  1. Got into UCLA!! Community Health Sciences, Phd. Did anyone else applied to this program? Do you know how this program and department is? Any information will be appreciated!
  2. Hi guys, I have been accepted for PhD in Behavioral Sciences at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston SPH. I would like to get in touch with other people who have been accepted by this school. Are you guys thinking about accepting? What have you been informed about TA/RA-ships? Looking forward to meeting people interested in this school!
  3. Okay, thanks for letting me know! Good luck to you!
  4. Hi v_kalia, could you please tell me which program you applied to in University of Washington? I applied for Global health - implementation and haven't heard back anything yet!
  5. I haven't updated my status yet, but I received a rejection email yesterday in the evening I guess if you were rejected, they would have sent an email to you too! But they have not - So don't lose hopes yet. Good luck!
  6. Okay, that helps. Thank you
  7. Hi EpiGirl2016, can you please let me know - when did you interview with them? I haven't heard anything from this program yet! I didnt know they already accepted people
  8. It makes no sense that you work so hard all these years - gradeschool - highschool - college - graduate school (masters) - then Phd - and you end up with a 60-70k pay and have to constantly fight to keep your faculty position!! Faculties deserve more PAY!!!
  9. Yes, you are so right Everyone must have even already forgotten I did something stupid. Thanks so much for writing! It was very comforting I know!! I never realized panel talks could be difficult. I always thought it would be more comfortable than just being on your own. But yes, going last in a panel sucks! Just need to not think too much and just appreciate what others say without trying to make your speech as impressive as them - is the key. I almost pressurized myself to talk as eloquently as them. I should have just stuck to what I do knew and talking about it. Gotto watch those nerves the next time. Thanks your your reply Thanks for your reply St Andrews Lynx. After you said this, I am glad it happened in the classroom settings. Nothing major at stake. I think I just need to seek out more opportunities of talking "impromptu". Yeah you are right, they just probably felt bad for me. I would have felt bad too if I were in their shoes. Thanks for your response
  10. Just venting - yesterday I was completely put on the spot by one of my professors. I TA for his class. At the beginning of the class he asked me to talk to students briefly about some stuff. It wasn't related to coursework but about career options and graduate school and what not. I had to say yes. There were other four people who were invited to talk. They all knew about it in advance and were very prepared. So one by one, these four people talked about their career paths. Very interesting talks. They spoke so fluently and passionately about their careers. I was panicking because I knew I would not be so fluent. After around 30 minutes of staying in the front of the class, listening to people talk...It was my turn to talk! I opened my mouth to introduce myself -- and something gibberish came out. I didn't even know what I said! My heart was racing and next three to four sentences were completely nonsense! It was all jumbled up, grammatically incorrect and I actually saw undergraduate girls (who were not even listening to others' talks) look up aghast and laugh! I saw people laugh at me It was so humiliating. And then I carried on... And I finally said something that made sense. I talked a bit, not as much as the other speakers, but may be for next 5 minutes. In all that mess, I might have even said something politically incorrect -- it was a psychology career talk and I said "Public health schools have more money than Psych schools" Oh god.. I can't stop thinking about those 2-4 minutes of my life!! I literally couldn't get a coherent sentence out of my mouth! I am not a horrible public speaker... I have given talks, held mini-lectures. But I prepare a lot before speaking infront of the crowd. But this time, I completely failed myself and I am sure the professor is regretting his decision to ask me speak to his class Anyways, just letting it out. But this feeling is so bad.
  11. Hi TonyaB - Thanks a lot for your reply! That's some really good info. Wish you all the best for your PhD applications!
  12. Thanks rising_star. This makes me feel a little better. I am just waiting to hear back from schools and trying to keep my options open.
  13. Hi TonyaB, thank you for your reply! So the project manager - she/he has to have a PhD right? Is it possible to climb up the ladder (in research) if you don't have a PhD?
  14. Hi guys, Is there anyone here who has applied to University of Washington for Phd program? Would love to talk to people about this school. Thanks!
  15. Hi everyone, I have applied to some public health PhD programs, mostly in health behavior or related programs. My research has mostly been related to HIV care continuum. I am a Psychology masters student and will finish my masters in May 2016. I was wondering about the job market in public health field. I dont have any experience in this field. I was hoping someone could share their job-application experiences with me. Also, does anyone know what is the pay like for someone just starting their career in PH research? I will start looking for jobs in January or February. I am just making sure I have a Plan B if my Plan A (Phd student) fails this year.
  16. No. It is a degree and adds to your credentials. You can probably take doctorate level classes ( I am taking those while doing my masters). If you get into mentorship model masters program - it adds two more years of research experience. If you get to be a TA - it adds two more years of teaching/mentorship experience. If you are a good student - you could probably walk away with a departmental award or two... You get two more years to work on getting some publications out, conferences, making new contacts, getting new recommendation letters. So - definitely not a waste of time. About money - I got into a great masters program with some tuition waver. I earn TAship. So I am doing okay. You need to think about your finances.
  17. I would not go over the word limit ever. They may think I choose to ignore their requirements or worse - didn't read their website!
  18. Is it a good idea to mention faculty names on the SOP if the SOP prompt has not asked for it? If you write name - it shows you have done your homework but if you do - it almost limits your application. Any advice regarding this is appreciated. Thanks!
  19. It is a good draft. One general comment - some of your sentences seem little too casual for your graduate application essay. It may help if you make some sentences more formal. For example: May have/probably/possibly - it doesn't sound good when you are writing about yourself. You want to be more definite in your assessment of yourself.
  20. Thanks elsewhere123. I think I made up my mind and did some individual research after I posted my question. Public health it is The more I looked at PH programs, the more I became convinced that it is definitely for me.
  21. Hi all, One of my top-most preferred schools has written this under their minimum qualification for application - 1. GPA score 2. Relevant experience 3. Masters 4. GRE at least 155 or beyond on quantitative. I have 154 Does anybody know how they use the GRE score? I have a good GRE verbal score but my quant is just one below their required. Will I be totally excluded from consideration? Really freaking out here. Any information about how schools use GRE would help. Thanks!!
  22. Yup!! You look great on paper!! I think you are definitely going to get some serious consideration for admission. I think it will all come down to your statement and LORs. You have done everything you could Now just writer a killer statement and wait to hear back from schools. Good luck!
  23. I'm definitely not an expert, so take my comments with a grain of salt. Good luck!
  24. Thank you fuzzylogician! I was busy with my the beast - GRE! I think I'll talk to my advisor about it. My advisor is not the first author and knows that I've written the paper. But then, 4 others reviewed it and suggested modifications. So I guess you are right. I don't think I can send this paper as my sole work. I think I'll have to modify my other work that I submitted for a class and send that one in. Thanks for your insights! Its been really helpful.
