I had everything in Word already, but I switched to LaTex for my SOP because it allowed me to either (1) be within the page limit or (2) possibly decrease attention to the fact that I went slightly over the word limit for some schools.
-
I wrote my SOP in LaTex, but left my CV and Writing Sample in Word. I asked my letter writer if it mattered and he said something along the lines of "No one is going to base an admissions decision on whether you use LaTex or Word. They are more interested in your potential ability to do research."

I was wondering why someone would post fake results. My only conclusion is that they are stressed out and have become unhinged. If this is the case, I hope they get help. The results season has barely started and I am already sleeping very little. Consider me part of the "panic driven weeping" club.

We appear to have a massively lame troll this year. Harvard acceptance? I highly doubt that. The University of San Diego doesn't even have a PhD program according to their website.

"Though breakfast be good, dinner is better" "If you do not kill a man outright, he will live to be your enemy" Fortune cookies that give you chinese proverbs instead of fortunes are terrible.

I had one, but then got rid of it. The lack of privacy controls bothered me and I also just did not want an internet presence for the admissions committe. There is nothing on that website that wasn't on my CV. I got rid of my linkedin too.

Great. Just what I need more time to think of all of the stupid things I've said and written. And condolences to the person who was rejected from Melbourne. It is a pretty nice city.

lol. My options include things you have never heard of.

You mean checking my email and gradcafe is not fun? I actually like to bake and will be doing that tomorrow.

Professor Nooruddin last year: "Do we assign weights to the probabilities a given admit will come (i.e., do we have models of the yield?)? Of course, we do. But top departments believe they can compete and do." Just wondering, how can admissions committees tell if someone is likely to come or not?

I ended up taking RWBG's advice for calculating probability. Nothing exciting, really. Just common sense. The probability increases greatly from 5 to 10 schools, but little is gained from 20 to 25 (depending on your assumptions of X). The ideal number is around 15 (assuming X = .1 or .2). *I have decided to not post the chart. I do not want to lead someone on to thinking that if they apply to Y number of schools they will be accepted somewhere. There are lots of variables that I cannot account for like Professor Snodgrass being swamped with work already. Also, luckyducky does not want to be cited for years to come on gradcafe.
