  1. Jaydee, What kind of language training do you have already?
  2. Accepted: UT-Austin, Illinois Waiting: Indiana, NYU, Georgetown, Harvard, Michigan. No funding for Austin, still waiting on FLAS status for Illinois.
  3. Who has heard from what? Did anyone get funding yet? Where else did you apply?
  4. I'm waiting on Georgetown. They said they made their decisions, and will let everyone know within the next couple of weeks.
  5. Hey, that's me. I checked the status a couple of days after I received my acceptance, and it still said its under review. I haven't checked it since. My email basically said, congratuations, you've been admitted, we'll send out a hard copy. I didn't get funding or a FLAS fellowship, so its highly unlikely that I will be attending. Best of luck.

Heard from the History Department that all decisions have been made. Will be notified in the next couple of weeks.
  7. UCLA has made all their admissions decisions. Here's to waiting.
  8. I recently received some good news, and wanted to pass that on to the Columbia History department. I emailed the DGS, and he sent me a brief reply thanking me for updating them. I imagine if a decision was made already for me, he would have let me know.
  9. I heard earlier that they had a large cohort last year, and couple that with this years budget, extended offers to about half as many as they usually do.
  10. Everyone just get rejections?
  11. Is stanford going to email, hard copy, or just let us know via website? According to past results, they let everyone know via email. Right about this time of the month too.
  12. To the UCLA admit: what is your field?
  13. UCLA, UCSB, Stanford, Columbia, Penn, Georgetown... All of em.
  14. Based on past years, it seems that Penn notified people just through their website. I wonder if they send out emails, or we'll just have to furiously check the website every minute next week.
  15. Ok. I'm Middle East and haven't heard anything yet, so I guess that's a relief. I wonder if the other person is East Asian also.
  16. What field are the people who heard from UCLA in?
  17. Ug. This is more than disappointing. At least we will hear from UCLA early.
  18. What was your graduate GPA? Its hard to determine what 'good, but not great' means. Why do you want to get some teaching experience? Its almost irrelevant to your application. More importantly, how much language training have you had in Japanese? If you have zero, stop worry about getting in. You won't. Start learning Japanese.
  19. What BCEmory said. You're scholarship is what matters, althought the quality of judgment one would have to actively work for Republicans might also hinder their ability to create greate scholarship. I kid, of course. What field are you applying for?
  20. Me: Modern Middle East History, applied to Columbia, Penn, UCSB, UCLA, Stanford, NYU, WUSTL and Georgetown. We'll see.
  21. Thanks. That one sample SOP up on Berkeley's site mentions an award. That would obviously be on a CV so I don't see what the problem is by mentioning a conference.
  22. I'm applying to Ph.d. history programs this Fall, and am trying to beef up my SOP. On my CV I have listed that I presented a paper at 5 conferences--one of which was a big national conference, the other is a big time special issue conference in London. I also published a book review. So, should I mention any of this on my SOP? Or should I just leave that stuff on my CV (which I am sending with my application)?
  23. Its a good program. Not stellar. They only provide FLAS scholarship to one incoming MA student a year, however.
  24. You wrote: "Second, one of my best research papers that I wrote as an undergrad was on Hamas- its history, structure, role in the current Palestinian-Israeli conflict, and the social services it provides to Palestinians." Do you read Arabic or Hebrew? If not, then I don't see how you could use primary sources in this type of paper. I do know that adcoms really want to see the use of primary sources in a Writing Sample.
