My wife and I are moving with our daughter (currently 3 months old) to a different state for school, but the moving costs won't be too bad. We will most likely be only living off of my stipend. It is quite a generous stipend so that makes things easier. My wife will probably stay home most of the day, but she plans on going back to school in the spring or fall of next year. We are hoping by then that our income will have decreased enough that she will get grants and possibly loans with subsidized interest at the point. Also, it will help that by then we will be residents so we will be paying the much lower in state tuition. We plan on taking advantage of the on campus day care facilities while we are both in classes. We are also selling our house and it looks like we will get quite a bit of money from that which will help pay the rent for a while. So, we don't really have any unusual steps planned to save money (we are both very frugal to begin with), but I am sure we will come up with more when the time comes.

I did my undergrad and got my Master's from Texas Tech, so I am quite familiar with the area. I also grew up in a nearby town, so let me know if you have any more questions. Lubbock is a pretty standard college town. I love Lubbock, but my wife hates it. Most of what college students do is go drinking. I am not saying that they are all alcoholics, but thats just what they choose to do. On main street near campus is where a lot of people like to go, mostly undergrads. There are more bars around town that are aimed at older people and grad students. Until this past year Lubbock was a dry town, meaning you could only by alcohol at bars inside city limits, but that was changed so now people can buy it at any of the grocery stores. I assume this will make the bars less crowded. There is also the depot district, which is where all the clubs are where people go dancing on the weekends. If you are not in to that scene there is still plenty to do. There are a couple of movie theaters in town, and one drive in theater which I really enjoyed going to. Lubbock also gets a few big concerts a year. There is also a Main Event which has bowling and laser tag and stuff. For weekend trips there are a few places nearby to go camping, hiking, and fishing. I never did any of that so I am not familiar with it but I know it is possible. For the question on where to live, it depends on if you are looking for an apartment or a house and if you want roomates or not. A general rule is to stay west of University and south of Erskine. A lot of undergrads live in the Lynwood Townhomes, which I really think is a good place to live, but it can get quite loud with the amount of people who live there. If you want something more quiet you will probably want to look further from campus. I had a house to live in so I didn't do a lot of looking. If you any more specific questions about this let me know, as I know quite a few people who still live there. The weather in Lubbock is hot and dry. It doesn't rain a lot, and it gets cold sometimes, but for most of the year it is hot and dry. And windy. You will probably get one day of snow a year which is nice. I know this was a bit of an information overload, so if you have any more specific questions post them here or send me a PM.

I get a little sad at first. Then I think well at least they haven't rejected me yet. I am actually quite proud that despite my relatively weak profile I have a possibility of being on the wait list for one of the top programs in the world. It also helps that I have two top choices, and I got in to one of them.

My wife and I are planning on renting a house when we first move down there if we decide on Arkansas. Does anyone have suggestions of areas that are good or areas to avoid? Also, are the management companies that rent out the houses good, or are there any that people have problems with?

I think maybe it is a combination of both. I know in Accounting a lot of the Professors have been gone to conferences up until this week, so they haven't had time to look at everything. I expect it to pick up any day now.

My plan B was to just keep my current job as it pays quite well and the benefits are great. Also, if I stayed here one more year I could probably actually get in to a slightly better program next year and have some extra funding. However, I can't wait another year and I don't think I will have to.

Normally I would say to politely decline due to the costs involved, but since you are already in that city the costs would be minimal. I would do it so you can see what another program is like. I went to visit a school lower on my list even though I was fairly certain I was in at a higher choice, but after visiting the school it is in serious contention for my decision.

It depends on the school and the program. Some schools bring in a large number of people, but a couple of schools I talked to only bring in the people they plan on making offers to. It is hard to say, but usually if you get an interview it is a good sign.

25 It seems like a good age to start to me. Since my program can be finished in four years at a few schools I applied to, I could possibly still be in my 20s when I get my first job as a Professor.

Yeah the suspense is getting to everyone. I wouldn't be too worried about it though you will probably start to hear some things over the next few weeks.

Has your friend considered explaining the situation to the professors involved and asking if they can read the letters. I know all of my professors would be cool with it, although I only needed 3.

I am fairly certain that they are treated as completely different schools. So, the level is prestige is separate from the main college. I may be wrong, but I think that is how it works.

I thought you might be the only person to apply Alexis, but I figured I would try anyway. I am not sure why we insist on not being identified since we are not really saying anything that hurts our cause, but it had been bothering me too so as you can see I removed the two schools from my post. I assume I will post them again once I get some acceptances and such as well. I am thrilled about my interviews, though I am pretty sure I heard so early due to a couple of professors being on top of things, I think I just got lucky. I really like your profile. I know we are trying for different programs but your profile is definitely stronger than mine. Percentile wise your quant test score is actually higher than mine. I don't know where all you applied, but I think you would definitely get some attention from some schools. Also in my personal statement I went in to almost no detail about me research interests outside of the general area. I think that is an advantage of business schools in that the focus can be discovered while in the program. Good luck and I am sure we will add more to this post in the future.

It doesn't affect my decision, but I definitely like to think about if there will be good sports games to watch depending on where I end up.

I just wanted to start a topic for the few of us who are attempting to get in to Business PhD programs. Since there is not too much action in the Business PhD forums you can discuss anything in here, but I thought I would focus on updating on schools we have heard from and maybe a brief profile to let people know. For me I am interested in a PhD in accounting and I applied to the schools listed in my signature. I finished my applications very early and have heard from two schools about interviews. My stats are as follows: BBA and MAcc degrees from a decent school. GPAs for both: 3.8 GMAT: 710 CPA 2 years of work experience at an accounting firm. I have no research experience. I got 3 really good LORs. I got a lot of help with my SOP so it should be pretty good. One other important factor is additional math classes which I do not have. However I have enrolled in Calculus 1 for the next semester and plan to take Calculus 2 in the summer. I have sent this information to all of the schools I am applying to and I think that has helped my cause. If there is anything else you want to know about my profile just ask. I will try to update this whenever I hear from other schools and you are welcome to do the same.

I may be different because I am interested in a Business PhD, but I would never go with Business Casual for an interview. I will definitely be wearing a suit to all of my interviews.

Depending on the size of the city you live in, you can have a property management company (not sure exactly what they are called) handle all of the rent stuff for you. I live in Houston and a lot of people do this. They collect the rent and do the repairs and stuff for you, the downside of course is that they get a portion of the money. This is just an option you can use if you are set on renting it out, perhaps until the market turns around and you can sell it. Personally though, I don't plan to use this option as I plan on simply trying to sell mine.

We are putting our house on the market as soon as I get an acceptance from somewhere. Hopefully these tax credits will encourage people to start buying houses in the next few months and that will help out the market.

I would say it won't hurt to let them know. I have decided to take some classes next semester so I e-mailed some schools. All they said they would do is put it in my file, so worst case its in your file and it gets ignored.

Ok I will bite. My predictions change everyday. Some days I feel like I am getting in nowhere and other days I feel like I will be accepted at most of my schools, but just to be part of the Prediction game I will throw this out: Applied: 7 Accepted: 3 (one of my top choices is in this group) Waitlisted: 2 Rejected: 2 (my other top choice is in this group) I just want to be accepted by 1. That will be enough for me.
