  1. Anyone have experience with trying to get into CLV North? Do you know how long it takes or what the likelihood is of me getting a spot for September? I applied for August back in March, and instead of being put on a waitlist for September, I had to apply all over again. Alternatively, does anyone know of a good spot to search for housing on or near farmland on the outskirts of the University of Waterloo area?
  2. While I realize that this probably ranges widely from program to program (etc.), could anyone tell me when they heard whether or not they had a TA position and the schedule? I know I will be getting one, either now or in Winter. Without the rest of the details, it is sort of difficult to plan my schedule for the fall.
  3. I suppose I'll be devil's advocate. While I personally think it's important to have good relationships with advisors and professors, doing everything you are supposed to do isn't necessarily going to get you a job. And if you're applying for alt-ac positions or positions outside of your field entirely, it would make sense to have one letter from an English professor - but not a bunch. Surely any one of us could find ONE English professor willing to write a good letter of reference because they realize that the market is flooded with English majors (even PhDS!) and we have to diversify our academic/professional experiences.
  4. My major interest is feminism and race in sci fi.I can probably only present at one conference next year. Which is best - Wiscon, the Eaton conference, or ALA ,(for a panel on Octavia Butler? ) Mind, I realize I may only be accepted at one. But if I had to choose, which is best?
  5. Maybe this will sound strange. I don't know. My experience with uncertainty of employment for English degree holders is sufficient at this point to recognize the need for flexibility, so I'm considering pursuing 1) a Master's in Social Work or 2) a TESOL certificate during the course of earning my PhD. I'll probably take classes in the summer, online. I'm wondering if anyone else has considered this or has done it.
  6. I have to say that I am a bit disturbed by how casually the potential topics were presented. Other than that, I agree with danieleWrites. Your thesis should be of interest to you, and should contribute somehow or at least be relevant to your future goals.
  7. I'll start with three. What do we put on our business cards, profiles, etc before we reach candidacy? What are some good part-time and summer jobs for a Humanities student in a PhD program? Does having a lot of adjunct experience harm or help a tenure-track application? I am, unfortunately, leaning towards "harm," especially if that experience is post-PhD.
  8. Champagne: That's great! I feel like I remember you being around for as long as I have or longer (I was under a different username before this year). I have also been studying part time until now, though still taking courses, and I was also awarded a fellowship for the upcoming year.
  9. Just to clarify, the Ontario Trillium Graduate Scholarship IS an external award, correct?
  10. Hi all, Looking to "meet" current or incoming students at the University of Waterloo.
  11. Let's talk briefly about what types of positions we are seeing posted. Is there a trend? Lately I've mostly seen postings for early Americanists and European Romanticists. Of course, I've also seen a lot of postings for writing and rhetoric. What sorts of jobs might be prevalent when we have PhD in hand 4-5 years from now?
  12. And, as much as I'm infatuated with my program and location, I am worried about job prospects four-five years from now.
  13. I didn't either.
  14. I did none of these except take college classes; however, I was still a total nerd. Especially after all my friends either graduated or dropped out.
  15. I want to leave, and start my program, NOW. I have an M.A. thesis to finish and travel preparations to make, though..
  16. I will probably PM you. As well as anyone else who is interested. At this point I think my blog will mostly be about research and mentorship opportunities for high school and undergrad students, and also less well thought out versions of my academic obsessions.
  17. Does anyone know anything at all about the Ontario Trillium Graduate Scholarship for international students?
  18. Could we start a thread on the best conferences to attend and present at (in general), and then maybe break that down by field and location?
  19. I am feeling really good about my decision. I declined my other serious offers a few days ago, and have mostly gotten over the regret.I like that I know where I am going.
  20. I just accepted an offer for an English PhD at University of Waterloo. I'm very excited and would love to hear from people in the English department, if there are any, or in the Humanities/Social Sciences in general.
  21. Should I try to keep contact with a POI especially when she s at a university minutes away from the one where I was accepted and have decided to attend? If so how? I don't want to offend anyone or seem presumptuous.
  22. I am thinking of doing it because at this point in time, an English PhD is what interests me most greatly for my personal and professional goals. However, when I finish I may want to work at a learning center or in administration at some point. English and Education PhDs are very different, both in terms of the classes that are required and in the type of dissertation that is considered applicable.
  23. This might sound kind of crazy, but I am thinking that perhaps after I get a PhD in English I will get a PhD in Education or Higher Education. I have heard it is very rare for someone to be admitted to another PhD program after they have finished one, unless the field is very different.
  24. One university to which I was accepted required nine courses beyond the M.A. Two I am considering now require six and four, respectively. This seems to vary widely, and I don't know if I should be concerned.
