  1. Thanks fuzzylogician. That makes complete sense. Based on this, I have another question about picking content-ful chapter. I have written a paper that is currently under review for publication. I've written that entire paper and revised it but I'm the second author on it (for political reasons). The first author, in all likelihood, has never even read the entire paper. Would it be okay to submit it as my writing sample - just the discussion section of it after giving some background about the question and research methods? Appreciate any thoughts you might have on this. Thanks!
  2. Hi people, Is it okay to submit the introduction section of my thesis proposal as writing sample? Thank you!
  3. Its a good idea to have a thread for this. Tips that I received:o DON’T retell your CVo DO make it personal (i.e., it’s ok to have feelings)o But DON’T make it too personal (i.e., not too many feelings)o DO tell a story that includes: a. the start of your interest in the field b. your relevant research experience and where it’s lead you c. future goals d. specific interest in the program/faculty you’re applying to work witho DON’T talk about “wanting to help people” as your motivation for applyingo DO tailor your statement to each program/potential mentoro But DON’T reinvent the wheel each timeDON’T retell your CV
  4. SDSU/UCSD joint doctoral program has mindfulness meditation track.
  5. Thanks EdNeuroGrl!
  6. Hi everyone, I hate to be that person! But I can't help it this time. I am a Psychology student and currently doing my Masters in Psychology with emphasis on physical health research. I am applying to PhD in PH programs, particularly in behavioral health (for some school ) and epidemiology (for others schools). My profile is: 1. Undergrad GPA - 3.82 2. Current graduate GPA - 3.77 3. I will get a great ReCo from my advisor and a good ReCo from other two professors. 4. Have two papers under review; One in prep 5. Will have two conference presentations 6. Don't have GRE scores yet, but expecting a good verbal score and an average quant score. I have absolutely no idea about my chances at following schools: 1. Emory 2. U Washington 3. UC Irvine 4. NYU All my life, I have been a Psychology student and since my master's research has been in areas related to global public health and my advisor is strong supporter of PH programs for this kind of research, I have decided it is a right path for me. Any help will be appreciated! Is it a "decent profile" to have a shot at schools? If any of you is working at a school with cancer/HIV research, I would really appreciate if I could talk/mail you briefly. Thanks a lot in advance!
  7. Wow! Congrats. Its an amazing score! I wanted to ask you about this above mentioned sentence. What did you do to learn missed/wrong vocab questions?
  8. Thank you! I thought as much, but needed some kind of confirmation!
  9. Well, look at it this way - you studied hard and got the score. If you dont apply for coming Fall, you basically wasted all this time and money. This is because if you take a break for an year again, chances are that - you need to start the GRE prep all over again. So instead of not applying and therefore zero chances of getting it, apply and enjoy at least some chances of getting it. Who knows, the Adcom may really love your statement of purpose and your academic achievements so far. And you if get an interview, may be you can even impress them with your personality! May be studying for GRE twice earned you some good karma that would get in you! Good luck! Edit - Your verbal score is actually very good.
  10. Hi all, One of my potential PIs has written two sentences about her graduate students' acceptance. On one page, she has said she wont be accepting students for 2015-16 academic year. But somewhere else on the website, she has written that she will be accepting students for coming 2016-2017 year. I am a little confused. I will be applying for next Fall that is 2016. But I will be turning in my application by December, 2015. Which academic year is it if I am applying for Fall 2016 admission? Thank you!
  11. Hi everyone, My area of interest is HIV and Cancer. I am currently enrolled in a Psych master's program. My advisor (clinical psychologist) is really encouraging me to apply for doctorate program in Public health. I am a Psych student and I am finding it a little difficult to suddenly change my field after all these years. I have heard that Public Health is competitive but not as competitive (admission and subsequent job) as clinical psych. Is there anyone who has done this? I am clueless about the public health programs and any information would definitely help! Thank you!
