  1. Hi mindahoney, I spoke with a current student and she said while she likes having a car and wouldn't want to go without one, she thinks that is the case with most people - they just wouldn't want to go without one. Apparently a lot of students drive outside of Riverside for various events and activities.
  2. Having been in a similar situation, and having applied to a LOT of jobs, I would recommend waiting if you can. The job search often takes a long, long time, and you giving your resignation earlier won't speed it up much.
  3. Maybe here? http://academicjobs.wikia.com
  4. I am not sure this is really the place for this post, since most of us are applying or just starting off in grad school. However, my friend who is about to defend her dissertation says there is a wiki somewhere online for checking results and communications on higher ed jobs.
  5. Unfortunately, it isn't really about what makes me happy.. for a variety of reasons, I would love to move cross country - but it less feasible due to family, etc. Therefore, I am wondering if anyone could comment on the idea that Canadian universities would result in being less marketable. I ask this mostly because I have heard it from a couple of people studying in Canada, but my advisor (who, admittedly, is many years removed from the process) thinks it won't be a problem at all.
  6. I could start a separate thread for this, but I feel like maybe I'll get more responses here. Here's my dilemma; I can move across the country, or I can go to a Canadian university. I've heard that it's more difficult to get a tenure-track position in the U.S. with a Canadian PhD, and that it might be hard for an American to live in Canada long term. I don't mind staying in Canada, I'm not very patriotic, and I don't need to work for a high ranked or research university (as long as I can do some research). I am very excited about two of the Canadian universities to which I applied, for various reasons. With all of those factors up front, I'm hoping that some people here will be able to offer advice.
  7. I am starting to get anxious about the English PhD at Wilfrid Laurier.. anyone have news/thoughts?
  8. I suppose this is a long shot, but has anyone applied and heard? Someone posted not too long ago that they were waitlisted; meanwhile, I have received no rejection.
  9. Octavia Butler's work is not YA, except for, perhaps, Parable of the Sower. Xenogenesis is most definitely not YA.
  10. Well, that was fun. Tiring, but fun.
  11. Hi, Depending on where you are, I would say it's fairly unlikely that you will be able to find a research internship over the summer. These opportunities tend to be during the school year, and they are often reserved for current graduate students. Don't be discouraged, though! Contact people and ask. Also, there are certain summer opportunities such as the IHS Young Scholars Research Assistantship. Research assistants usually perform literature searches and help edit the work. I can't really speak to getting credit on a publication.. my understanding is that unless you go to a research institution that specifically prepares undergraduate students for undergraduate work, it's really rare for undergrads to get published. If you might want to work in a private school, consider Phillips Exeter. I was just taking a look at their school, and they seem great. There is an English teaching position open now, plus they offer summer work and internships. I'm also aware of Cranbrook and a few others. Good luck!
  12. Anyone know anything about the English PhD at Waterloo, Wilfried Laurier, or Dalhousie?
  13. I'm getting frustrated. I've emailed close to ten people over five days now about apartments, and have gotten no responses.
  14. So torn.. I don't want to ask my professors for YET ANOTHER LETTER, but I've been accepted to a school nearby with no funding and there's a fellowship I can apply for still.. it's my go-to if my dream school doesn't work out because it will be a huge move and I'm worried about how I'll afford to live there.
  15. Who else has been accepted, but is having "How can I make this work (financially)?" and "I'm not good enough" worries?
  16. Good to know! That said, is the Highlander trolley ok? Also, I would love to hear more about your experiences in the English department.
  17. Anyone know anything about Lake Elsinore and what trying to take public transportation to UCR (at least for the 1st year) would be like?
  18. I am pretty sure I will be living on campus. Anyone know some fun, affordable activities on or very near campus?
  19. I am wondering if I should go ahead and ask pressing funding/cost of living questions now, or wait until the visits. Any advice?
  20. arober6912, I will be attending the open house in March. I'm really looking forward to it.
  21. 2 and 2 here. 2 acceptances, 2 rejections- and I thought my application to University of Kansas was good. It was also such a great fit! Sigh.
  22. When you say "it's extremely difficult," do you mean any type of negotiation, or "wiggle room for relocation" specifically? I have been wondering about asking if there might be funds for relocation, but I'm feeling uncertain.
  23. I applied twice before being successful this round. A lot of this has been covered in previous discussions, but here's how I handled it. 1) Take the time in between to take classes, apply to and present at conferences, polish your writing samples, raise your GRE scores, or do anything else that will improve your application and fulfill that scholarly desire. 2) Apply to more schools, and if at all possible, make sure you are researching schools well and applying to the ones where your work will fit, not just those that are nearby or obvious for other reasons. 3) Apply to outside scholarships and fellowships, such as the Fulbright. This, like the first, helps in more than one way. It might help you to be a more competitive applicant, but it will also teach you how to manage multiple fronts and write in a more clear and concise manner. 4) Contact POI's. This is iffy, but if there is a good reason to do it .. like you have read your POI's work and want to know more or have a (reasonable) request, it might help. I was really nervous and uncertain, but it helped me to gain confidence and communicate my work.
  24. Anyone? I know there are some others over at the English forum, but I think it would great to get a conversation going here.
  25. I realize this is a city forum, but I'm not really sure where else to post this - can anyone comment on what it is like to raise a family on or near the Riverside campus?
