's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
yes, though it may be unsuccessful, even though his violations are fairly obvious. to have legal standing to sue, the group is required to demonstrate that they've suffered concrete harm as a result of the conflicts, and that's pretty hard to establish. -
The Trump Effect

this is definitely kind of a nightmare happening in the US right now, but know that there are a lot of people fighting very hard against the insanity. the ACLU has made some significant strides already in getting courts to block the ban, at least temporarily. immigration lawyers are walking through airports taking names for class-action suits and offering free legal advice and assistance. we're getting hit with so much so fast it's hard to keep up, but a lot of americans are fighting back as hard as we can, and are totally ashamed of what our government is doing. fun fact: roger baldwin, a co-founder of the ACLU, originally taught the first Sociology course that washu had to offer. -
The Trump Effect

while some things--like changes to whitehouse.gov and some of the early executive orders--are typical of a transition period, there is really no reason to silence groups like NASA or the national park system. the media blackout being called for in organizations like this is certainly not just a matter of course, and is particularly extreme in its barring the use of social media as well as halting more formal press releases. -

if it's helpful, i've been maintaining a site that's tracking events following trump taking office. yesterday there were some especially worrisome executive orders that could have a very serious impact on anyone seeking to enter the US without citizenship: https://tvethiopia.github.io/after-trump/index.html -

THIS. while waiting to see which programs i get into--if i get into any at all--is stressful enough itself, the fact that i may have to plan a move without knowing where just escalates it 1000000%. while my apartment is month-to-month, my current job is a contract position and my contract is up june 30th, soooo.... come on schools. help a girl out. -

"That's the beautiful thing about a bear trap, you don't have to catch a whole herd of them. Just one nice big fat one." -Lauren Bacall, How to Marry a Millionaire -
the funniest thing about this is that i'm applying to composition and rhetoric programs so i'm like DON'T THEY KNOW THE RHETORICAL IMPLICATIONS OF THESE STYLE CHOICES?!

Fall 2017 Applicants
tvethiopia replied to Dr. Old Bill's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
i was just telling my husband the other day that this is going to be the first week that it would be totally reasonable and realistic to expect to hear something from the schools i've applied to. this is going to be a LONG week--and if i don't hear anything, i'm sure next week will be even longer. it's ok. we can do this. -

How Exactly Is Your Application Reviewed?
tvethiopia replied to Thersites's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
you never know! even if you didn't describe an especially narrow area of focus, this is one of the reasons you talk about POI; if the people you indicate have interest in your application, that can be enough for them to label/claim you. it really is impossible to predict what any particular committee will be looking for in any particular application cycle, so don't count yourself out yet! -

there's a university of georgia acceptance up! congratulations to whoever got it! -
yes! i just finished my masters in december and i've started playing around with writing fiction, which i haven't done in ages. it's so nice to work on something totally different, like stretching your legs after being in a cramped space.