  12. Hi Monisha, I was an international applicant too. I ended up applying to masters program first. I too had a masters degree from India. I am currently in a funded masters program and also have an assistantship that supports me. I think, being in a masters program worked out for me because trust me, Psychology in India and Psychology in US is expotentially different. Research, writing, exams, studying, lectures - everything is so completely different. (Although I dont know about Chennai.) I am glad I have the two years time (one more year to go) to figure everything out and get comfortable. Make sure that your future doctoral mentors would feel confident enough to invest in you. Coming from India, our transcripts, our research experience are way too different than the American students. My mentor had a lot of trouble figuring out my transcripts. Make sure you open one of the transcripts to check that everything looks good. Believe me, my first batch of transcripts had errors which needed correcting. It took me another couple of days, but I am glad I didn't send wrong trasncripts to school. Feel free to ping me if you need any help.
  13. Hey guys, Anybody here applied to SDSU-UCSD JDP? It is my top priority school and I will be applying here next fall. I would appreciate any information any of you can give me about this school (about interview/acceptance v rejection). Thank you!
  14. I think, it is best right now to not speculate as to what someone else might have done. You did what you did because you thought that was the best way to go. Right now if you are officially out of that program there is really nothing else to do. Its in the past. Quitting must have been a var hard decision and now playing all of the 'what-if' scenarios in your mind will just make it more difficult than it has to be. Thats just my two cents. I know its easier said than done. Unless it is just a vent-out post then, sure you need to talk and discuss about it just to get it out of your system.
  15. Ahh! I didn't know this. Sneaky!! Thanks for the explanation! Once in one of my classes, few representatives of a community college were promoting one of their programs. And one of their demographic questions asked - Are you a member of LGBT? That irked me and I didn't fill out their survey at all.
  16. Thanks ilovelab! I will think of a project that I can start and ask her if she can help me with it. I always thought that advisor's assign you to their existing projects (my classmates have been assigned). She is taking my help on one of her projects but I feel its not enough and doesnt give me a lot of desired experience.
  17. I don't understand. SES is important? Do they prefer or dont prefer people who low SES? Is there some kind of advantage?
  18. This is useful! Thanks
  19. Hi guys, I have a problem and I was wondering if any of you guys can offer any suggestions. So I got into my dream school for MA Research-oriented program. I have this most amazing and kind advisor. She is very new into the department - assistant prof. This is her second year here. I was really hoping to get a lot of research experience and its almost end of my semester and mostly I'm just helping her very little bit with some administrative work. It mostly involves writing some scripts for interviews and stuff. Not much anything else. Her work is more quantitative and so there are not any experiments where I can get some hands on experience. I always tell her -I'm ready to do more. I want to do more. She says- yes alright! Lets get started and then I just end up doing work which anybody else can do. What do I do? How do I tell her I want some good research experience. I feel totally hopeless when I see my classmates running experiments and writing some cool stuff. And I'm stuck! I really like my advisor but I feel as if I'm not getting what I came for. Am I supposed to start my own research project and then ask her for help? What should I do to get involved?? Any suggestions would help.
  20. YES! Definitely. It looks really good on your Statement of purpose if you can mention couple of profs you talked to at the school. Although it is not mandatory, I would say definitely do it. A lot of (research based) Psychology programs use mentor-based program so before the dept takes you in, a prof should be interested in working with you and taking you under their wings.
  21. Dont wait till weekend! They would totally understand if you are persistent in your efforts to contact them. Get in touch with other students if you know anybod who worked with them. Dont worry, you can explain your situation and tell them you are freaking out! They are humans too They will understand your concern. Good luck!
  22. Check San Diego State. They don't have direct 'Health Psychology' MS/MA but a lot of faculties active in Health Psych. Plus they offer stipend to every accepted student.
  23. Check out San Diego State. They do pay their masters students.
  24. Wow! Rabbit2013, I cannot thank you enough for this detailed reply! I am so glad I posted this question Thanks for all the points, especially letter of recommendation and reaching out to fellow students! I will probably save your answer for my future reference
  25. Hi, Would you guys please read and reply on my thread - Thanks!
